I Love the Bronx: Borough in a Bucket

It is such an exciting time to be here.

Though I was born and raised in the borough, I have come to discover how little I knew about the Bronx.

In 2011, as I embarked on this journey of discovery, I created a bucket list of places to see and things to do.

It has been amazing.

In this year alone, I have been able to canoe along five miles of the Bronx River.  The Bronx River Alliance kicks off canoe season with its annual Flotilla, during which hundreds make their way from Shoe Lace Park at 219th Street, all the way to Hunts Point Riverside Park on Lafayette Avenue.

I was one of those upon the river, and I can tell you, if you have not yet canoed the Bronx River, you have not fully experienced the Bronx.

Another item I was able to check off my list this year was spending time at the old Bronx Borough Courthouse on 161st Street between Third and Brook Avenues. It had been closed to the public since 1977, but now the nonprofit arts organization No Longer Empty is providing free community programming there every weekend through July 19^th.

Make your way there and explore it for yourself.

I was also recently a guest at the Bronx Ball, an annual event which is part of Bronx Week, a 10-day series of events highlighting the best of our county. The elegant Ball is held outdoors, under a large white tent at Orchard Beach and celebrates inductees of the Bronx Walk of Fame. It was an amazing evening, one I look forward to enjoying again next year.

I always dreamed of having one of my Bronx photos be part of an exhibition. Some months ago, I entered a photo contest through the Friends of Pelham Bay Park, and I was thrilled to have won first place. The photo will be at display at the City Island Nautical Museum beginning July, and the exhibition will then travel to other venues throughout our borough.

There are slightly more idiosyncratic items too.

Weird as it may sound, I had written down “eating at Chipotle in the Bronx,” as I truly enjoy the restaurant’s food.

Well, the popular chain opened its first location by the Third Avenue Plaza earlier this year, and I will no longer have to catch a train for the eatery’s delicious food.

And there is more to come.

I am very excited that soon, the High Bridge is finally reopening, and despite years of delays, this vital link between the Bronx and Manhattan will again be accessible to the public.

And later this summer, I will be able to cross out yet another item as the highly anticipated Randall’s Island connector is set to be complete. This link will connect the South Bronx, over the Bronx Kill, directly to Randall’s Island. It is part of the South Bronx Greenway, and the bike and pedestrian lanes led to 400 acres of open space.

It is quite an honor to witness these amazing occurrences in our borough, and my ultimate goal is for you also to be excited. Create your own list and start living those experiences.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve been here your entire life, or a few years, there is always something to do to discover and enjoy the wonder of the Bronx.

Es un momento tan emocionante para estar aquí.

Aunque yo nací y crecí en el condado, he llegado a descubrir lo poco que sabía sobre el Bronx. En 2011, cuando me embarqué en este viaje de descubrimiento, creé una lista de lugares por visitar y cosas que hacer.

Ha sido increíble.

Este año pude hacer canotaje a lo largo de cinco millas en el río Bronx. La Alianza del Río Bronx inicia la temporada en canoa con su flotilla anual, durante la cual cientos hacen su camino de Shoe Lace Park, en la calle 219, hasta Hunts Point Riverside Park, en la avenida Lafayette.

Otro punto que pude tachar mi lista de este año fue pasar tiempo en el viejo palacio de justicia del condado del Bronx en la calle 161, entre las avenidas Tercera y Brook. Estuvo cerrado al público desde 1977, pero ahora la organización sin fines de lucro artes No Longer Empty brinda programación comunitaria gratuita cada fin de semana hasta el 19 de julio.

También fui recientemente invitada al Bronx Ball, un evento anual que forma parte de la Semana del Bronx, una serie de 10 días de eventos que destacan lo mejor de nuestro condado. El elegante baile se llevó a cabo al aire libre, bajo una gran carpa blanca en Orchard Beach y celebró a los postulados del Paseo de la Fama del Bronx. Fue una noche increíble, una que espero poder disfrutar de nuevo el próximo año.

Siempre soñé con que una de mis fotos formara parte de una exposición en el Bronx. Hace algunos meses entré en un concurso de fotografía a través de los Amigos de Pelham Bay Park, y me emocionó haber ganado el primer lugar. La foto estará en exhibición en el Museo Náutico de City Island a partir de julio y la exposición viajará a otros lugares a través de nuestro condado.

Hay elementos ligeramente más idiosincrásicos también.

Extraño como pueda parecer, escribí “comer en Chipotle en el Bronx”, ya que realmente disfruto de la comida del restaurante.

Bueno, la popular cadena abrió su primer local en la Plaza de la Tercera avenida a principios de este año, y ya no tendré que tomar un tren para probar la deliciosa comida del restaurante.

Y hay más por venir.

Estoy muy emocionada de que pronto, High Bridge finalmente reabrirá, y a pesar de años de retrasos, este vínculo vital entre el Bronx y Manhattan volverá a ser accesible al público.

Y a finales de este verano podré tachar otro punto, ya que el muy esperado conector de la isla Randall está listo para ser completado. Esto conectará el sur del Bronx, sobre Bronx Kill, directamente a la isla Randall. Es parte del South Bronx Greenway y los carriles para bicicletas y peatones tienen 400 acres de espacio abierto.

Es un gran honor presenciar estos hechos sorprendentes en nuestro condado y mi objetivo final es que ustedes también estén emocionados. Creen su propia lista y comiencen a vivir esas experiencias.

No importa si usted ha estado aquí toda su vida, o un par de años, siempre hay algo que hacer para descubrir y disfrutar de las maravillas del Bronx.
