Officials gathering to break ground recently on an affordable housing complex‎ noted that the work of its namesake – civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. – was as necessary now as during his lifetime.

“When you look at these challenging times, where diversity is being questioned and challenged, I think it’s fitting that we’re naming this ‘MLK,’” noted Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr.

Díaz and fellow officials gathered on Fri., Aug. 18^th for a groundbreaking ceremony at MLK Plaza, an affordable housing complex in Mott Haven designed to provide apartments to very low-income individuals and families.

The project, located on East 147th Street at Timpson Place, will feature 167 units of affordable housing as well as a fitness center, laundry facilities and community rooms. It is led by affordable housing builder Radson Development.

The project is slated to be completed by the end of 2018, said Daniel Rad, Principal of Radson Development.

Díaz and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito joined Radson and other project partners to place shovels in the ground on the 177,000 square-foot-project, which required a rezoning of the site.

MLK Plaza takes its name from nearby Martin Luther King Triangle, a small park on the corner of East 149th Street and Austin Place.

The housing project is part of the Extremely Low and Low-Income Affordability program of the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, and will feature tiers to serve populations from 25 percent to 90 percent of Area Median Income (AMI).

“It’s really important when we do these new developments that we create these mixed incomes in one location, so that we’re investing in the current population but you’re also investing so when these kids grow up, they have a place to live as well in a higher income band,” said Rad.

Mark-Viverito, whose term limit is soon coming to an end, reflected on her legacy in the Council district, noting that around 10,000 affordable housing units were preserved or built in the district during her tenure.

“It’s always a great day to be able to be at events like this when we’re highlighting the partnership between the private sector and government,” she said.

Díaz noted that over 5,000 new housing units were created in the Bronx in the past year, which he called symbolic of “the renaissance, the turnaround that the Bronx is experiencing.”

Eric Enderlin, President of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), the city’s housing finance agency, said HDC provided close to $40 million in financing for the project.

“[It’s] an opportunity to celebrate the values that we all share, to keep doing this kind of great work in the city of New York, and thinking about ways that affordable housing does this, to kind of sow the seeds for a better and unjust society and tomorrow,” remarked Enderlin, who said that 40 percent of units at MLK Plaza will be made permanently affordable.

When complete, the 12-story MLK Plaza will contain 16 studio apartments, 67 one-bedrooms, 61 two-bedrooms, and 21 three-bedrooms.

“Siempre es un gran día para poder estar en eventos como este cuando destacamos la asociación entre el sector privado y el gobierno”, dijo.
