Going big in the borough

MetroPlus launches trio of community offices

It was a fruit-ful Friday.

A section of East 167^th Street in the Bronx came alive late last month.

Music filled the air, a singer crooned out familiar hits and children enjoyed face painting and balloon animals, and attendees sampled fresh fruit – including tamarind – from bins bursting with produce.

The scene might have resembled a block party, but the event’s purpose was something with a far more lasting effect on local residents.

The occasion on Fri., July 28^th was to mark the grand opening of MetroPlus Health Plan’s community office at 227A East 167^thStreet.

One of three new community offices the insurance provider is opening in the borough, the locations will educate locals about health insurance and also offer health screenings and a variety of social services.

Additional MetroPlus offices were also opened at 720 East Tremont Avenue and 1733 University Avenue.

These are the first offices opened in the Bronx by MetroPlus.

“It really represents our strong investment in the Bronx,” explained Chief Operating Officer Seth Diamond. “By being in the community, we feel we can serve people better. We can be here when they need us. They can come in, drop in, ask questions, and we can help provide them the information.”

Diamond noted that in light of the ongoing debate on the federal level on health coverage, these new sites offer a reliable and accessible resource.

“Health insurance can be very intimidating and scary, especially now. You’re not sure what’s true, what’s not true,” he noted. “MetroPlus has been around for 30 years. We’re going to be here; we’re going to continue to serve people.”

MetroPlus, a subsidiary of NYC Health + Hospitals, was founded in 1985.

“We thought it was important to bring services right to the community, so that it was more convenient,” said Roger Milliner, Deputy Executive Director.

Having the office also allows people to drop off important documents, rather than mail or fax them, Milliner said, and speak with representatives in person instead of calling.

The sites will be providing details on the agency’s Medicaid and Medicare programs, as well as specialized plans such as the Essential Plan, which covers all of the benefits offered on the New York State of Health.

“You might qualify to get healthcare for as little as $20 a month, or even for free,” said Victor Bell III, Associate Executive Director of Marketing for MetroPlus.

MetroPlus also offers specialized coverage plans for HIV patients, plans aimed at small businesses, and coverage for city employees.

“We have services to cover pretty much any employee or resident of New York City,” said Bell.

The centers will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Sunday.

“We’ll also do food stamps, WIC, social services, ESL classes, workshops and more,” added Milliner. “It also serves like a community office to do multiple services.”

The grand opening celebration for the Morrisania office was attended by State Senator Gustavo Rivera, City Councilmember Vanessa Gibson, and the royal court of the Bronx Puerto Rican Day Parade, who helped MetroPlus officials conduct a ribbon-cutting in front of the store.

Gibson, who has partnered with MetroPlus to host health and wellness fairs and back to school events, said the community offices would play an important role in the borough.

“We need these types of services,” she stated. “Obviously, in light of the climate we are living in with the possible repeal of Obamacare, we know that at a local level we need to do everything possible to give families an opportunity to access healthcare.”

Rivera expressed his gratitude to MetroPlus for investing in the Bronx.

“This isn’t something they need to do, it’s something they chose to do,” Rivera remarked. “I’m very grateful for that.”

“The fact that they have a physical space shows their commitment,” he said. “Having a space like this means people can come and be dealt with directly.”

Maria, a Morissania resident, stopped by the grand opening to find out about health insurance options.

“It’s nice to have a place to come sit down and talk to somebody face to face,” she said. “They explained everything to me.”

Phil Robles, Site Director of the East 167^th Street location, said the office had been open for about a month prior to the official grand opening. Robles said the site had been enrolling about 50 families per week in health coverage.

He said the community offices are designed to make it as easy as possible to connect Bronxites with health insurance.

“We’ll even come to your home and do an enrollment there,” he remarked.

It has become harder to provide healthcare to immigrant population since President Donald Trump, who has vowed to deport millions of immigrants, took office in January.

“With all the rhetoric from Washington, it’s causing immigrants to back off from going into hospitals and from enrolling in health services,” said Robles.

“All of us in healthcare saw a decline in enrollment or people following up because people were afraid,” added Milliner.

As he spoke, Rivera made note of the new fresh fruit and produce store located adjacent to the new MetroPlus office. While snacking on tamarind fruit he’d purchased at the store, Rivera remarked that those were the types of businesses the Bronx needs to see more of.

“These two things kind of go together,” he said. “Eating healthy and taking care of your medical health. These businesses can help change the health of the Bronx.”

Fue un viernes fructífero.

Una sección de la Calle 167 Este, en el Bronx, cobró vida el pasado viernes 28 de julio. La música llenó el aire, un cantante interpretó éxitos familiares y los niños disfrutaron de pintura de caras y animales de globo, y los residentes probaron frutas frescas -incluyendo tamarindo- de canastas llenas de productos.

