I Love the Bronx: Ego v. Soul

“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.

A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.

Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.

“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”

Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”

Rex Hall, the 4,000-square-foot, century-old ballroom, will soon see a rebirth.

Earlier this year, the Belmont Society of Arts and Culture leased the Hall, intending to use it as a platform to showcase up-and-coming artists. It includes a stage, making it a multi-functioning space that can feature art, theater, film or dance.

Bronx resident sculptor Jeanine Alfieri became the group’s first artist-in-residence this summer. She has since been preparing for her solo exhibition “Ego versus Soul”.

We had an opportunity to visit the artist at work this past week.

Located at 602 East 187th Street in Little Italy, Rex Hall has the charm of age, with a tin ceiling, crown moldings and chandeliers.

Another artist was busy at work transforming the space while Alfieri focused on laying out her own work.
Excited about the possibilities, she spoke about how Rex Hall could host collaborative exhibits, which would bring artists together in support of each other’s work. As she explained it, she seeks to create a haven for art in a space that has been closed for decades, and make art accessible to all.

Alfieri also shared details on some of the pieces in her upcoming show, which vary from mixed media, sculptures and paintings. She explained that they are based on her observations of human behavior and inner conflicts and thoughts.

One of her paintings, for example, highlighted the face of an older man with facial drooping and the word “EGO” incorporated within the image.
Alfieri’s show is scheduled to run from October 1^st through October 29^th, on Wednesdays through Fridays from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m.

The opening reception will be held on October 4^th at 7 p.m. and includes an Alfieri-inspired performance piece by Autum Kioti and a musical performance by the Monticelli Trio. Food will be provided by Whoopies Miniature Dessert Company.

Alfieri will also offer two talk sessions open to the public; the first is scheduled for October 15^th and the second will be held on October 22^nd. Both will begin at 6:30 p.m.

“Soy una nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres hermosos bebés del Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dice Martell, de ascendencia puertorriqueña.

Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx. Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.

“Quiero que mis compañeros residentes sean conscientes y estén informados de qué tan hermoso es nuestro condado, lo que ofrece y cómo ayudar a nuestro medio ambiente”.

De esta nueva etapa de su vida, Martell dice: “Nunca me había sentido tan viva”.

Rex Hall, el salón de baile de 4,000 pies cuadrados y un siglo de antigüedad, pronto verá un renacimiento.

A principios de este año, la Sociedad Belmont de Arte y Cultura arrendó el salón con la intención de utilizarlo como una plataforma para artistas prometedores. Incluye un escenario, lo que lo hace un espacio multifuncional que puede presentar arte, teatro, cine o danza.

La escultora residente del Bronx, Jeanine Alfieri, se convirtió en la primera artista residente del grupo este verano. Desde entonces, ha estado preparando su exposición individual “Ego frente al Alma”.

Tuvimos la oportunidad de visitar a la artista la semana pasada, mientras trabajaba.

Situado en el 602 de la calle 187 este, en la Pequeña Italia, Rex Hall tiene el encanto de la edad, con un techo de hojalata, molduras y candelabros.

Otro artista estaba ocupado transformando el espacio mientras Alfieri se concentraba en trazar su propia obra.
Entusiasmada con las posibilidades, habló acerca de cómo Rex Hall podría albergar exposiciones colaborativas, lo que uniría a los artistas para apoyar el trabajo de los demás. Según explicó, busca crear un refugio para el arte en un espacio que ha estado cerrado durante décadas, y hacer el arte accesible para todos.

Alfieri compartió detalles sobre algunas de las piezas de su próxima exposición, que varía entre técnicas mixtas, esculturas y pinturas. Explicó que están basadas en sus observaciones de la conducta humana, los conflictos internos y los pensamientos.

Una de sus pinturas, por ejemplo, destaca la cara de un hombre mayor con parálisis facial y la palabra “EGO” incorporada dentro de la imagen.

La exposición de Alfieri estará disponible del 1 al 29 de octubre, de miércoles a viernes, de 3 p.m. a 8 p.m., y los sábados y domingos desde el mediodía hasta las 6 p.m.

La recepción de apertura se llevará a cabo el 4 de octubre a las 7 p.m. e incluirá una actuación inspirada en Alfieri por Autum Kioti, y una actuación musical del trío Monticelli. La comida estará a cargo de Whoopies Miniature Dessert Company.

Alfieri también ofrecerá dos sesiones de charlas abiertas al público; la primera está programada para el 15 de octubre y la segunda se llevará a cabo el 22. Ambas comenzarán a las 6:30 p.m.
