I Love the Bronx: From on high

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”
Recently, I was out of town, and in traveling in and out of the city, I was afforded the opportunity to see our borough in a completely different way.
And I was able to document it, by taking some aerial pictures of the Bronx.
I must admit, while I have loved the Bronx since I was born, this allowed me to fall in love all over again.
One of the things I love most about the Bronx is the fact that we are 24% parkland.
Most of us can’t comprehend that, since we all see is the concrete jungle around us.
But if we take a step back, or go high, all that green land is far more apparent.
In departing, my flight took off and we traveled north from LaGuardia Airport.
As we approached the Hunts Point area, I quickly took my camera out hoping to capture a glimpse of our borough.
At a window seat, next to the wing, you could feel pretty much everything.
And though I am normally terrified of flying, the distraction – and the scenery – quickly canceled my fears.
No discomfort ever set in.
My mind was too caught up with the stunning views below.
Even the initial popping of my ears went unnoticed.
As we took flight, I was facing the east Bronx: buildings, complexes, houses and huge pockets of green spaces.
The first view was over the Soundview section of the Bronx – including the area where Donald Trump is developing the Trump Golf Links by Ferry Point Park.
Just a moment later, the scene shifted to the vast grounds of the New York Botanical Garden, a portion of the Bronx Zoo (both part of Bronx Park) and Pelham Parkway all the way to Orchard Beach.
The trip was short, but for the first time, I could not wait to be back on board for the returning flight, just for another opportunity to catch the magnificent views.
The two friends I traveled with must have been sick and tired of hearing me say, “I can’t wait to be over the Bronx again.”
But I really couldn’t.
On the return flight, I choose a seat with the view of the west Bronx.
As we flew over New Jersey and I noticed the Hudson, I quickly secured my camera to capture new perspectives. Amid newly constructed structures, some older historic buildings were quite visible – such as the Kingsbridge Armory, Loew’s Paradise Theater, the Emigrant building on the Concourse and the Veteran’s Hospital.
One wonderful flight attendant even allowed me to run from my window seat to the one across from me just to capture different views.
As we traveled further south, I ran to the opposite side and caught a glimpse of Crotona Park, Indian Lake and even the tennis courts.
At one point, I had to put the camera down just to be in the moment and enjoy the breathtaking sights.
I hope one day the Bronx will offer helicopter tours so we can all have the opportunity to view the Bronx aerially.

Yo amo el Bronx: Desde arriba

“Soy nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres preciosos niños del Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dijo Martell, de descendencia puertorriqueña.
Paralegal por más de 17 años hasta diciembre del 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx.
Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.
“Quiero hacer a mis compañeros residentes concientes e informados de cuan hermoso es nuestro condado, lo que ofrece y como ofrecer una mano amiga a nuestro ambiente”.
De este nuevo tiempo en su vida, Martell dice, “nunca me he sentido más viva”.
Recientemente, estuve fuera de la ciudad, y durante los viajes de ida y vuelta, tuve la oportunidad de ver nuestro condado de una manera totalmente diferente.
Fui capaz de tomar algunas fotos aéreas del Bronx.
Debo admitir, mientras que he amado el Bronx desde que nací, esto me permitió enamorarme nuevamente.
Una de las cosas que más amo del Bronx es el hecho de que el 24 por ciento del condado es áreas verdes. Muchas personas no pueden comprender eso ya que todo lo que vemos es una jungla de cemento a nuestro alrededor.
Pero si damos un paso hacia atrás, o vamos alto, toda esa tierra verde es mucho más evidente.
Saliendo, mi vuelo despegó y viajó al norte desde el Aeropuerto La Guardia.
Mientras nos acercábamos al área de Hunts Point, rápidamente tomé mi cámara esperando capturar un pedazo de nuestro condado. Tengo terror de volar, pero la distracción – y el escenario – rápidamente canceló mis miedos.
En un asiento junto a la ventana, al lado del ala, puedes sentir casi todo.
Pero las nauseas no empezaron; mi mente fue capturada con las increíbles vistas.
Incluso el reventón inicial de mis oídos pasó desapercibido.
Mientras tomábamos vuelo, estaba al frente del este del Bronx: edificios, complejos, casas y enormes pedazos de espacios verdes.
La primera vista fue sobre la sección de Soundview del Bronx – incluyendo el área donde Donald Trump está desarrollando ‘Trump Golf Links’ por el Parque Ferry Point. Justo un momento después, la escena cambio a las vastas tierras del Jardín Botánico de Nueva York, una porción del Zoológico del Bronx (ambas partes del Parque del Bronx) y el Pelham Parkway todo hasta la Playa Orchard.
El viaje fue corto, pero por primera vez, no podía esperar por el vuelo de regreso, solo para tener otra oportunidad de ver la magnifica vista.
Con los dos amigos que viajé deben de haber estado cansados de escuchar “No puedo esperar volver a estar sobre el Bronx”.
Pero de veras no podía esperar.
Al regreso, elegí un asiento con la vista al lado oeste del Bronx.
Mientras volábamos sobre New Jersey y vi el Hudson, rápidamente aseguré mi cámara para capturar nuevas perspectivas. Entre recién construidas estructuras, algunos viejos históricos edificios estaban bastante visibles – como el Kingsbridge Armory, el Teatro Loew’s Paradise, el edificio Emigrant en el Concourse y el Hospital de Veteranos.
Una maravillosa asistente de vuelo hasta me permitió cambiarme de asiento para el de al lado solo para capturar diferentes vistas.
Mientras viajábamos más al sur, corrí al lado opuesto y tomé una vista del Parque Crotona, Indian Lake y hasta las canchas de tenis.
En un momento, tuve que dejar la cámara a un lado para estar en el momento y disfrutar las impresionantes vistas.
Espero que un día el Bronx ofrezca excursiones en helicóptero para que todos tengamos la oportunidad de ver el Bronx desde el aire.
Hasta ese día, disfruten estas fotos, y si un día se encuentra en el cielo, de un mirada a su alrededor.
En efecto, el Bronx es precioso.
