I Love the Bronx: El Sancochazo

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”
Stone Soup is a folklore tale and at its heart lies the importance of cooperation.
As the story goes, three travelers, carrying only a cooking pot, enter a village. The villagers, who have already endured famine, floods and other hardships, quickly make their way home and lock the doors. They are unwilling to feed the travelers, as they hardly have enough for themselves.
The travelers, ever resourceful, fill the pot with water and gather twigs for a fire. They select a stone and place it in the boiling water.
One by one, the villagers, driven by curiosity, come out and ask questions. They are told more about the stone soup. They each then contribute different ingredients: salt and pepper, spices, onions, carrots, mushrooms, corn, garlic, beans, yams and much more. Individually, they had little, but collectively, they find they had enough to feed the town.
The evening ends in song and story-sharing.
Within many of our Latin and Caribbean cultures there is a similar communal meal, sancocho.
An enormous variety of ingredients is used to create the fragrant stew, including beef, chicken, pork chops and sausage together with corn, yams, pumpkin, taro root, cassava, plantains and plenty of rich seasonings.
The stew is often served with white rice and/or avocado.
In the spirit of Stone Soup and this shared traditional dish, the Green Workers Cooperative is planning “El Gran Sancochazo del Bronx”/“The Big Bronx Sancochazo”.
Free and open to the public, the event intends to build community, and to spend time sharing food, skills, talents, music, dance and much more.
The pot-luck style encourages that all participants bring a dish to share or an ingredient for the sancocho. And even if you can’t bring a dish, you’re encouraged to share skills and talents.
The event will be held on Sat., Sept 28th, and is hosted by Friends of Brook Park.
The Sancochazo will be held at 141st Street and Brook Avenue from 12 p.m. – 6 p.m., and the rain date is October 5th.
There have been many versions of Stone Soup the years. Despite the change in details and characters, the lesson remains the same: a touch of generosity and collaboration go a long way. While we may believe we have little to share, collectively, we have plenty.
It was only three years ago that I got involved in my community.
Prior to that, I was consumed with my own life’s responsibilities and the fast pace of urban life.
Today I can attest to the power of community and cooperation.
For three years, neighbors have volunteered their time to maintain a block beautification project in our immediate neighborhood. Together, we keep our streets clean and care for our trees. It can’t be done alone; it takes the work and spirit of us all.
The Sancochazo will provide an opportunity to meet fellow Bronxites and get information on different initiatives, programs and upcoming events – and to enjoy a wonderful meal with fellow villagers.

“Soy nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres preciosos niños del Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dijo Martell, de descendencia puertorriqueña.
Paralegal por más de 17 años hasta diciembre del 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx.
Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.
“Quiero hacer a mis compañeros residentes concientes e informados de cuan hermoso es nuestro condado, lo que ofrece y como ofrecer una mano amiga a nuestro ambiente”.
De este nuevo tiempo en su vida, Martell dice, “nunca me he sentido más viva”.
Stone Soup es un cuento de folklore y su fuerza reside en la importancia de la cooperación.
Según cuenta la historia, tres viajeros, llevando sólo una olla, entran en una aldea. Los habitantes del pueblo, que ya han padecido hambre, inundaciones y otras dificultades, rápidamente hacen su camino a casa y cierran las puertas. No están dispuestos a alimentar a los viajeros, ya que apenas tienen lo suficiente para sí mismos.
Los viajeros, siempre ingeniosos, llenan la olla con agua y recolectan ramitas para el fuego. Seleccionan una piedra y la colocan en el agua hirviendo.
Uno por uno, los habitantes del pueblo, impulsados por la curiosidad, salen y hacen preguntas. Se les dice más acerca de la sopa de piedra. Cada uno de ellos aporta diferentes ingredientes: sal y pimienta, especias, cebolla, zanahoria, champiñones, maíz, ajo, frijoles, camote y mucho más. Individualmente tenían poco, pero en conjunto descubren que tienen suficiente para alimentar a la población.
La noche termina en canciones e historias compartidas.
En muchas de nuestras culturas latinas y caribeñas existen platillos comunales similares, sancocho.
Una enorme variedad de ingredientes se utilizan para crear el guiso aromático, incluyendo carne de res, pollo, chuletas de cerdo y salchichas con maíz, batatas, calabaza, malanga, yuca, plátano y un montón de ricos condimentos.
El guiso a menudo se sirve con arroz blanco y / o aguacate.
En el espíritu de Stone Soup y este plato tradicional compartido, los trabajadores de la Cooperativa Verde están planeando “El Gran Sancochazo del Bronx” / “The Big Bronx Sancochazo”.
Gratis y abierto al público, el evento tiene la intención de construir una comunidad y pasar el tiempo compartiendo alimentos, habilidades, talentos, música, danza y mucho más.
Se solicita a todos los participantes que traigan un plato para compartir o un ingrediente para el sancocho. E incluso si no se puede llevar un plato, usted puede compartir habilidades y talentos.
El evento se llevará a cabo el sábado 28 de septiembre, y es organizado por Amigos de Brook Park.
El Sancochazo se celebrará en la calle 141 y avenida Brook desde 12 p.m. hasta las 6 p.m., la fecha alternativa en caso de lluvia es el 5 de octubre.
Ha habido muchas versiones de Stone Soup. A pesar del cambio en los detalles y personajes, la lección es la misma: un toque de generosidad y colaboración recorren un largo camino. Si bien podemos creer que tenemos algo para compartir, de manera colectiva, tenemos mucho.
Fue hace sólo tres años que comencé a participar en mi comunidad.
Antes de eso, me consumían las responsabilidades de mi propia vida y el ritmo acelerado de la vida urbana. Hoy puedo atestiguar el poder de la comunidad y la cooperación.
Durante tres años, los vecinos han ofrecido su tiempo para mantener un proyecto de embellecimiento de manzana en nuestro vecindario inmediato. Juntos mantenemos nuestras calles limpias y cuidamos nuestros árboles. No podemos hacerlo solos, se requiere la obra y el espíritu de todos nosotros.
El Sancochazo será una oportunidad para conocer a otros residentes del Bronx y obtener información sobre las diferentes iniciativas, programas y próximos eventos, además de disfrutar de una maravillosa comida con otros vecinos.
