I Love the Bronx: City of Water Day

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive!”
This week, she writes of how Bronxites can celebrate the City of Water Day their own way.
July 14, 2012 is Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance’s City of Water Day.
It is the largest harbor-wide event that in the New York/New Jersey area.
And all Bronx residents can come out this year and celebrate!
The Bronx River Alliance is offering a full river tour.
Starting at 8:30 a.m., the tour will begin at ShoelacePark, 219th Street and conclude at SoundviewPark. The ride is about 4 hours long. In this area the BronxRiver flows through the BronxForest, the Botanical Garden, the Bronx Zoo, RiverPark, West Farms Rapids, StarlightPark, ConcretePlantPark, Hunts Point Riverside and SoundviewPark.
There are also three waterfalls in this section, located in the Botanical Garden, the Bronx Zoo and RiverPark. That means you must pull your canoe out of the river, carry it and replace it after the fall!
From 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., you can celebrate our waterways at the Soundview Park Festival.
The Bronx River Alliance will be offering free community paddling. If the full river tour seems too much, here’s your opportunity to experience our waterways! In addition there will other family-friendly activities and educational activities. They will also provide a free bike loan (helmet is also provided).
And don’t worry if you or your young one don’t know how to ride a bike, they have the most phenomenal team to help you out, and kids are almost instinctive learners.
The benefits of bike riding are numerous and the bike lanes within the park are scenic routes along the BronxRiver and East River.
SoundviewPark is located along the BronxRiver, where the river opens into the East River. You can gain access on Lafayette Avenue and Bronx River Ave. The over 200 acres of land has been renovated throughout the years.
The park has playgrounds with sprinklers, baseball, basketball, soccer, football and cricket fields, handball courts, bike and greenway lanes and an amazing waterfront view of the East River. You can picnic, sunbathe, read a book or just enjoy the natural setting.
When I was younger the area was undeveloped.
The waterfront still lured people, especially many Puerto Ricans and other Latinos. Fishing, small boats, music and barbeques were just some of the normal weekend activities many years ago.
It’s great to see how the park has been designed to meet the needs of our growing communities.
Whatever the reason behind your decision, come out and discover the Bronx and celebrate our waterways. Let’s build community bonds by utilizing and exploring our rivers.
Ask questions, look into programs for your children, your family, yourself and make this summer a time to be the change you want to see in the Bronx.

Como parte de nuestra serie de BFP destacando los diferentes espacios, cosas y personas favoritas de muchos de nuestros lectores, nos dirigimos a Nilka Martell, quien continúa explorando su ciudad natal.
“Soy nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres preciosos niños del Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dijo Martell, de descendencia puertorriqueña.
Paralegal por más de 17 años hasta diciembre del 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx.
Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.
“Quiero hacer a mis compañeros residentes concientes e informados de cuan hermoso es nuestro condado, lo que ofrece y como ofrecer una mano amiga a nuestro ambiente”.
De este nuevo tiempo en su vida, Martell dice, “nunca me he sentido más viva”.
Esta semana, nos escribe acerca de cómo los residentes del Bronx pueden celebrar el Día del Agua de la ciudad de manera personal.
El 14 de julio de 2012 es el Día del Agua de la Alianza Metropolitana de Riveras de la ciudad.
Es el evento de puertos más grande en el área de Nueva York/New Jersey.
Y todos los residentes del Bronx pueden venir este año y celebrar.
La Alianza del Río Bronx está ofreciendo una excursión completa del río.
Comenzando a las 8:30 a.m., la excursión comenzará en el Parque Shoelace, Calle 219 y terminará en el Parque Soundview. La vuelta es como de cuatro horas. En esta área, el Río Bronx fluye a través del Bronx Forest, el Jardín Botánico, el Zoológico, Parque River, West Farms Rapids, el Parque Starlight, el Parque Concrete Plant, Hunts Point Riverside y el Parque Soundview.
También hay tres cascadas en esa sección, localizadas en el Jardín Botánico, el Zoológico y el Parque River. Eso significa que usted debe de sacar su canoa del río, cargarla y colocarla luego de la cascada.
De 10 a.m. a 6 p.m., usted puede celebrar nuestras vías fluviales en el Festival del Parque Soundview. La Alianza del Río Bronx le ofrecerá a la comunidad remar gratuitamente. Si la excursión del río completo parece demasiado, aquí está su oportunidad de experimentar nuestras vías fluviales. Además habrá otras actividades familiares y educativas. También habrá bicicletas gratis (también se provee el casco).
Y no se preocupe si usted o su joven no saben correr bicicleta, tienen el equipo más fenomenal para ayudarlo, y los niños casi aprenden por instinto.
Los beneficios de correr bicicleta son numerosos y los carriles de bicicletas dentro del parque son rutas escénicas a lo largo del Río Bronx y el Río East.
El Parque Soundview está localizado a lo largo del Río Bronx, donde el río se abre hacia el Río East. Puede ganar acceso en la Avenida Lafayette y la Avenida Bronx River. Los más de 200 acres de tierra han sido renovadas a través de los años.
El parque tiene jardines de juegos con rociadoras, pelota, balónpie, futbol y campos de ‘cricket’, canchas de ‘handball’, bicicleta y carriles verdes y una increíble vista de la rivera del Río East. Usted puede hacer picnic, tomar el sol, leer un libro o solo disfrutar la naturaleza.
Cuando yo era joven el área no estaba desarrollada.
La rivera todavía atrae a las personas, especialmente muchos puertorriqueños y otros latinos. Pesca, pequeños botes, música y barbacoas son algunas de las actividades normales de fines de semana por muchos años. Es bueno ver como el parque ha sido diseñado para reunir las necesidades de nuestras comunidades. Cualquiera que sea la razón detrás de su decisión, salga y descubra el Bronx, celebre nuestras riberas. Vamos a construir lazos comunales utilizando y explorando nuestros ríos.
Haga preguntas, mire los programas para sus niños, su familia, para usted y haga de este verano un tiempo para hacer el cambio que usted desea ver en el Bronx.
