However, when she read the text she knew something wasn’t right with her son, a 17-year-old senior at the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation in the Bronx. “Mom, if you don’t hear from me today i just wanna say i love you and thank you for making my childhood great,” the message began. Valentín was horrified to read further and see her son’s reference to a stabbing at the school, a “hard lockdown,” and “blood on the floor.” “I was terrified,” said Valentín, who was in Staten Island at the time, far away from her son’s school. “I didn’t know what was going to happen to him.” After arriving home to find Dhwy safe, Valentín learned more about the fatal stabbing incident which rocked the high school and sent shockwaves throughout the city. According to police, 18-year-old Abel Cedeño stabbed two classmates with a knife he had brought to school. Matthew McCree, 15, was killed and Ariane Laboy, 16, was critically injured. Cedeño admitted to purchasing the switchblade knife and stabbing the teens, police said. NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said Cedeño told police he had been harassed for a period of two weeks at the school. Speaking the day after the incident, Dwhy said he did not witness the fatal stabbing, but was in an adjacent classroom. He said he was scared during the ensuing lockdown where he hid under his desk and remarked that he “couldn’t believe it” when he learned Cedeño was charged with stabbing two classmates. Cedeño, who has been charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter, is being represented by the Legal Aid Society, which said that Cedeño had been bullied by other students at the school. “We are currently meeting with our client and his family and reviewing the facts and circumstances of this case, including the long history of bullying and intimidation Abel has endured,” said the Legal Aid Society in a statement. The incident was the first homicide in a New York City school since 1993. Mayor Bill de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña visited the school the next morning, while grief counselors were made available to speak with students or parents. Dhwy Valentín said only a few students showed up for class the day after the stabbing. “We just played cards or whatever, just to try to get what happened off our minds,” he said. “It was just the two of us,” said his classmate, Felton Barker. Outside the building, some local residents stood outside the school, still in disbelief over what occurred. “It’s sad what happened,” said Nina, who lives a block from the school. “All three kids involved are so young, and all of their lives have been ruined in some way.” Valentín said Cedeño was the victim of bullying at the school and was harassed due his sexual orientation. “I believe he was pushed to his limits,” Valentín said. “The people who saw it, I feel bad for them, because now they won’t be able to sleep, they won’t be able to think, they’re all scared at what they saw.” Iesha Sekou, Chief Executive Officer of anti-violence activist group Street Corner Resources, said her group raced to the school following the incident to offer support for families and maintain order. Sekou was also there the following day to chat with students and lead a prayer vigil. She said more must be done to keep school bullying in check, and suggested that the city implement anti-violence response teams. “We need to create ways to train anti-violence people in schools who can do de-escalation, that can spot bullying early on, that can intervene. Teachers are not equipped to handle it,” she stated. “Bullying, in some schools, becomes the norm,” she added. “Bullying left unchecked only increases and does more harm.” The incident raised questions of whether metal detectors should be present in city schools — the building did not have one, but a metal detector was added the day after the stabbings. It also brought up concerns over the appropriateness of certain school co-locations, as the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation high school shares a Mohegan Avenue building with P.S. 67, which contains children as young as pre-kindergarten. “A school should not have high grades in with younger children,” said neighborhood resident Angel Lugo. “They should keep the small kids away from the big kids.” “High school students should not be in the same building as kindergarteners, period,” said Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr. “I have always opposed such co-locations. The culture of the high school halls is dramatically different than that of an elementary school, and small children should not be exposed to it.” Valentín claimed that bullying and fights have been a persistent problem at the school, and said she visited the principal to talk about the bullying issue. “It’s a big issue at the school, and they’re not addressing it,” she stated. “That’s why it escalated into murder.”
