It will be a happier Thanksgiving for thousands of families this year, courtesy of a turkey giveaway in the South Bronx.

ArchCare at Home gave away 2,000 turkeys on November 20 in front of ArchCare’s San Vicente de Paul Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Intervale Avenue.

This marks the 35th straight year that the organization, formerly known as Dominican Sisters Family Health Service, has hosted the turkey giveaway.

“This event is about people helping people,” said Mary Zagajeski, President and Chief Executive Officer of ArchCare at Home, who noted that the area is one of the poorest Congressional districts in the U.S. “There is such a great need in the Bronx.”

Each year, the giveaway is made possible by real estate investor Joel Fishman, who is aided by donations from colleagues to provide the huge haul of turkeys.

The center is located on Intervale Avenue.

Fishman’s son, Mark Fishman, said the turkeys are ranch raised by Norbest Turkeys in Utah.

“We need a lot of turkeys every year, so these are grown for us,” he said.

A truckload of frozen birds was unloaded in front of the nursing home by volunteers from ArchCare and IBEW Local No. 3 as eager recipients lined up to receive a turkey.

Morris Avenue resident Freddy Ortega said the giveaway would be a big help for low-income residents in the area.

“The majority of people around here really need it,” he said. “I see a lot of the same faces at the food pantries around this part of the Bronx. The lines get longer at the pantries every year.”

“Something like this really helps take the burden off of people,” said a local woman who declined to give her name. “It means people they can feed their family on Thanksgiving and not have to buy as much food.”

Local officers from the 41st Precinct were on hand to distribute tickets for acquiring a turkey.

“Community relations with the police often involve negativity, so it’s great to see them out here with a smile on their face,” said neighborhood resident Crystal. “It means something to the community.”

ArchCare at Home is a certified home health agency offering in-home nursing care and rehab, home health aides, pastoral care and maternal health assistance.

The Bronx turkey giveaway is one of numerous charitable programs conducted by ArchCare at Home to promote the well-being of residents in underserved neighborhoods, said Zagajeski.

“It’s critical to our mission of giving back to the community,” she said.

Fishman family members were on hand to help distribute turkeys.

Fishman’s daughter Dena Roth said she recalls doing so since she was a child, as her father has supplied the turkeys for more than three decades. This year she brought her two sons – Alex, 9, and Matthew, 11.

“It’s heartwarming to do this,” Roth remarked. “We look forward to it all year.”

“It’s something we’re passionate about,” added Mark Fishman. “It’s great to give back.”

“People around here really need it,” said resident Freddy Ortega.
