It was their time.
Whether it was taking a spin on the dance floor or testing their trivia skills, Bronx seniors recently had their choice from among a host of fun activities during a day focused on them.
The Bronxwood Assisted Living Center on East Gun Hill Road held the celebration on Mon., Sep. 29th, in honor of Assisted Living Month. The official proclamation was made by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in recognition of New York’s more than 2.6 million residents who are age 65 and older.
According to the Governor’s office, the Empire State is home to the third-largest elderly population in the nation, a number that is expected to grow over the next decade. The U.S. Census Bureau has indicated that older adults are increasingly living longer, with the number of New Yorkers aged 85 and older projected to double by 2030.
In response, Empire State Association of Assisted Living (ESAAL) members throughout the state, including the Bronxwood Center, hosted a number of events that brought together residents, families, employees, and volunteers.
“Assisted Living Month presents an opportunity for all aging New Yorkers and their families to discuss their long-term care needs and consider assisted living as an advantageous option,” said Lisa Newcomb, ESAAL Executive Director. “For those no longer able to live alone, licensed assisted living is a viable alternative, offering them not only assistance with daily living, but many opportunities for socialization and activity allowing seniors to maintain independence.”
On Monday, seniors gathered in the brightly decorated community rooms for music, conversation and trivia games in which City Councilmember Andy King participated.
“[The center] has been doing a great job helping people go through their physical and emotional challenges,” said Councilmember King.
Established over 30 years ago, the Bronxwood facility offers independent and assisted living choices within a supportive residential setting. There are newly renovated resident rooms, recreation programming, personal care and medication assistance, among other services and programs.
“It’s wonderful waking up everyday knowing that your decisions will improve the quality of their lives in a positive way,” said Bronxwood Administrator Glenn Rappaport.
He said he was thrilled that a day could be set aside to honor the adults.
“They are enjoying themselves and getting the proper care,” he smiled. “That’s what it is about.”
“I felt that we were really a part of the event,” said Glenda King (no relation to the Councilmember). “I learned so much.”
And she said that she and her fellow seniors planned on learning – and teaching.
“The fruits of our labor are being passed on,” added King as she surveyed the room. “We are leaving this for others to keep on improving.”

Ya fuese haciendo un giro en la pista de baile o probando sus conocimientos de cultura general, las personas mayores del Bronx recientemente pudieron elegir de entre una serie de actividades divertidas durante un día dedicado a ellos.
El Centro de Vida Asistida Bronxwood en East Gun Hill Road llevó a cabo la celebración el lunes 29 de septiembre en honor al mes de la Vida Asistida. El anuncio oficial fue hecho por el gobernador Andrew Cuomo en reconocimiento a más de 2.6 millones de residentes de Nueva York que tienen 65 años o más.
De acuerdo con la oficina del gobernador, Empire State es hogar de la tercera mayor población de adultos mayores de la nación, un número que se espera crezca en la próxima década. La oficina del censo de Estados Unidos ha indicado que los adultos mayores viven cada vez más tiempo, con un número proyectado de neoyorquinos de 85 años y más duplicándose en el año 2030.
En respuesta, los miembros en todo el estado de la Asociación de Vida Asistida Empire State (ESAAL por sus siglas en inglés), incluyendo el Centro Bronxwood, organizaron una serie de eventos que reunieron a residentes, familias, empleados y voluntarios.
“El mes de la Vida Asistida presenta una oportunidad para que todos los adultos mayores neoyorquinos y sus familias discutan sus necesidades de atención a largo plazo y consideren la vida asistida como una opción ventajosa”, dijo Lisa Newcomb, directora ejecutiva de ESAAL. “Para aquellos que ya no pueden vivir solos, la vida asistida con licencia es una alternativa viable, ofreciéndoles no sólo ayuda con la vida diaria, sino muchas oportunidades para socializar y actividades que les permitan a las personas mayores mantener su independencia”.
El lunes, los adultos mayores se reunieron en salones comunitarios decorados alegremente para escuchar música, conversar y jugar juegos de cultura general en los cuales concejal de la ciudad Andy King participó.
“[El Centro] ha estado haciendo un gran trabajo ayudando a la gente a enfrentar diversos desafíos físicos y emocionales”, dijo el concejal King.
Establecidas hace más de 30 años, las instalaciones de Bronxwood ofrecen opciones de vida independiente y asistida en un entorno residencial de apoyo. Hay habitaciones recientemente renovadas para los residentes, programación recreativa, cuidado personal y asistencia de medicamentos, entre otros servicios y programas.
“Es maravilloso despertar todos los días sabiendo que sus decisiones van a mejorar la calidad de sus vidas de una manera positiva”, dijo el administrador de Bronxwood Glenn Rappaport.
Comentó estar encantado de que un día pudiera reservarse para honrar a los adultos.
“Ellos están disfrutando y recibiendo la atención adecuada”, sonrió. “De eso se trata”.
“Sentí que éramos realmente una parte del evento”, dijo Glenda King (sin relación con el concejal). “He aprendido mucho”.
Y dijo que ella y sus compañeros mayores planeaban aprender, y enseñar.
“Los frutos de nuestro trabajo están siendo transmitidos”, agregó King mientras recorría la habitación. “Estamos dejando esto para que otros puedan seguir mejorando”.