La escena podría haber parecido una fiesta de la manzana, pero el propósito del evento fue algo que podría tener un efecto mucho más duradero en los residentes locales.

La ocasión fue para celebrar la inauguración de la oficina comunitaria de MetroPlus Health Plan en el No. 227A de la Calle 167 Este.

Una de las tres nuevas oficinas comunitarias que el proveedor de seguros está abriendo en el condado, las ubicaciones educarán a los locales sobre seguros médicos, y también ofrecerán revisiones de salud y una variedad de servicios sociales.

Se abrirán oficinas adicionales de MetroPlus en el No. 720 de la Avenida East Tremont y el No. 1733 de la Avenida University.

Estas son las primeras oficinas abiertas en el Bronx por MetroPlus.

“Realmente representa nuestra fuerte inversión en el Bronx”, explicó el jefe de operaciones Seth Diamond. “Al estar en la comunidad, sentimos que podemos servir a la gente mejor. Podemos estar aquí cuando nos necesiten. Ellos pueden entrar, presentarse, hacer preguntas y podemos ayudarles a proporcionarles la información”.

Diamond señaló que con el debate al nivel federal sobre cobertura de salud, estos nuevos sitios ofrecen un recurso fiable y accesible.

“Asuntos sobre el seguro pueden ser muy intimidantes, especialmente ahora. No se sabe lo que es verdad, lo que no es cierto”, señaló. “MetroPlus ha existido por 30 años. Vamos a estar aquí; vamos a seguir sirviendo a la gente”.

MetroPlus, una subsidiaria de NYC Health + Hospitals, fue fundada en 1985.

“Pensamos que era importante llevar los servicios directamente a la comunidad, para que fuese más conveniente y accesible”, dijo Roger Milliner, director ejecutivo adjunto de MetroPlus Health Plan.

Tener la oficina cerca también permite a la gente dejar documentos importantes, en lugar de enviarlos por correo o por fax, dijo Milliner, y hablar con los representantes en persona en lugar de llamar.

Los centros estarán abiertos de 9 a.m. a 7 p.m., de lunes a domingo.

“También hacemos cupones de alimentos, WIC, servicios sociales, clases de ESL, talleres y más”, agregó Milliner. “Sirve de igual manera como una oficina comunitaria para hacer múltiples servicios”.

A la celebración de la inauguración de la oficina de Morrisania se unieron el senador estatal Gustavo Rivera, la concejala Vanessa Gibson y la corte real del Desfile del Día de Puerto Rico en el Bronx, quienes ayudaron a los funcionarios deMetroPlus a cortar la cinta delante de la tienda.

Gibson, quien se ha asociado con las ferias de salud y bienestar de MetroPlus y los eventos de regreso a la escuela, dijo que las oficinas comunitarias jugarán un papel importante en el condado.

“Necesitamos este tipo de servicios”, afirmó. “Obviamente, a la luz del clima en el que vivimos con la posible revocación de Obamacare, sabemos que a nivel local debemos hacer todo lo posible para dar a las familias la oportunidad de acceder a la atención sanitaria”.

Rivera expresó su agradecimiento a MetroPlus por invertir en el Bronx.

“Esto no es algo que necesitan hacer, es algo que decidieron hacer”, comentó Rivera. “Estoy muy agradecido por eso”.

“El hecho de que tengan un espacio físico demuestra su compromiso”, dijo. “Tener un espacio como este significa que la gente puede venir y ser tratada directamente”.

María, residente de Morissania, pasó por la gran inauguración para enterarse de las opciones de seguro de salud.

“Es bueno tener un lugar dónde sentarse y hablar con alguien cara a cara”, dijo. “Me lo explicaron todo”.

Phil Robles, director del sitio de la Calle 167 Este, explicó que la oficina estuvo abierta durante un mes antes de la inauguración oficial y que el sitio ha estado inscribiendo a cerca de 50 familias por semana para cobertura de salud.

Dijo que las oficinas comunitarias están diseñadas para conectar a la gente del Bronx con los seguros de salud de la forma lo más fácil posible.

“Incluso iremos a su casa y lo inscribiremos ahí”, comentó.

“Toda la retórica de Washington está haciendo que los inmigrantes eviten ingresar a los hospitales e inscribirse para recibir servicios de salud”, dijo Robles.

“Todos en el cuidado de la salud hemos visto una disminución en el número de inscritos o en el seguimiento de la personas porque la gente tiene miedo”, agregó Milliner.

Mientras hablaba, Rivera destacó la nueva tienda de frutas y productos frescos ubicada junto a la nueva oficina de MetroPlus. Mientras comía algo de tamarindo comprado en la tienda, Rivera comentó que esos eran los tipos de negocios que el Bronx necesita ver más.
