“Help is out there”
Health fair promotes local services

An estimated 250 people walked through Tremont Park on Tues., Aug. 12th to learn more about the resources available to help them live healthier lives.
“We want them to know help is out there,” said Tremont Health Center Director Katrina Adams. One of the main benefits of the community event, she noted, is the openness that allows people to ask questions, share their own stories of their struggles and solicit information on the services they need most.
The Third Annual Health Fair was sponsored by Community Healthcare Network (CHN), and coincided with National Health Center Week. This year’s theme was “Celebrating America’s Health Centers: Local Engines for Healthier Communities,” intended to underscore how community health centers provide access to cost effective health care.
CHN is a nonprofit organization that provides community-based care for the underserved in New York City. According to the organization, it serves more than 75,000 individuals a year who would otherwise have little or no access to critical health care.
New York State Senator Gustavo Rivera spoke with residents. Sen. Rivera is a co-sponsor of the Bronx CAN (Changing Attitudes Now) Health Initiative and the author of several health bills.
Adams said 18 different organizations gave out information on topics including fire safety, health insurance, lead poisoning, nutrition, breastfeeding and safe sex.
Adams said most of the participants she spoke with live in the immediate neighborhood, and the fair is one more opportunity to make residents “aware” of the free and low-cost services available to them.
“We see a lot of patients from the Bronx,” said Danielle Jettoo, Outreach Coordinator for
Choices Women’s Medical Center in Jamaica, Queens.
Jettoo said the for-profit center offers a range of medical services, including full gynecological care, contraception, termination and counseling. Unlike many clinics, Jettoo said immediate and same-day appointments are available to women who need them.
“A range of different contraceptions means more control,” said Robert Williams, also from Choices Women’s Medical Center. “And that affects every other decision in life, career, education.”
Williams said it’s important for women’s health clinics to be out in the community, to “get rid of the stigma.”
“We need to speak about it (women’s health) and normalize it,” Williams said.

Se estima que 250 personas caminaron por Tremont Park el martes 12 de agosto para aprender más sobre los recursos disponibles para ayudarles a tener vidas más saludables.
“Queremos que sepan la ayuda está ahí”, dijo la directora del Centro de Salud Tremont, Katrina Adams. Uno de los principales beneficios del evento comunitario, señaló, es la apertura, pues permite a la gente hacer preguntas, compartir sus propias historias de lucha y solicitar información sobre los servicios que más necesitan.
La Tercera Feria de Salud Anual fue patrocinada por la Red de Salud Comunitaria (CHN por sus siglas en inglés), y coincidió con la Semana Nacional del Centro de Salud. El tema de este año fue “Celebrando los centros de salud de los Estados Unidos: motores locales para comunidades más saludables”, destinado a destacar cómo los centros de salud comunitarios proporcionan acceso a una atención de salud por un costo rentable.
CHN es una organización sin fines de lucro que brinda atención comunitaria para los más necesitados en la ciudad de Nueva York. De acuerdo con la organización, presta servicios a más de 75,000 personas al año que de otro modo tienen poco o ningún acceso a la atención crítica de salud.
Gustavo Rivera, senador del estado de Nueva York, habló con los residentes. El senador Rivera es uno de los patrocinadores de la Iniciativa CAN de Salud del Bronx (Changing Attitudes Now, Cambiando Actitudes Ahora) y el autor de varios proyectos de ley de salud.
Adams explicó que 18 organizaciones diferentes repartieron información sobre temas como la seguridad contra incendios, los seguros de salud, el envenenamiento por plomo, la nutrición, la lactancia materna y el sexo seguro.
Adams señaló que la mayoría de los participantes con los que habló viven cerca, y que la feria es una oportunidad más para que los residentes “estén al tanto” de los servicios gratuitos o de bajo costo disponibles para ellos.
“Vemos a muchos pacientes del Bronx”, dijo Danielle Jettoo, coordinadora de Extensión del Centro Médico Choices Women’s de Jamaica, Queens. Jettoo dijo que el centro con fines de lucro ofrece una gama de servicios médicos, incluido cuidado ginecológico completo, anticoncepción, aborto y terapia. A diferencia de muchas clínicas, Jettoo dijo que citas inmediatas y para el mismo día están disponibles para las mujeres que las necesitan. “Una gama de diferentes anticonceptivos significa más control”, dijo Robert Williams, también del Centro Médico Choices Women’s. “Y eso afecta todas las otras decisiones en la vida, la carrera, la educación”. Williams señaló que es importante para las clínicas de salud de la mujer estar ahí en la comunidad, para “deshacerse del estigma”.
“Tenemos que hablarlo (la salud de la mujer) y normalizarlo”, dijo Williams.
