The holiday season is a time when familiar traditions come alive.
Last year at the United Palace, seeds for a new holiday tradition were sown, by adding a modern twist to a beloved Christmastime show.
The Hip Hop Nutcracker turned the classic two-act Russian ballet on its ear, taking the essential story elements and Tchaikovsky’s famous score but substituting hip hop dancers instead of a ballet group, and setting the story in modern-day Washington Heights.
“We were excited about the innovative nature of the show, but we didn’t know how audiences would react,” said Mike Fitelson, Executive Director of United Palace, which produced last year’s debut.
The Hip Hop Nutcracker proved to be a sensation in 2014, drawing over 5,000 people across two United Palace performances and a pair of gigs at New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark, NJ.
Buoyed by that success, the production will return to United Palace on November 20 and 21, and also be brought on tour for the first time, with shows in 10 other U.S. cities and three overseas performances in Russia.
While Fitelson considered last year’s debut “an experiment,” he said he intends for the show to become an annual holiday custom.
“It’s really gratifying that people have embraced it to such an extent,” said Fitelson. “What better way to bring people together during the holidays than to combine very different art forms to reach as wide an audience as possible?”
A DJ and electric violinist accompany a team of 11 hip hop dancers and digital scenery that complements the storyline, which locates the action to New Year’s Eve in Washington Heights.
While the story exudes uptown flavor, it retains iconic elements like the Mouse King and the Growing Tree.
The Hip Hop Nutcracker was developed by Fitelson along with Jennifer Weber, Artistic Director of the award-winning Decadancetheatre Company, which melded classical music and hip hop dance together for previous stage productions.
“We were faithful to the music and let it drive the storytelling,” Weber said of their reimagined version of the Nutcracker ballet, which debuted in Russia in 1892.
“The juxtaposition of the hip hop dance and classical music allows you to see the beauty of both in fresh ways, finding new rhythms in the music to accentuate,” she explained. “Since Tchaikovsky’s score doesn’t have a predictable beat, there’s always a sense of surprise in the movement.”
By inserting the vocabulary of hip hop movement into what has traditionally been a classical ballet, the creators of Hip Hop Nutcracker hope to broaden appreciation for both art forms.
Audiences who witnessed last year’s version of Hip Hop Nutcracker will notice some different elements this year: six of the 11 dancers are new, and nearly 90 percent of the projected backdrop images have been updated, most of them from the personal collection of Fitelson, also a professional photographer.
“In my mind, the story takes place on St. Nicholas Avenue around 184th Street, so you’ll see a lot of familiar sights from that area,” Fitelson said.
Legendary rapper and Harlem native Kurtis Blow will again serve as a guest MC, appearing on November 20 to perform a collection of rap hits and an original song written for The Hip Hop Nutcracker.
The November 21 matinee will serve as a benefit for youth arts programs hosted at United Palace, which are typically free to participants.
Children from the theater’s youth orchestra, hip hop dance and circus arts programs will entertain the audience before the Hip Hop Nutcracker performance starts.
“It’s exciting for kids that they get to strut their stuff on a large stage in front of these crowds,” remarked Fitelson. “And it gives the neighborhood a good sampling of the types of programs we have here.”
Production duties of The Hip Hop Nutcracker are now being handled by NJPAC, which booked the tour that includes stops in Newark, Miami, Atlanta, St. Paul, MN and Jacksonville, FL.
Bringing the show on the road will give audiences beyond New York City a taste of Northern Manhattan life.
“It was always part of our design that we’d get to export Washington Heights to the world,” said Fitelson.
He added, “It’s cool to think that the Moscow Ballet will be performing their Nutcracker in New York City this holiday season, then a few weeks later, we’ll be bringing an Americanized version of the show over to Russia.”
The Hip Hop Nutcracker will be performed at United Palace, 4140 Broadway at 175th Street, New York, NY, on Friday, November 20 at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 21, at 2:00 p.m. Doors open 90 minutes prior to each show.

La época navideña es un tiempo donde las tradiciones familiares cobran vida.
El año pasado en el United Palace, se sembraron nuevas semillas para una nueva tradición, añadiendo un toque moderno a un querido espectáculo navideño.
El “Hip Hop Nutcracker” cambio el clásico ballet ruso de dos actos, tomando los elementos esenciales de la historia y la famosa música de Tchaikovsky pero sustituyendo con bailarines de hip hop el grupo de ballet, y colocando la historia en un moderno día en Washington Heights.
“Estábamos emocionados acerca de la innovadora naturaleza del espectáculo, pero no sabíamos cómo iba a reaccionar la audiencia”, dijo Mike Fitelson, director ejecutivo del United Palace, el cual produjo el debut del año pasado.
