HIGH STAKES TESTING FORUM
Change the Stakes, a coalition of parents and educators in New York City, has announced a public discussion held by a panel of educators in which the impact of current high stakes testing on curriculum, instruction, and learning in New York City schools will be discussed. Spanish translation will be offered.
The discussion will be moderated by journalist Juan González, award-winning columnist of the New York Daily News and co-host of the national news program Democracy Now!
Change the Stakes is group of parents, teachers and others concerned about the effect high stakes-testing. As organizers state, “We oppose the over-emphasis on such tests and misuse of the results for purposes they were never intended to serve. We believe high-stakes testing must be replaced by educationally-sound, reliable and valid forms of student, teacher, and school assessment.”
The panel will include Shael Polakow-Suransky (Chief Academic Officer and Senior Deputy Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education), Dr. Pedro Noguera (Professor of Education at New York University), and teacher and activist Brian Jones.
In addition to Change the Stakes, the list of sponsors includes The Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center (Shabazz Center); the Harlem/Washington Heights Education Film Screening and Community Discussion Series (sponsored by Total Equity Now, the Community League of the Heights, and the A.M.E. Zion Church on the Hill); the offices of Councilmembers Robert Jackson and Ydanis Rodriguez and Community Education Council 6.
The panel will be held on Mon., Dec. 10th at The Shabazz Center, located at 3940 Broadway at West 165th Street.

FORO SOBRE EXAMENES DE ALTO RIESGO
‘Change the Stakes’, una coalición de padres y maestros en la ciudad de Nueva York, ha anunciado una discusión pública dirigida por un panel de maestros en el cual se discutirá el impacto de los actuales exámenes en materias, instrucción y aprendizaje en las escuelas de la ciudad de Nueva York. Se ofrecerá traducción al español.
La discusión será moderada por el periodista Juan González, ganador del premio por columnista en el New York Daily News y co anfitrión del programa nacional de noticias ‘Democracy Now’. ‘Change the Stakes’ es un grupo de padres, maestros y otros preocupados sobre el efecto de los exámenes. Como declaran los organizadores, “nosotros nos oponemos al énfasis en tales exámenes y mal uso de los resultados para fines que no pretendían servir. Pensamos que estos exámenes deberían de ser reemplazados por unos educativos, formas de evaluación escolar confiables y válidas”.
El panel incluirá a Shael Polakow-Suransky (Oficial Académico y Canciller Diputado del Departamento de Educación de la ciudad de Nueva York), el Dr. Pedro Noguera (Profesor de Educación en la Universidad de Nueva York) y el maestro y activista Brian Jones.
