I Love the Bronx: G.Y.M.

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.

“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent. A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.

Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.

“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.

” Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive!”

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of meeting Joseph L. Ziegler at the Bronx River Alliance’s Winter Assembly. He was asked to share his story about “The Jungle,” a park with a basketball court located within Soundview Park at Rosedale and Lacombe Avenues.

Ziegler was born and raised in the Soundview section of the Bronx.

During the dark days of the crack era, the Jungle for Zeigler and his friends was a safe community space, especially the basketball court. The park wasn’t properly maintained but Zeigler, then a teenager, and his friends, pulled their resources and maintained the park.

The basketball court, as he described it, changed the course of his life as it provided him an education. He always returns to the Jungle in the spring and summer to play ball or to connect with friends.

As time passed, the neighborhood improved, but a new set of challenges arose, including obesity.

Ziegler wanted to repair the park for local kids to have a safe place to play a sport and stay fit, as he did. With this vision, he reached out to friends and family and raised funds to host a Jungle Park clean-up. He purchased paint, garbage bags and even equipment to replace the worn out equipment on the basketball court.

One thing Zeigler did not realize is the need for a permit to host an event in a city park.

On the day of his event, a park employee happened to pass by the playground. He noticed the work being done and began to question Ziegler. Moved by the genuine concern Zeigler had for the local youth, he contacted the park manager, and Ziegler and his group were able to complete their project with the help of the Department of Parks.

Two months ago, while at a session of Partnership for Parks’ Fellowship Academy, I had the opportunity to sit down and speak with Ziegler one-on-one. He shared that this desire to help youth led him to form an organization: the G.Y.M. Project (Getting Youth Motivated).

This Bronx based not-for-profit seeks “to improve and revitalize neighborhood parks, green spaces and school gymnasiums in underprivileged communities.”

The organization “provides a solution to the growing concerns of childhood obesity by offering programs designed to increase physical activity in the park and implementing tools to educate youth to make healthy food choices through its programs.”

This past Sun., Apr. 14th, I participated in the G.Y.M. Project’s Spring Clean-Up at the Jungle.

Dozens of volunteers gathered and small groups were designated to sections of the park. Many large bags of trash were collected just from the one site we were assigned to. It felt awesome to be part of the solution making process and help get things done.

Their next event, “Get Fit,” will be held on Sat., May 11. All participants are asked to meet at the corner of Rosedale and Lacombe Avenues and jog a section of the Bronx River Greenway within Soundview Park.

“Soy una nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres hermosos bebés Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dice Martell, de ascendencia puertorriqueña.

Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx.

Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.

“Quiero que mis compañeros residentes estén conscientes y estén informados de hermoso es nuestro vecindario, lo que ofrece y cómo prestar ayuda a nuestro medio ambiente”.

De esta nueva etapa en su vida, Martell dice: “¡Nunca me he sentido tan viva!”

A principios de este año tuve el placer de conocer a Joseph L. Ziegler en la asamblea de invierno de la Alianza del río Bronx. Se le invitó a compartir su historia sobre “The Jungle”, un parque con una cancha de baloncesto situada en el parque Soundview, en las avenidas Rosedale y Lacombe.

Ziegler nació y se crió en la sección Soundview del Bronx.

Durante los días oscuros de la era del crack, la Jungla de Zeigler y sus amigos era un espacio seguro de la comunidad, especialmente la cancha de baloncesto. El parque no tenía el mantenimiento necesario, pero Zeigler -entonces un adolescente- y sus amigos, consiguieron los recursos y daban mantenimiento al parque.

La cancha de baloncesto, como él la describió, cambió el curso de su vida, ya que le proporcionó una educación. Él siempre vuelve a la Jungla en primavera y verano para jugar pelota o para conectarse con amigos.

Con el paso del tiempo el barrio ha mejorado, pero una nueva serie de desafíos se presentan, incluyendo la obesidad. Ziegler quiso reparar el parque para que los niños de la zona tengan un lugar seguro para jugar, practicar deportes y mantenerse en forma, como él lo hizo. Con esta visión, se acercó a amigos y familiares y recaudó fondos para organizar una limpieza del parque “Jungle”. Compró pintura, bolsas de basura y hasta equipo para reemplazar el que estaba desgastado en la cancha de baloncesto. Una cosa que Zeigler desconocía era la necesidad de un permiso para organizar un evento en un parque de la ciudad.

El día del evento, un empleado del parque casualmente pasó por la zona de juego. Se dio cuenta de la labor que realizaban y comenzó a cuestionar a Ziegler. Conmovido por la verdadera preocupación que Zeigler tiene por la juventud local, contactó al administrador del parque y Ziegler y su equipo fueron capaces de completar el proyecto con la ayuda del Departamento de Parques.

Hace dos meses, durante una reunión de la Partnership for Academy Fellowship Parks, tuve la oportunidad de sentarme con Ziegler y tener una conversación frente a frente. Me compartió que este deseo de ayudar a los jóvenes lo llevó a formar una organización: el proyecto GYM (GYM en español: motivando a la juventud).

Esta organización sin fines de lucro de Queens busca “mejorar y revitalizar los parques vecinales, los espacios verdes y los gimnasios escolares en las comunidades de escasos recursos”.

La organización “ofrece una solución a las preocupaciones crecientes de obesidad infantil, ofreciendo programas diseñados para aumentar la actividad física en el parque e implementando herramientas para educar a los jóvenes para elegir alimentos más saludables a través de sus programas”.

Este pasado domingo 14 de abril, participé en el proyecto GYM de limpieza de primavera en “the Jungle”. Decenas de voluntarios se reunieron y pequeños grupos fueron designados a las secciones del parque. Muchas grandes bolsas de basura se recogieron sólo del sitio al que nos asignaron. Fue increíble ser parte de la solución y ayudar a resolver las cosas.

Su próximo evento, “Ponerse en forma”, se celebrará el sábado 11 de mayo. Se solicita a todos los participantes que se reúnan en la esquina de las avenidas Rosedale y Lacombe para trotar en una sección del Bronx River Greenway en el parque Soundview
