Now it’s their turn to stay put. For more than 45 years, Bronx Legal Services has provided low-income, at-risk borough residents with free legal help for housing, immigration, employment and tenant’s rights. While the nonprofit has helped thousands of Bronx residents fight eviction and stay in their homes, staffers say that the organization lacked a suitable home of its own. That has changed with the introduction of Bronx Legal Services’ new headquarters at 349 East 149th Street, dubbed the Steven B. Telzak Center for Social Justice, in honor of the group’s longtime Project Director, who passed away in 2010. The new site gives Bronx Legal Services, part of Legal Services NYC, substantially more room for its staff of more than 80 people, and comfortable space for meeting with clients. “This is a true home,” stated Raun Rasmussen, Executive Director of Legal Services NYC. “The space that we had before was substandard, both for staff and our clients.” Rasmussen said that the group’s previous headquarters on Courtlandt Avenue was in a state of disrepair, with visible holes in the walls. “Frankly, seeing that, it wouldn’t have surprised me if some clients questioned our ability to fight their landlord,” remarked Rasmussen. “They deserve a professional space, where they know that they’re going to get high-quality services when they walk in the door.” While Bronx Legal Services has been renting two floors at East 149th Street site since 2014, it was able to purchase the same space outright in December 2015. “From a financial perspective, owning means a lot,” said Project Director Jane Aoyama-Martin. “Our overhead is fixed. Over the years, we’re going to save hundreds of thousands of dollars that we can use for client services.” While Rasmussen acknowledged the cost savings that will be realized by avoiding rental costs, he said that the purchase also solidifies the nonprofit’s place in the community it has served for nearly half a century. “Making a commitment like this, by purchasing office space in the Bronx, builds a foundation for the next 50 years of fighting poverty and working for social and economic justice.” The borough’s largest provider of free legal services, the group serves more than 10,000 Bronx clients annually. The purchase of the new office was made possible by a combination of city and state funding. “It came together because of the overwhelming support of the electeds in the Bronx, [to whom] we are extremely grateful,” said Jennifer Levy, who served as Bronx Legal Services’ Project Director when the group first began the move to its new location. “I think it goes without saying that having a place that reflects the respect that Legal Services has for its clients is vital,” said Levy, who is currently General Counsel in Charge of Litigation at the NYC Public Advocate’s Office. “It’s important that the space reflects the high quality of care that they put into all their cases.” Aoyama-Martin said that the new offices were funded by a variety of sources, including the State Assembly, City Council, Bronx Borough President’s office and about $300,000 in private donations. “All those entities coming together for a common cause validates the work we’re doing and the need that exists here,” said board member Joseph Moodhe. In addition to owning the ninth and tenth floors of the building, Bronx Legal Services is also renting space on two other floors. The site features two main intake rooms for receiving clients, more storage flexibility and additional office space for attorneys, case workers and support staff. The location is also easier for clients to access, due to close proximity to subway and bus lines, and improved wheelchair accessibility, said Nelson Mar, a senior staff attorney. “The other location was difficult for some disabled or elderly clients to visit,” Mar said. “We really wanted to stay in this immediate neighborhood and this is a much better location.” There are now numerous conference rooms for client meetings and several small touches, such as a collection of toys for children of clients to entertain themselves with. “We work with a lot of families, and it’s important that they feel comfortable when they come in here,” said Mar. “This space is much more welcoming,” agreed Moodhe. “The clients are very grateful. There’s been a lot of thought that went into making this as accessible as possible to the communities that we serve.” At an official ribbon-cutting at the new office on June 10, Bronx Legal Services workers who gathered to celebrate were joined by State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie. “For all of you here, you make sure that people who can’t always afford it can get justice,” Heastie told staffers. “You’re doing a noble service.” Heastie said he was proud to help secure funding for the new headquarters while in the State Assembly. “Although I’m now the Speaker, and I have to care about all 62 counties, I’ve not been shy about telling everybody which county is first in my heart,” remarked Heastie. “Thank you for what you do to provide services to people of the Bronx.” For more information on Bronx Legal Services, please visit www.legalservicesnyc.org or call 718.928.3700. Si bien Rasmussen reconoció los ahorros que se realizarán al evitar los costos de alquiler, dijo que la compra también solidifica el lugar de la organización no lucrativa en la comunidad a la que ha servido durante casi medio siglo. “Hacer un compromiso de este tipo, comprando espacio de oficinas en el Bronx, construye una base para los próximos 50 años de luchar contra la pobreza y trabajar por la justicia social y económica”. El grupo, que es el mayor proveedor de servicios legales gratuitos del condado, cuenta con más de 10,000 clientes del Bronx anualmente. La compra de la nueva oficina fue posible gracias a una combinación de financiamiento del estado y la ciudad. “Aunaron esfuerzos debido al aplastante apoyo de los funcionarios electos en el Bronx, con quienes estamos muy agradecidos”, dijo Jennifer Levy, quien se desempeñó como directora de Proyectos Servicios Legales del Bronx cuando el grupo comenzó el cambio a su nueva ubicación. “Creo que no hace falta decir que tener un lugar que refleje el respeto que Servicios Legales tiene para sus clientes es vital”, dijo Levy, quien es actualmente asesora general a cargo de los litigios en la Oficina de la Defensora Pública de NYC. “Es importante que el espacio refleje la alta calidad de la atención que ponen en todos sus casos”. Ahora existen numerosas salas de conferencias para reuniones con clientes y varios pequeños detalles, como una colección de juguetes con la que los hijos de los clientes se pueden entretener. “Trabajamos con muchas familias y es importante que se sientan cómodas cuando vienen”, dijo Mar. “Este espacio es mucho más acogedor”, estuvo de acuerdo Moodhe. “Los clientes están muy agradecidos. Ha habido mucha reflexión para hacer este lugar lo más accesible posible para las comunidades a las que servimos”. En una ceremonia oficial de corte de cinta en la nueva oficina el 10 de junio, los trabajadores de Servicios Legales del Bronx que se reunieron para celebrar estuvieron acompañados por el presidente de la Asamblea Estatal, Carl Heastie. “Todos ustedes aquí, asegúrense de que las personas que no siempre pueden costearla, obtengan justicia”, dijo Heastie a los miembros del personal. “Están haciendo un noble servicio”.
