I Love the Bronx: Girls Gear Up

It was time for the ladies.
This past Oct. 12th, the NYPD Community Affairs Unit and Creativity Creates Productivity (CCP) held its 2nd Annual NYPD Girls’ Empowerment Day.
The event was held at Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club on Randall Avenue. More than 90 girls, ranging in age from 12 – 17, gathered for a full day of activities. Officers of the New York Police Department (NYPD) escorted the girls, from different neighborhoods throughout the borough, to and from the event. Over 35 female officers participated.
The day was designed to create a safe place for girls to discuss issues they face.
Among the free workshops offered were self-defense and Zumba. A climbing wall was used to help identify and confront specific fears. Girls cheered each other on, and when necessary, helped each other out.
Guest speakers covered topics such as domestic violence, teen dating, bullying and breast cancer awareness.
NYPD Lt. Lorraine Pérez and Tanya Hurtado, founder of the event planning group CCP, met years ago. They realized they both wanted to give back to young girls. They collaborated on the first event last year, and after a successful debut, they committed to making this year’s program even richer.
Hurtado worked to secure sponsors and contributors, such as her own CCP, the NYPD, the Kips Bay club, Papa John’s, Mamita’s Ice, DYulz Kreations, Making Strides, Sunshine in My Living Room and DJ Aileen.
During her remarks, Lt. Pérez noted that role models were everyday women in our own communities- not just bold-faced names.
Each girl left with copies of helpful, informative material, including the Teen Dating Bill of Rights, NYPD Bullying Tips, a List of Dating Violence Services for Teens in New York City, Social Media Safety for Teens, and pamphlets on exercise, nutrition and early detection for medical conditions.
And to make the day even more memorable, City Councilmember Vanessa Gibson made a surprise visit.
The event concluded with a dance party, and so it wasn’t long before every young girl, officer and volunteer participant made her way onto the floor. The girls were all smiles as Councilmember Gibson danced the Electric Slide with them.
It was great to see the girls dancing and laughing with the officers, and many recorded their moves on their phones. It was a memorable and wonderful sight to witness how the young women interacted positively and directly with the officers present, and vice versa.

Era el momento de las chicas.
El pasado 12 de octubre, la Unidad de Asuntos Comunitarios del NYPD y Creatividad Crea Productividad (CCP por sus siglas en inglés) celebró su segundo día anual del NYPD de empoderamiento de las niñas.
El evento se realizó en Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club de la avenida Randall. Más de 90 niñas, de edades entre 12 y 17 años, se reunieron para un día lleno de actividades. Oficiales del Departamento de Policía de Nueva York (NYPD por sus siglas en inglés) escoltaron a las niñas, de diferentes barrios de la ciudad, desde y hacia el evento. Participaron más de 35 mujeres policías.
El día fue diseñado para crear un lugar seguro para que las niñas discutieran los temas que enfrentan.
Entre los talleres gratuitos ofrecidos hubo autodefensa y zumba. Un muro de escalada se utilizó para ayudar a identificar y enfrentar los miedos específicos. Las chicas se animaron unas a otras y cuando fue necesario, se ayudaron mutuamente.
Las oradoras invitadas cubrieron temas como violencia doméstica, las citas en la adolescencia, la intimidación y la conciencia sobre el cáncer de mama.
Lorraine Pérez, teniente del NYPD, y Tanya Hurtado, fundadora del grupo de planificación de eventos CCP, se conocieron hace años. Se dieron cuenta de que ambas querían retribuir a las niñas. Colaboraron en su primer evento el año pasado y después de un exitoso debut, se comprometieron a hacer del programa de este año aún más rico.
Hurtado trabajó para asegurar patrocinadores y colaboradores, como su propio CCP, el NYPD, el club Kips Bay, Papa John’s, Mamita’s Ice, DYulz Kreations, Making Strides, Sunshine in Mi Living Room y DJ Aileen.
Durante su intervención, la teniente Pérez señaló que los modelos a seguir son las mujeres de todos los días en nuestra propia comunidad, no sólo nombres en negritas.
Cada niña se fue con ejemplares de material útil e informativo, incluyendo la carta de derechos en el noviazgo, consejos del NYPD contra la intimidación, una lista de los servicios para la violencia en las citas de adolescentes en la ciudad de Nueva York, seguridad para los adolescentes en las redes sociales y folletos sobre ejercicio, nutrición y detección temprana de afecciones médicas.
Y para hacer el día aún más memorable, la concejala Vanessa Gibson hizo una visita sorpresa.
El evento concluyó con una fiesta de baile, así que no pasó mucho tiempo antes de cada joven, oficial y voluntaria participante se abriera paso hacia la pista. Las chicas eran todas sonrisas mientras la concejala Gibson bailaba el Electric Slide con ellas.
Fue genial ver a las chicas bailando y riendo con las oficiales, y muchas grabaron sus movimientos en sus teléfonos. Fue un espectáculo inolvidable y maravilloso ser testigo de cómo las mujeres jóvenes interactuaron positivamente y directamente con las oficiales presentes, y viceversa.
Un agradecimiento muy especial a la teniente Lorraine Pérez y Tanya Hurtado por su visión, tiempo y dedicación a las jóvenes del Bronx.
