Get Tough, Get BAAD!
The Bronx Academy of Art and Dance presents the “Get Tough, Get BAAD!” annual series of films and events celebrating queer power, diversity, defiance, strength and visibility. The series was initiated in 2010 to celebrate queer strength and value and to take a stand against violence and to counter negative and victimized images of queer people in the media from homophobic attacks in the Bronx and New York City. This year’s installment will present seven empowering narrative films that feature queer people of color, a youth open mic/jam, a community marathon screening of Orange is the New Black(Season 1) and culminate in a One Billion Rising dance with drumming and performance that takes a stand against violence toward women, transwomen and women-bodied people.

Thursday, February 5 at 7p.m./Free
MY STRAIGHT SON
Diego, a young and successful fashion photographer, lives in a glamorous world but a tragic accident turns his world upside down. Right at this inopportune time, Diego’s estranged and straight teenage son Armando shows up unexpectedly. Now, both of them have to adapt to each other in this touching and amusing dramedy. Directed Miguel Ferrari.

PARIAH and Youth Open Mic and Dance Contest
This event begins with the powerful coming out/coming-of-age film about a 17-year-old African-American woman quietly but firmly embracing her identity as a lesbian and living with her parents and younger sister in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood. She strives to love, be loved and get through adolescence with grace, humor, and tenacity. Directed by Dee Rees and executive produced by Spike Lee. Following the screening will be an open mic/open stage for youth and all to express themselves followed by a dance contest with a $50 cash prize.

ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK SEASON 1 MARATHON / Come Binge at BAAD!
Celebrate Laverne Cox, the first transgender person on the cover of Time Magazine who also performed at BAAD!, and who plays Sophia Burset on this hit Netflix television series about a successful thirtysomething woman (Piper Chapman) navigating jail life when she’s suddenly sentenced to prison for transporting drug money for her ex-girlfriend a decade earlier. Come binge on all 13 episodes of the first season screened on the hour beginning at 12 noon and going until 1am. Free popcorn, food for sale throughout the day (or bring food or order in), chill out on bean bags in your pajamas or sweats and/or take a break and play games in the BAAD! library.

THE HAPPY SAD
Rodney Evans (Brother to Brother) directs this witty, engaging and thoughtful look at two couples (one white and straight; the other black and gay) as they attempt to redefine their ideas of sexual identity and emotional fulfillment when an affair blooms between the guy in the white couple and one of the men in the black couple.

APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR
Director and screenwriter Desiree Akhavan caused a stir at Sundance with this comedy about a young woman (Akhavan) struggling to become a tall order of a trio: An ideal Persian daughter (Iranian), a politically correct bisexual, and a hip, young Brooklynite.

RAG TAG
Separated through circumstance, Black British gay boys Rag and Tag reunite years later as young men. Entrenched in their Jamaican and Nigerian values they have to work out what family and friendship means to them when they fall in love. Directed by Adaora Nwandu.

RISE UP AND DANCE: V-DAY ONE BILLION RISING
BAAD! joins up with One Billion Rising, a global event where ONE BILLION women, transwomen, and women-bodied people and those who love them will DANCE, RISE UP, and DEMAND an end to violence. BAAD!’s community “love-in” and dance begins at 7pm with a potluck dinner (bring a dish to share), followed by an open speak out against violence, a presentation of Eve Ensler’s “Rising” read by Michael Lynch, drumming and dancing led by Retumba’s Nancy Friedman and Yvette Martinez and then the music will be turned up and everyone will dance.

BAAD! is a performance and workshop space that presents cutting-edge works in dance and all creative disciplines empowering to women, people of color and the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community. BAAD! is home to Arthur Aviles Typical Theatre (AATT) and the Bronx Dance Coalition and was founded by Arthur Aviles and Charles Rice-Gonzalez in 1998 in Hunts Point. They moved to Westchester Square in October 2013 to a Gothic Revivalist building on the grounds of St. Peter’s Church.

La Academia de Arte y Danza del Bronx presenta la serie anual de películas y eventos “Get Tough, Get BAAD!” para celebrar el poder homosexual, la diversidad, el desafío, la fuerza y visibilidad. La serie se inició en 2010 para celebrar la fuerza y el valor homosexual, tomar una posición en contra de la violencia y para contrarrestar las imágenes negativas y victimizadas de los homosexuales en los medios de comunicación de los ataques homofóbicos en el Bronx y la ciudad de Nueva York. La entrega de este año presentará siete motivadoras películas narrativas que presentan a homosexuales de color, una sesión de micrófono abierto, una proyección maratónica comunitaria de Orange is the New Black (Temporada 1) y culminará con el baile One Billion Rising, con tambores y actuaciones que toman una postura en contra de la violencia hacia las mujeres, transexuales y personas con cuerpo de mujer.

Diego, un joven y exitoso fotógrafo de modas, vive en un mundo de glamour, pero un trágico accidente pone su mundo al revés. Justo en este momento inoportuno, Armando, el distanciado y heterosexual hijo adolescente de Diego, aparece inesperadamente. Ahora, ambos tienen que adaptarse el uno al otro en esta dramática, conmovedora y divertida comedia. Dirigida por Miguel Ferrari.

Este evento comienza con la poderosa película de una mujer afroamericana de 17 años que silenciosamente sale del clóset y cumple la mayoría de edad, pero abrazando firmemente su identidad como lesbiana y viviendo con sus padres y su hermana menor en el barrio Fort Greene de Brooklyn. Ella se esfuerza por amar, ser amada y superar la adolescencia, con gracia, humor y tenacidad. Dirigida por Dee Rees y con Spike Lee como productor ejecutivo. Tras la proyección habrá una sesión de micrófono/escenario abierto para que los jóvenes y todos se expresen, seguida de un concurso de baile con un premio en efectivo de $50 dólares.

Venga y atásquese con los 13 episodios de la primera temporada proyectados sobre las 12 del mediodía y hasta la 1:00 am. Rodney Evans (Brother to Brother) dirige esta mirada ingeniosa, atractiva y reflexiva sobre dos parejas (una blanca y heterosexual y la otra negra y homosexual) en su intento de redefinir sus ideas de la identidad sexual y la satisfacción emocional cuando nace un romance entre el chico de la pareja blanca y uno de los hombres de la pareja negra.

LEVÁNTESE Y BAILE: DÍA-V ONE BILLION RISING
BAAD! se une con One Billion Rising, un evento global donde MIL MILLONES de mujeres, transexuales, personas con cuerpo de mujer y las que las aman, BAILARÁN, SE LEVANTARÁN y DEMANDARÁN el fin a la violencia. El baile de la comunidad BAAD! empezará a las 7pm con una comida de lo que haya disponible (traiga un platillo para compartir), seguida de una denuncia abierta en contra de la violencia, una presentación de “Rising” de Eva Enlser, leída por Michael Lynch, tambores y danzas lideradas por Retumba de Nancy Friedman e Yvette Martínez y entonces la música sonará y todo el mundo bailará.

BAAD! es el hogar de Typical Theatre de Arthur Avilés (AATT por sus siglas en inglés) y la Coalición de Danza del Bronx, fundada por Arthur Avilés y Charles Rice-González en 1998 en Hunts Point. Se trasladaron a Westchester Square en octubre de 2013 a un edificio gótico evangelista en los terrenos de la iglesia St. Peter.
