I Love the Bronx – Felicidades

“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.

A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.

Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.

“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”

Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”

This year I’m looking forward to quite a few developments to come in our borough.

After 40 years of being closed, and plenty of delays for its official reopening, the High Bridge will finally open this year. Completed in 1848, it is the oldest standing bridge in New York, and it links the Bronx, at West 170th Street and University Avenue to Manhattan, at Highbridge Park. The 1450-foot bridge spans over the Harlem River. There will be different events to celebrate the re-opening including historical walks, bike rides and on water activities. Know that we will share word on the festivities as the information becomes available.

The Trump Golf Links is scheduled to open this Spring. The Jack Nicklaus Signature Design, 18-hole course sits at the foot of the Whitestone Bridge at Ferry Point Park. The views are amazing. Though it is owned by the New York City Department of Parks, the new course will be operated by Donald Trump for 20 years.

The Umbrella Hotel is also scheduled to open this year. The boutique hotel will be located at 681 Elton Avenue between East 153rd and 154th Streets in the Melrose area. After many years of work, the 7-story building will offer 56 rooms. It is part of the growing number of lodging options in the Bronx.

And come May 16th, the New York Botanical Garden will display its major exhibition, “Frida Kahlo: Art, Garden and Life”. The Conservatory will be reimagined in the like of Frida’s home garden and studio “Casa Azul” in Mexico. It is the first solo exhibit of the artist’s work in our city in nearly a quarter of a century.

You don’t want to miss it.

There are also annual events I love to attend.

The Bronx Coalition of Parks and Open Spaces will host its 21st “Bronx Parks Speak Up” conference on February 28th at 11 a.m. Located in the Music Building of Lehman College, the event provides workshops, panel discussions and networking opportunities. Momma’s Hip Hop Kitchen will also host “Vol. 8, Enough is Enough!” on March 7th at the Hostos Center for Arts and Culture. The event provides a platform for different social issues and their impact on women, while also promoting and celebrating the presence and contributions of women in the hip hop culture. This year, we saw the birth of a trend that will endure: Bronx Fashion Week. In 2015, the same set of events will be held on March 14th at the Bronx Museum of The Arts. For more information, please visit www.bronxmuseum.org.

Como parte de nuestra serie regular de BFP que destaca los espacios favoritos, las cosas y las personas de nuestro condado, nos dirigimos con Nilka Martell, quien continúa explorando su pueblo natal.

“Soy una nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres hermosos bebés del Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dice Martell, de ascendencia puertorriqueña.

Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx. Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.

“Quiero que mis compañeros residentes sean conscientes y estén informados de qué tan hermoso es nuestro condado, lo que ofrece y cómo ayudar a nuestro medio ambiente”.

De esta nueva etapa de su vida, Martell dice: “Nunca me había sentido tan viva”.

Este año ansío varios acontecimientos que tendrán lugar en nuestro condado.

Después de 40 años de estar cerrado, y de muchos retrasos para su reapertura oficial, el High Bridge finalmente abrirá este año. Terminado en 1848, es el puente más antiguo de Nueva York, y vincula al Bronx, en la calle 170 oeste y la avenida University, con Manhattan, en Highbridge Park. Es la primera exposición individual de la obra de la artista en nuestra ciudad en casi un cuarto de siglo. No quiere perdérselo.

También habrá eventos anuales a los que asisto con amor.

La Coalición de Parques y Espacios Abiertos del Bronx celebrará su 21a conferencia “Bronx Parks Speak Up” el 28 de febrero a las 11 am.