El “Hip Hop Nutcracker”, demostró ser una sensación en el 2014, atrayendo a más de 5,000 personas en dos presentaciones en el United Palace y un par de conciertos en el Centro de Bellas Artes de New Jersey (NJPAC, por sus siglas en inglés) en Newark, NJ.
Alentados por ese éxito, la producción regresará al United Palace el 20 y 21 de noviembre, y también se llevará en gira por primera vez, con espectáculos en otras 10 ciudades en los E.U. y tres presentaciones en Rusia.
Aunque Fitelson consideró el debut del año pasado como “un experimento”, dijo que intenta que el espectáculo se convierta en una tradición anual.
“Es realmente gratificante que las personas lo hayan adoptado a tal punto”, dijo Fitelson. “Que mejor manera de unificar a las personas durante los días festivos que el combinar formas de artes bien diferentes para llegar a la mayor audiencia posible”.
Un DJ y un violinista electrónico acompañan a un equipo de 11 bailarines de hip hop y un escenario digital que complementa la historia, el cual ubica la acción en la noche de Año Viejo en Washington Heights.
Aunque la historia tiene sabor del Alto Manhattan, retiene elementos icónicos como el “Mouse King” y el árbol creciente.
El “Hip Hop Nutcraker” fue desarrollado por Fitelson junto con Jennifer Weber, directora artística y ganadora del premio Decadancetheatre Company, quien fusionó música clásica y baile de hip hop para previas producciones.
“Fuimos fieles a la música y dejamos que llevara la historia”, dijo Weber de su reinventada versión del ballet de “Nutcracker”, que debutó en Rusia en el 1892.
“La yuxtaposición del baile de hip hop y la música clásica le permite ver la belleza de ambos en nuevas formas, encontrando nuevos ritmos en la música para acentuar”, explicó Weber. “Ya que la música de Tchaikovsky no tiene un ritmo predecible, siempre hay un sentido de sorpresa en el movimiento”.
Insertando el vocabulario del movimiento de hip hop en lo que tradicionalmente ha sido un ballet clásico, los creadores de “Hip Hop Nutcraker” esperan ampliar la apreciación de ambas formas de arte.
Las audiencias que fueron testigos de la versión del año pasado del “Hip Hop Nutcraker” se darán cuenta de algunos elementos diferentes este año: seis de los 11 bailarines son nuevos, y casi el 90 por ciento de las imágenes presentadas han sido actualizadas, la mayoría de ellas de la colección personal de Fitelson, también fotógrafo profesional.
“En mi mente, la historia se desarrolla en la Avenida St. Nicholas alrededor de la Calle 184, así es que verán algunos sitios familiares del área”, dijo Fitelson.
El legendario rapero y oriundo de Harlem, Kurtis Blow, nuevamente servirá como maestro de ceremonia invitado, y el 20 de noviembre presentará una colección de hits de rap y una canción original escrita para el “Hip Hop Nutcracker”.
El matinée del 21 de noviembre servirá como beneficio para programas de arte para jóvenes auspiciado en el United Palace, los cuales típicamente son gratis para los participantes.
Niños de la orquesta de jóvenes del teatro, baile de hip hop y programas de arte de circos entretendrán la audiencia antes de que comience la presentación del “Hip Hop Nutcracker”.
“Es emocionante para los niños el poder presentarse en un amplio escenario al frente de estas multitudes”, señaló Fitelson. “Y le brinda al vecindario una buena muestra de los tipos de programas que tenemos aquí”.
Las funciones de producción del “Hip Hop Nutcracker” ahora están siendo manejadas por NJPA, el cual reservó la gira que incluye paradas en Newark, Miami, Atlanta, St. Paul, MN y Jacksonville, FL.
Llevando el espectáculo a otros lugares brindará a las audiencias fuera de la ciudad de Nueva York una muestra del sabor de la vida del Norte de Manhattan.
“Siempre fue parte de nuestro diseño el exportar Washington Heights al mundo”, dijo Fitelson.
“Es increíble pensar que el Ballet de Moscú estará interpretando su “Nutcracker” en la ciudad de Nueva York esta temporada navideña, luego unas semanas después, estaremos llevando una versión americanizada del espectáculo a Rusia”, señaló Fitelson.
El “Hip Hop Nutcracker” se presentará en el United Palace, en el 4140 de Broadway en la Calle 175, Nueva York, NY, el viernes, 20 de noviembre a las 8:00 p.m. y el sábado, 21 de noviembre a las 2:00 p.m. Las puertas abren 90 minutos antes de cada espectáculo.
