Going Large at Lehman

Major expansion at performing arts center

It’s a new arena for the arts.

The Lehman Center for the Performing Arts is about to undergo a major expansion and improvement project.

Located on the campus of Lehman College, the 2,310-seat concert hall is the largest venue of its kind in the Bronx.

The $15.4 million project will add nearly 5,600 square feet of space to provide for a new box office, administrative offices, restroom facilities and an elevator. The renovation will also provide new heating and cooling systems and make the building ADA-compliant, adding wheelchair-accessible viewing areas within the theater.

Lehman officials held a groundbreaking event late last month, which was attended by Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr., State Assemblymembers Jeffrey Dinowitz and José Rivera, City Councilmember Andrew Cohen and City University of New York (CUNY) Chancellor James B. Milliken.

“What this renovation will allow us to do is expand our impact,” said Lehman College President José Luis Cruz. “By bringing people that traditionally would not have known about Lehman Center, or that may not have been able to come due to limitations with ADA compliance, will now see it as an opportunity to take in the artistic and cultural value that we bring to the Bronx.”

Eva Bornstein, Executive Director of Lehman Center for the Performing Arts, said the facility puts on more than 100 shows per year, and is also rented out to community organizations for special performances.

“What this will do is make the center more viable for use by more organizations, and more accessible to people from all over the Bronx with the ADA upgrades,” she said. “It will put Lehman even more in the spotlight.”

Construction will begin immediately and is expected to take about 18 months, said Bornstein, who noted that the theater will remain operational during the renovations.

“We are planning our shows as usual, and [the construction company] promised they will work around us,” she said.

Cruz said that Lehman College had hoped to upgrade the theater for years, but noted it was a major effort to raise the funds.

“Today, we’re happy that the funding has come through, the plans are in place, and we’re ready to construct,” he stated.

Funding for the project was provided by the office of the Governor, New York State Legislature, Bronx delegation of the New York City Council and the Office of the Bronx Borough President.

Díaz, an alumnus of Lehman College, said he felt a personal connection with the campus.

“As an institution, not only are you making sure our workforce is stronger, but you’ve also been a good neighbor,” he told Lehman officials at the groundbreaking ceremony. “You’ve done an effective job over the years of doing things outside of this campus, of promoting the Bronx outside of this campus. When you look at the arts, when you look at music and song and dance, that is the very part of the DNA of who we are as the Boogie Down Bronx.”

Milliken said that CUNY schools were known for connecting with the community.

“They offer service, they offer sport, they offer a connection between higher education and the community,” Milliken said. “This performing arts center, it’s going to be spectacularly beautiful and accommodate everyone.”

The groundbreaking ceremony marked the first public appearance for Milliken after he announced that he would step down as CUNY Chancellor at the end of the current academic year.

In a letter to CUNY colleagues published November 21, Milliken revealed that he was diagnosed with throat cancer last year and underwent months of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. He also referenced a shifting relationship with the CUNY Board of Trustees, as only two of the 17 trustees that appointed him remain on the board.

“It’s a combination of things,” Milliken remarked to The Bronx Free Press regarding his reasons for stepping down. Of his health issues, he said some challenges were ongoing.

“It changes your perspective a bit on your life and work,” he said.

When asked about his legacy at CUNY, Milliken said he was proud that the system graduated a record 52,000 students in 2016, had opened a new medical school, and that he was responsible for hiring 12 of the 24 CUNY school presidents.

“This has been the job of a lifetime for me,” he stated. “There are a lot of great things going on, but the most important single thing is what CUNY has always stood for over 170 years, and that’s offering opportunities to the people of New York.”

El Centro Lehman para las Artes Escénicas está a punto de someterse a un gran proyecto de ampliación y mejora.

Ubicada en el campus de Lehman College, la sala de conciertos con 2,310 asientos es el lugar más grande de su tipo en el Bronx.

El proyecto de $15.4 millones de dólares agregará casi 5,600 pies cuadrados de espacio para proporcionar una nueva taquilla, oficinas administrativas, instalaciones de baños y un elevador. La renovación también proporcionará nuevos sistemas de calefacción y aire acondicionado y hará que el edificio cumpla con la ADA, agregando áreas de visualización accesibles para sillas de ruedas dentro del teatro.

Eva Bornstein, directora ejecutiva del Centro Lehman para las Artes Escénicas, dijo que la instalación ofrece más de 100 espectáculos por año y también se alquila a organizaciones comunitarias para actuaciones especiales.

Díaz, ex alumno de Lehman College, dijo que siente una conexión personal con el campus.

La ceremonia de colocación de la primera piedra marcó la primera aparición pública de Milliken desde que anunció que dimitiría como canciller de CUNY al final del año académico en curso.

En una carta a colegas de CUNY publicada el 21 de noviembre, Milliken reveló que el año pasado le diagnosticaron cáncer de garganta y se sometió a meses de quimioterapia y radioterapia. También hizo referencia a una relación cambiante con la Junta de Fideicomisarios de CUNY, ya que solo dos de los 17 fideicomisarios que lo designaron permanecen en la junta.
