Klein presented certificates of appreciation to more than 100 parent coordinators and PTA presidents.

“An active PTA equals a good school,” Klein said at the event, which was held at F&J Pine Restaurant. “When the parents are engaged, the kids benefit – it’s as simple as that.”

George Hulse, Vice President of Community Engagement for Healthfirst, said that the parent leaders play an essential role in educating children.

“It takes a village to raise a child,” he remarked. “We want everyone to know that there are some heroes and sheroes there. They give of themselves, they are volunteers, in order to ensure that the community is stronger.”

Kinya Sims, PTA President at Bronxdale High School, said she appreciated the recognition.

“We work very hard to make sure the schools have strong parent engagement, and it’s nice to know that doesn’t go unnoticed,” she said.

“It’s awesome that they have this appreciation breakfast,” agreed Susan Geigel, the PTA President at P.S. 97. “We volunteer so much of our time, but it’s really a collective effort with everyone at the school. It’s about giving back for the kids.”

Klein said he had allocated nearly $1 million to bring programs from Project Boost to every school in his district. The nonprofit runs chess clubs, arts and music programs, class trips to museums, Broadway shows, baseball games, and more.

“Project Boost is great,” Klein said. “They work with students, work with parents and teachers to develop special programming for each school.”

Hulse remarked that Healthfirst is involved in supporting schools because strong education improves community health.

“Healthcare is more than just clinical outcomes. It’s also an educated family,” he said. “It’s ensuring that we eliminate domestic violence, eliminate bullying, making sure that people get jobs.”

“It takes a village to raise a child,” said Healthfirst Vice President George Hulse.
