He can do it at Cannes

Nelson Peña is going global.
The Bronx resident’s latest film, Trabajo, was recently nominated for official selection to the Short Film Corner of the 2015 Cannes International Film Festival in France.
Trabajo tells the story of an 11-year-old deaf Dominican boy who searches for a job because he strongly feels the need to help his financially struggling single mother make ends meet.
In one scene, the mother tells the boy that he is the “man of the house” after his father abandoned them.
“He takes it seriously,” explained Peña. “He thinks he needs to support both his mom and younger brother.”
In the film, the boy is unable to obtain work because he is not of legal age for employment.
“The story is really about the tremendous effort he makes,” commented Peña.
Peña said he created his 14-minute film because he was inspired to tell a story through the eyes of someone who had difficulty communicating.
“I like giving voice to someone who normally doesn’t have one.”
He was intrigued by the concept of making a deaf character the leading role in the project.
“If you look at films and television, usually deaf characters have very minor parts, or are sometimes the butt of jokes,” said Peña. “I wanted to make a film where the deaf character was the focal point and actually carried the story, and to do it in a respectful way.”
Prior to Cannes in May, Trabajo will have its world premiere at the Chicago Latino Film Festival in April, and can be seen by New Yorkers this June at the Dominican Film Festival.
Though Peña said the Cannes short film segment is a non-competitive section, with no awards distributed to the filmmakers, he regarded the prestige of showing his film on such a grand stage as a priceless return.
“The exposure of having your film shown at such a legendary festival is tremendous,” he remarked.
Peña said he is flattered by the early praise his film has been receiving.
Locally, City Councilmember Ydanis Rodriguez, a longtime supporter of the arts and of independent film, offered his congratulations.
“I am very proud to see Trabajo be accepted into the renowned Cannes Film Festival,” said Rodríguez in a statement. “The film beautifully portrays the struggles of hard working families while highlighting our community’s heritage.”
Peña is perhaps best known as a filmmaker for You Are Not Famous, a series of short documentaries, filmed entirely on an iPhone, that depict the lives of everyday people.
“You might think you have the most boring life,” said Peña. “But really, everybody has something to say.”
A New York City native, Peña has lived in the Bronx since the age of eight and would later graduate from The City College of New York’s film school.
“I was always interested in artistic things, and always drawing and painting as a child, but it wasn’t until later in life I that became intrigued by film,” said Peña.
He wrote the script for Trabajo nearly a decade ago, but only began producing the film in earnest more recently, shooting it over three days in August 2014.
The cast of Trabajo features notable names such as Laura Gómez, a local actress with roles in Orange is the New Black and Law & Order, as well as Mateo Gómez, a veteran actor who has appeared in several major films, including Che: Part One and The Bone Collector.
But Peña insisted that the real star of Trabajo is 11-year-old Jafrar Paulino, a Bronx resident who had no previous acting experience.
Paulino’s real-life cousin, Christian Geréz, was cast as the main character’s younger brother.
Peña met the two boys somewhat accidentally, after witnessing them playing basketball behind their home with a group of friends.
“I thought their chemistry was amazing,” said Peña. “There was something there, and I just knew they were the ones for the film.”
The director praised the effort by Paulino, who had to learn American Sign Language for the role.
“He really carried the film,” said Peña. “It was impressive considering he had never acted before and he couldn’t speak in the movie.”
For his next project, Peña hopes to complete a feature-length film, and plans to scope out potential screenplays while in Europe for Cannes.
He revealed his hope that the film be highly regarded by those in the hard-of-hearing community.
“I hope that they embrace my film,” said Peña. “I did it with nothing but respect and plenty of passion.”

La última película del residente del Bronx, Trabajo, fue nominada recientemente para la selección oficial del Short Film Corner del Festival Internacional de Cine de Cannes 2015 en Francia.
Trabajo cuenta la historia de un niño sordo dominicano de 11 años de edad, el cual busca un trabajo porque siente la firme necesidad de ayudar a su madre soltera, quien tiene problemas financieros para llegar a fin de mes.
En una escena, la madre le dice al niño que él es el “hombre de la casa” después de que su padre los abandona.
