I Love the Bronx: At Home with Andrew

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”
It’s time to come Home.
The Andrew Freedman Home has become a destination for all things community and art in the borough.
During the summer the Home held various community events, including BombaYo’s annual Bombarbeque, and music and art during the Sundays of Boogie on the Boulevard.
A few weeks ago, the Home was host to the first-ever Bronx Fashion Week, an idea brought to life by Flora Montes. The three-day event featured runway shows that represented the best and finest of the borough, including eyewear from Metro Optics.
On Sat., Sept. 6th, the Bronx-based organization Prom King held “The Bronx Suits Up” event, which was co-sponsored by O Magazine. The event provided high-end clothing items at reduced prices for men of all ages. Prom King founder Evelyn Álvarez emphasized the need for affordable dress clothes and shoes in order to help men make a solid impression as they seek out academic and career opportunities.
My own 16-year-old son, who wears a 13.5 shoe size, was excited to find a pair of Rockport shoes for only $20.
Then, on Sat., Sept. 13th, The Bronx Artist Documentary Project held the opening reception to its latest photo exhibit at the Home. The Project features 30 photographs and 80 Bronx-based artists. The event, which runs through October 8th, is free.
During the reception, I spoke to a resident who was born and raised just a few blocks from the Home. Though he had walked by the property plenty of times, he had no idea it was open to the public or that it held so many art events. Some weeks ago, he observed graffiti artists creating artwork. He introduced himself, and began a conversation. He was soon invited to create his own artwork on a sliver of wall space.
And there is more.
On Thurs., Sept. 18th, the Home will feature Celeste Bedford Walker’s play Black Wall Street. It will run through October 4, and tickets can be purchased via eventbrite.com.
If you aren’t familiar with the Home, it is the only mansion on the Grand Concourse, located between McClellan and 166th Streets. The structure looks like something out of a history book. The four-story palazzo-style building was opened in 1924 as a retirement home for the formerly wealthy. In 1982, the Mid-Bronx Senior Citizens Council purchased the building, and in 1992, it received landmark designation from the city.
In addition to the events hosted in the venue, the Home also offers a bed and breakfast, and houses an artist residency and early education center.

“Soy una nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres hermosos bebés del Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dice Martell, de ascendencia puertorriqueña.
Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx. Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.
“Quiero que mis compañeros residentes sean conscientes y estén informados de qué tan hermoso es nuestro condado, lo que ofrece y cómo ayudar a nuestro medio ambiente”.
De esta nueva etapa de su vida, Martell dice: “Nunca me había sentido tan viva”.
Es hora de volver a casa.
La Casa Andrew Freedman se ha convertido en un lugar para visitar para cosas diversas de la comunidad y el arte en el condado.
Durante el verano, la Casa fue sede de diversos eventos de la comunidad, incluyendo la Bombarbeque anual de BombaYo, y otros eventos de música y arte durante los domingos de Boogie en el Boulevard.
Hace unas semanas, la Casa fue sede de la primera Semana de la Moda del Bronx, una idea hecha realidad por Flora Montes. El evento de tres días contó con pasarelas que representaron lo mejor y más fino del condado, incluyendo gafas de Metro Optics.
El sábado 6 de septiembre, la organización Prom King -con sede en el Bronx- celebró el evento “The Bronx Suits Up”, copatrocinado por O Magazine. El evento proporcionó prendas lujosas de vestir para hombres de todas las edades a precios reducidos. La fundadora de Prom King, Evelyn Álvarez, hizo hincapié en la necesidad de tener ropa de vestir y zapatos asequibles con el fin de ayudar a los hombres a lograr una impresión sólida mientras buscan oportunidades académicas y profesionales.
Mi propio hijo de 16 años de edad, cuya talla de zapato es 13.5, estaba emocionado de encontrar un par de zapatos Rockport por sólo $20 dólares.
Luego, el sábado 13 de septiembre, el Proyecto Documental de Artistas del Bronx celebró una recepción de inauguración de su más reciente exposición de fotos en la Casa. El proyecto presenta 30 fotografías y a 80 artistas de Bronx. La exhibición, disponible hasta el 8 de octubre, es gratuita.
Durante la recepción, hablé con un residente que nació y se crió a pocas cuadras de la Casa. A pesar de que había caminado por la propiedad muchas veces, no tenía idea de que estaba abierta al público o que poseía tantos eventos artísticos. Hace algunas semanas, observó a grafiteros creando obras artísticas. Se presentó y comenzó una conversación. Pronto fue invitado a crear su propia obra de arte en una franja de espacio de la pared.
Y hay más.
El jueves 18 de septiembre, la Casa presentará la obra de Celeste Bedford Walker, Black Wall Street. Estará presentándose hasta el 4 de octubre y las entradas se pueden comprar a través de eventbrite.com.
Si usted no está familiarizado con la Casa, la única mansión sobre Grand Concourse, está situada entre calles McClellan y la 166. La estructura parece salida de un libro de historia. El edificio de estilo palacio de cuatro pisos se inauguró en 1924 como una casa de retiro para los ex ricos. En 1982, el Consejo de la Tercera Edad del Mid-Bronx compró el edificio, y en 1992 recibió la designación monumento de la ciudad.
Además de los eventos organizados en el lugar, la Casa también ofrece alojamiento y desayuno, y alberga una residencia artística y un centro de educación temprana.
