I Love the Bronx: Aqua Hung

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”
The Bronx River Art Center unveiled a new public art installation this past Sat., Nov. 15th. As part of the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Community Commissions program, the Aqua Hung sculpture will be displayed at West Farms Square Plaza at East Tremont and Boston Road for the next eleven months.
Scores of people gathered to support Bronx-based artist Xavier Figueroa, who explained his work was inspired by the fish passage ladder being constructed in nearby River Park. The ladder is intended to provide passage for alewife herring to travel upstream to spawn.
Figueroa worked together with students of the Bronx River Art Center’s after school program at Emolior Academy, located across the street from the Plaza. During their work together, the students learned about the restoration of the Bronx River and the return of wildlife to the waterway. As the river has become cleaner, indigenous animals have responded by coming back. Beyond the alewife herring, there have also been beavers and egrets.
The Aqua Hung sculpture incorporated both the research and artwork of the students, who chose images of the animals within the replica of the river.
Figueroa also remarked that reflective tape used on the sculpture’s pipes mimicked the river’s waterfall. This tape will reflect in the evening as cars pass.
Moreover, the back side of the installation makes QR codes available. Most smart phones carry a QR reader, or will allow you to download one. This phone application will scan the code and direct you to a website with additional information regarding the specific wildlife in the Bronx River. The interactive facet is an essential tool in the ongoing outreach on the importance of the river.
One Bronxite, who was waiting for the bus, was curious about the gathering. I spoke with her about what was taking place, and upon learning of the project, she expressed how delighted she was to see public art by local students on display. She added that she hoped that engaging and educating the youths would lead them to share the information with other students and that they would change behaviors that pollute our waterways.
The event also included a piece by dancer and choreographer Davalois Fearon. Everything Water was six-minute dance solo consisting of movements to recreate the qualities of water.

“Soy una nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres hermosos bebés del Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dice Martell, de ascendencia puertorriqueña.
Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx. Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.
“Quiero que mis compañeros residentes estén conscientes e informados de qué tan hermoso es nuestro condado, lo que ofrece y cómo ayudar a nuestro medio ambiente”.
De esta nueva etapa de su vida, Martell dice: “Nunca me había sentido tan viva”.
El Centro de Arte del Río Bronx dio a conocer una nueva instalación de arte pública el pasado sábado 15 de noviembre. Como parte del programa Comisiones Comunitarias del Departamento de Transporte (DOT por sus siglas en inglés) la escultura Aqua Hung estará en exhibición en la Plaza West Farms Square en East Tremont y Boston Road durante los próximos once meses.
Decenas de personas se reunieron para apoyar al artista residente del, Bronx Xavier Figueroa, quien explicó que su obra se inspiró en la escalera para el paso de peces que se está construyendo en el cercano River Park. La escalera pretende brindar el paso a los arenques de sábalo que viajan río arriba para desovar.
Figueroa trabajó junto con estudiantes del programa para después de clases del Centro de Arte del Río Bronx de la Academia Emolior, ubicada enfrente de la Plaza. Durante su trabajo en conjunto, los estudiantes aprendieron acerca de la restauración del río Bronx y sobre el regreso de la vida silvestre a la vía acuática. A medida que el río se ha limpiado, los animales nativos han respondido regresando. Más allá de los arenques de sábalo, también ha habido castores y garcetas.
La escultura Aqua Hung incorpora tanto la investigación como las obras de arte de los estudiantes, quienes eligieron imágenes de animales dentro de la réplica del río.
Figueroa también comentó que la cinta reflejante utilizada en las tuberías de la escultura imita las cascada del río. Esta cinta se reflejará en la noche con el paso de los coches.
Por otra parte, el lado posterior de la instalación hace que haya disponibles códigos QR. La mayoría de los teléfonos inteligentes llevan un lector de QR, o le permitirán descargar uno. Esta aplicación escaneará el código y le dirigirá a una página web con información adicional con respecto a la fauna específica del río Bronx. La faceta interactiva es una herramienta esencial en la divulgación permanente sobre la importancia del río.
Una residente del Bronx, quien esperaba el autobús, tenía curiosidad acerca de la reunión. Hablé con ella sobre lo que estaba ocurriendo y al enterarse del proyecto, expresó lo encantada que estaba de ver que el arte público de los estudiantes locales estuviera en exhibición. Añadió que espera que la participación y la educación de los jóvenes les lleve a compartir la información con otros estudiantes y a cambiar las conductas que contaminan nuestros canales.
El evento también incluyó una pieza de la bailarina y coreógrafa Davalois Fearon. Everything Water fue un baile en solo de seis minutos consistente en movimientos para recrear las cualidades del agua.
