On Sat., Sept. 6th, members of two legendary graffiti crews — TATS CRU of the Bronx and Brooklyn-based Soul Stoned Brothers — will team up to create a tribute mural that honors artist Christopher “Shadow” Lee.

An original member of Soul Stoned Brothers (SSB), Lee passed away on December 30, 2013 at age 55.

The mural will be created outside of The Point, at 940 Garrison Avenue in the Hunts Point section of The Bronx, where TATS CRU is based.

Artist George Colón, who founded SSB in 1972, said that Lee was a gifted and renowned graffiti artist in New York City for decades.

“I think this mural is an honorable way to bring awareness to his life and work,” said Colón, who will paint the mural with fellow SSB member Spar, as well as several TATS CRU artists.

The piece will be created on a metal wall that resembles the car of a subway train, said Colón.

“Just like tagging in the old days,” he remarked.

The mural’s design will be largely improvised.

“We might do a rough sketch beforehand, but mostly we’ll just see where our inspiration and creativity take us,” explained Colón.

“We’ll also try to incorporate some of Shadow’s designs.”

The artists will work on the mural from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on September 6.

At 2 p.m. that day, a reception to celebrate the mural will be held at Escape Restaurant on Jerome Avenue. It is open to the public, and will provide attendees with the chance to mingle with the graffiti artists.

The mural, which will be displayed for only a few days, can be viewed by the public by advance arrangements with TATS CRU.

Colón, who attended the High School for Art and Design together with Lee, has fond memories of creating graffiti throughout New York City with the man known as “Shadow.”

“We were one of the first graffiti crews in existence,” said Colón. “Back in the ’70’s and 80’s, to be in SSB was a big deal.”

Being part of a graffiti crew forms a personal bond that goes beyond the art, explained Colón.

“It was a serious brotherhood,” he stated.

“We could share and talk to each other about anything, which is the main purpose of a crew.”

For Colón, graffiti was an outlet for artistic expression and also a diversion from the drugs and violence that plagued the city during his childhood.

Currently a youth mentor, Colón feels that graffiti can still be transformative for urban kids of today.

“It brings creativity and freedom,” he said. “It allows kids to express themselves in a positive way.”

The mural honoring Christopher “Shadow” Lee will be created at The Point, located at 940 Garrison Avenue in the Bronx on Sat., Sept. 6th.
Starting at 2 p.m., a free buffet will be available at Escape Restaurant, 3489 Jerome Avenue.

El sábado 6 de septiembre, miembros de dos legendarios grupos de grafiti -TATS CRU del Bronx y Soul Stoned Brothers de Brooklyn- se unirán para crear un mural tributo que rinda homenaje al artista Christopher “Shadow” Lee.

Un miembro original de Soul Stoned Brothers (SSB), Lee falleció el 30 de diciembre de 2013 a los 55 años.

El mural será creado afuera de The Point, en el 940 de la avenida Garrison de la sección Hunts Point del Bronx, donde tiene su sede TATS CRU.

El artista George Colón, quien fundó SSB en 1972, dijo que Lee fue un talentoso y reconocido artista grafitero de la ciudad de Nueva York durante décadas.

“Creo que este mural es una forma honorable de crear conciencia sobre su vida y obra”, dijo Colón, quien pintará el mural con el también miembro de SSB Spar, así como varios artistas de TATS CRU.

La pieza será creada en una pared de metal similar al carro de un tren del metro, dijo Colón.

“Igual que marcar en los viejos tiempos”, destacó.

El diseño del mural será improvisado en gran medida.

“Podríamos hacer un esbozo de antemano, pero tendremos que ver hacia dónde nos llevan nuestra inspiración y creatividad”, explicó Colón.

“También trataremos de incorporar algunos de los diseños de Shadow”.

Los artistas trabajarán en el mural de 9 a.m. hasta la 1 p.m. el 6 de septiembre.
A las 2 de la tarde de ese día, se llevará a cabo una recepción para celebrar el mural en el restaurante Escape en la avenida Jerome. Está abierta al público y se ofrecerá a los asistentes la oportunidad de relacionarse con los artistas del grafiti.

El mural, que se mostrará durante unos pocos días, puede ser visto por el público mediante arreglos previos con TATS CRU.
Colón, quien asistió a la Escuela Superior de Arte y Diseño, junto con Lee, tiene buenos recuerdos acerca de crear grafitis en toda la ciudad de Nueva York con el hombre conocido como “Shadow”.

“Fuimos de los primeros equipos de grafiti que existieron”, dijo Colón. “Allá por los años 70 y 80, estar en SSB era algo importante”.

Ser parte de un grupo de grafiteros forma un vínculo personal que va más allá del arte, explicó Colón.

“Fue una hermandad seria”, declaró.

Para Colón, el grafiti fue una forma de expresión artística y también una distracción de las drogas y la violencia que asolaron la ciudad durante su infancia.

Actualmente un mentor de jóvenes, Colón siente que el grafiti puede todavía ser algo transf

ormador para los niños urbanos de hoy.

“Aporta creatividad y libertad”, dijo. “Permite a los niños expresarse de una manera positiva”.

El mural en honor a Christopher “Shadow” Lee se creará en The Point, ubicado en el 940 de la avenida Garrison en el Bronx, el sábado 6 de septiembre.

Comenzando a las 2 pm, un buffet gratuito estará disponible en el restaurante Escape, en el 3489 de la avenida Jerome.
