I Love the Bronx: A new member takes office

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.

“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.

A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.

Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.

“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”

Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”

This week, she shares details of the swearing-in ceremony of one of the new elected representatives of the borough.

 

On Sat., Jan. 12th, Luis Sepulveda was sworn in as the new Assemblymember for the 87th District.
Hundreds of people, from all different walks of life, races, cultures and beliefs, filled the St. Raymond’s Auditorium where the ceremony was held.

U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer rode his bike from Brooklyn to join in the festivities and show his support.

Other officials in attendance included U.S. Representative Jose Serrano; New York State Senators Rev. Ruben Diaz, Jose Serrano, and Jeffrey Klein; New York State Assemblymembers Carl Heastie, Marcos Crespo, Vanessa Gibson and Mark Gjonaj of the 80th Assembly District (the first Albanian American sworn into New York State Legislature); New York City Comptroller John C. Liu; New York City Councilmembers Joel Rivera and Annabel Palma; Democratic District Leader Kenny Agosto and Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr., among many.

There were also performances by the New York City Housing Authority Choir and Margia Shiriti, of the Bangledesh Academy of Fine Arts.

Religious leaders of different beliefs participated in the invocation, including Monsignor John Graham, Iman Mohammed Moinul, Pastor Hiram Ratliff, Pandit Vishnu Sukul, and Chaplain Rev. Luis Serrano.

Catholicism, Christianity, Islam and Hinduism – the major faiths practiced by the communities that compromise the district Assemblymember Sepulveda now serves.

The ceremony aligned with his motto of “community first”.

Our newly elected member is already at work.

On January 15, in response to the increase in gun violence, a bill was passed to strengthen gun control measures and increase criminal penalties of gun possession, one he supported.

And Assemblymember Sepulveda is no stranger to the community.

He has been a presence for many years.

For several years, he provided free legal services to those in his area. In late 2011, he co-founded the Cross Bronx Initiative, recognizing and wanting to address the environmental issues around the highway.

And in February 2012, Sen. Ruben Diaz and Sepulveda announced their plans to bring a lawsuit against MTA for an elevator to be installed in the Parkchester train station.

We look forward to the representation by Assemblymember Sepulveda, and to working together to make our communities stronger, cleaner and safer.

Como parte de nuestra serie en curso de BFP que destaca los espacios favoritos, las cosas y las personas de nuestra ciudad, nos dirigimos a Nilka Martell, quien continúa explorando su condado natal.

“Soy una nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres hermosos bebés Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dice Martell, de ascendencia puertorriqueña.

Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx. Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables. “Quiero que mis compañeros residentes sean conscientes y estén informados de qué tan hermoso es nuestro vecindario, lo que ofrece y cómo prestar ayuda a nuestro medio ambiente”.

De esta nueva etapa en su vida, Martell dice: “¡Nunca me he sentido tan viva!”

Esta semana Martell nos escribe de la juramentación de uno de los nuevos miembros de la Asamblea del condado.

 

El sábado 12 de enero, Luis Sepúlveda fue juramentado como el nuevo asambleísta del Distrito 87.

Cientos de personas de diversas clases sociales, razas, culturas y creencias, llenaron el Auditorio St. Raymond, donde se celebró la ceremonia.

El senador de los EE.UU. Chuck Schumer montó su bicicleta en Brooklyn para participar en las festividades y mostrar su apoyo.

Otros funcionarios que asistieron incluyeron al Representante de los EE.UU. José Serrano; los Senadores del estado de Nueva York, Rev. Rubén Díaz, José Serrano y Jeffrey Klein; los Asambleístas del estado de Nueva York Carl Heastie, Marcos Crespo, Vanessa Gibson y Mark Gjonaj de la 80a Asamblea de Distrito (el primer albanés americano jurado en la Legislatura del estado de Nueva York); John C. Liu Contralor del estado de Nueva York; los Concejales de la ciudad de Nueva York Joel Rivera y Annabel Palma; el líder Democrático del Distrito Kenny Agosto y el Presidente del Bronx Rubén Díaz Jr.

También hubo presentaciones del New York City Housing Authority Choir y de Margia Shiriti, de la Academia de Bellas Artes Bangledesh.

La ceremonia se alineó con su lema de “la comunidad primero”.

Nuestro miembro recién elegido ya está en acción. El 15 de enero, en respuesta al aumento de la violencia armada, se aprobó una ley para reforzar las medidas de control de armas y aumentar las sanciones penales de la posesión de armas, que él apoyó.

Y el asambleísta Sepúlveda no es ajeno a la comunidad, ha tenido presencia desde hace bastante tiempo. Durante varios años proporcionó servicios legales gratuitos a los de su área. A finales de 2011, él cofundó la iniciativa Cross Bronx, reconociendo y buscando abordar las cuestiones ambientales alrededor de la autopista. Y en febrero de 2012, el senador Rubén Díaz y Sepúlveda anunciaron sus planes de presentar una demanda en contra de MTA para que un ascensor se instalara en la estación de tren Parkchester.

Esperamos con interés la representación del asambleísta Sepúlveda y trabajaremos juntos para hacer que nuestras comunidades sean más fuertes, más limpias y más seguras.
