Javier Muñoz, who now performs the title role in the smash Broadway hit Hamilton, will be honored by Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) with its 2016 Howard Ashman Award, for his activism in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Muñoz, diagnosed with HIV in 2002, has been outspoken about his status in the media, due to the stigma directed at people living with HIV/AIDS. Recently, he also survived a battle with cancer. Muñoz will receive the award at GMAC’s annual cabaret, which will take place on Mon., Sept. 19 at Joe’s Pub. Proceeds from the cabaret will support GMHC’s programs, services, and advocacy, which benefit approximately 10,000 clients each year. Broadway performer and Grammy-nominated recording artist Marty Thomas will serve as host for the cabaret. Other performers will include Ana Villafañe (On Your Feet), Annie Golden (Broadway Bounty Hunter), Robin de Jesús (In the Heights), Rosie Lani Fiedelman (The Lion King), Alton Fitzgerald White (The Lion King) and surprise guests. The Howard Ashman Award is named after the Oscar and Grammy-winning lyricist of Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and Aladdin who passed away in 1991 due to AIDS-related complications. “We applaud Javier Muñoz’s success on Broadway and are thankful for his openness about being HIV-positive,” said Kelsey Louie, chief executive officer of GMHC. “Every day at GMHC, we see clients who have been shunned by family and friends, others who have faced poor treatment while accessing services in their communities, and some struggle with mental health and substance abuse issues. Stigma and discrimination undermine HIV prevention efforts by making people afraid to seek prevention, testing and care.
