Give these do-gooders their due. A trio of the borough’s park volunteers has graduated from the Partnerships for Parks Fellowship Academy, a free, six-month training program for community park leaders. Linda Kemp, Denise Cooper and Elsa Mitchel were the three Bronx volunteers in the academy’s 2016 graduating class, which totaled 40 people from throughout the city. A ceremony honoring the graduates was held on Wed., Nov. 9 at the Gran Morsi restaurant in Manhattan. City Parks Foundation Executive Director Heather Lubov and NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver were on hand to present certificates of completion to all graduates. The Partnerships Academy Fellowship supports community-based park groups and individual volunteers through public workshops and one-on-one consulting sessions. During the 2016 fellowship period, participants learned about the city’s permitting process, working with elected officials, fiscal sponsorships, and how to achieve 501(c)(3) status. Fellows then worked to recruit new volunteers for their groups, identified local businesses to sponsor community festivals, and planned park clean-ups and other events. Cooper and Mitchel, both of Educators and Friends at Bronx Park Oval and Zimmerman Playground in the Allerton section, were able to launch their park group by establishing an executive committee and obtaining a tax identification number. Partnering with other groups through the Fellowship helped them learn the best ways to structure their group and attract and retain engaged members. Kemp, of Bringing the Peace at Drew Park in the Bronx’s Claremont Village neighborhood, set a goal of improving the relationship between the police officers and youth in her park. In July, she organized a Bring the Peace basketball game, where neighborhood youth and officers from the 42nd Precinct faced off on the court. For an August rematch, Kemp decided to switch up the teams, mixing youth players and officers to encourage bonding and teamwork. Kemp also regularly hosts clean-up and beautification efforts in the park, and recently helped host a Breast Cancer Walk and health screening event at the Claremont Neighborhood Center.