“Él lo toma muy en serio”, explicó Peña. “Cree que tiene que mantener tanto a su madre como a su hermano menor”.
En la película, el niño no puede conseguir un empleo porque no tiene la edad legal para trabajar.
“La historia trata sobre el tremendo esfuerzo que hace”, comentó Peña, quien dijo que creó su película de 14 minutos porque estaba inspirado para contar una historia a través de los ojos de alguien con dificultades para comunicarse.
“Me gusta dar voz a quienes normalmente no la tienen”.
Estaba intrigado por el concepto de hacer de un personaje sordo el papel principal en el proyecto.
“Si observas el cine y la televisión, por lo general los personajes sordos tienen partes muy pequeñas o a veces son objeto de bromas”, dijo Peña. “Quería hacer una película donde el personaje sordo fuera el central, que llevara la historia y lo hiciera de una manera respetuosa”.
Antes de Cannes en mayo, Trabajo tendrá su estreno mundial en el Festival de Cine Latino de Chicago en abril, y podrá ser vista por los neoyorquinos este junio en el Festival de Cine Dominicano.
Aunque Peña dijo que el segmento de cortometrajes de Cannes es una sección no competitiva, sin premios distribuidos a los cineastas, considera como un retorno de valor incalculable el prestigio de mostrar su película en un gran escenario.
“Que tu película sea exhibida en un festival tan legendario es algo tremendo”, comentó.
Peña dijo que se siente halagado por los elogios que ha recibido su película.
A nivel local, Ydanis Rodríguez -concejal de la ciudad y veterano partidario de las artes y del cine independiente- ofreció sus felicitaciones.
“Estoy muy orgulloso de ver que Trabajo haya sido aceptada en el famoso Festival de Cine de Cannes”, dijo Rodríguez en un comunicado. “La película retrata muy bien la lucha de las familias trabajadoras, además de destacar la herencia de nuestra comunidad”.
Peña es quizás mejor conocido como cineasta por You Are Not Famous, una serie de documentales cortos -filmados en su totalidad con un iPhone- que retratan la vida de la gente común.
“Puedes pensar que tienes la vida más aburrida”, señaló Peña. “Pero en realidad todos tienen algo que decir”.
Originario de la ciudad de Nueva York, Peña ha vivido en el Bronx desde los ocho años de edad, y se graduó de la escuela de cine del City College de Nueva York.
“Siempre estuve interesado en las cosas artísticas, cuando era niño dibujaba y pintaba. No fue sino hasta después en la vida que empecé a interesarme en el cine”, explicó.
Escribió el guión de Trabajo hace casi una década, pero comenzó a producir la película en serio recientemente, rodándola durante tres días en agosto de 2014.
El elenco de Trabajo cuenta con nombres notables como Laura Gómez, una actriz local con papeles en Orange is the New Black y Law & Order, así como Mateo Gómez, un actor veterano que ha aparecido en varias películas importantes, incluyendo Che: Part One y The Bone Collector.
Pero Peña insiste en que la verdadera estrella de Trabajo es Jafrar Paulino, de once años de edad, un residente del Bronx que no tenía experiencia previa actuando.
Primo en la vida real de Paulino, Christian Geréz fue elegido como hermano menor del protagonista.
Peña se reunió con los dos chicos un poco por accidente, después de verlos jugando baloncesto detrás de su casa con un grupo de amigos.
“Pensé que su química era increíble”, explicó. “Había algo ahí, simplemente supe que eran los indicados para la película”.
El director elogió el esfuerzo de Paulino, quien tuvo que aprender el lenguaje americano de señas para el papel.
“Él realmente lleva encima la película”, dijo Peña. “Es algo impresionante considerando que nunca había actuado y que no puede hablar en la película”.
Para su próximo proyecto, Peña espera completar un largometraje y planea buscar guiones potenciales mientras esté en Europa para asistir al Festival de Cannes.
Reveló su deseo de que la película sea apreciada por aquellos en la comunidad con dificultades de audición.
“Espero que acepten mi película”, dijo. “La hice con mucho respeto y pasión”.
