Fourth is first
Last year’s fourth grade students at Christ the King Elementary School (CTK) can now add another line to their publishing credentials – International Literary Award Winners.
As announced this past Mon., Jul. 13th, the book authored by the students, De Donde Vengo Yo: (Where I’m From) Poems of Pride, a collection of the students’ original poetry, has won the “Best Book Written by a Youth” Award at the Latino Literacy Now International Latino Book Awards.
In spring 2014, the students joined with award-winning author Nancy Arroyo Ruffin to self-publish the students’ original poetry, which spoke of their pride in their heritage and ancestry.
“I wanted them to see their names and words in print and I wanted them to know that their words matter,” explained Ruffin. “You could see the light in their eyes and their faces beaming with pride as they anxiously opened the book each eager to see their names and their words in print.”
Detailing experiences that spoke of the beaches of Puerto Rico to the Great Wall of China, the students paid tribute to their families’ homelands.
“Pride is instilled,” said Ruffin. “It is what you carry with you every day of your life.”
“[This] was by far the most fulfilling thing I’ve ever done,” she added.
In celebration of the book’s publication, Ruffin, together with her sister and Where I’m From Foundation for the Arts (WIFFA) co-founder Diana Olmedo, also presented principal Tara Braswell with a donation for the school’s computer laboratory.
CTK is located at 1345 Grand Concourse in the borough and serves students from UPK through eighth grade.
These awards are the largest Latino cultural awards in the United States and were established over two decades ago to celebrate books published in English, Spanish and Portuguese representing the concerns, culture and lifestyles of Latino communities. Christ the King students were among the prestigious group of nominees spanning 246 finalists from 19 countries.

El cuarto fue el primero
Los estudiantes de cuarto grado del año anterior de la escuela primaria Christ the King (CTK) ahora pueden agregar otra línea a sus credenciales de publicación: Ganadores del Premio Internacional Literario.
Como se anunció el pasado lunes 13 de julio, el libro escrito por los estudiantes, De Donde Vengo Yo: (Where I’m From) Poems of Pride, una colección de poesía original de los estudiantes, ha ganado el Premio al “Mejor libro escrito por un joven” de los Premios Internacionales de Libros Latinos Literacy Now.
En la primavera de 2014 los estudiantes se unieron a la galardonada autora Nancy Arroyo Ruffin para auto publicar la poesía original de los estudiantes, que habla del orgullo por su herencia y ascendencia.
“Yo quería que vieran sus nombres y palabras impresas y que supieran que sus palabras importan”, explicó Ruffin. “Podías ver la luz en sus ojos y el rostro radiante de orgullo mientras abrían ansiosos el libro, deseoso de ver sus nombres y sus palabras impresas”.
Detallando experiencias sobre las playas de Puerto Rico hasta la Gran Muralla China, los estudiantes rindieron homenaje a los países de origen de sus familias.
“El orgullo se inculca”, dijo Ruffin. “Es lo que llevas contigo todos los días de tu vida”.
“Esto fue, por mucho, la cosa más gratificante que he hecho”, añadió.
En la celebración de la publicación del libro, Ruffin, junto con su hermana y Diana Olmedo, cofundadora de la Fundación para las Artes De Donde soy (WIFFA por sus siglas en inglés), dieron a la directora Tara Braswell una donación para un laboratorio de cómputo para la escuela.
CTK se encuentra en el No. 1345 de Grand Concourse, en el condado, y atiende a los estudiantes de UPK hasta el octavo grado.
Estos premios son los mayores premios culturales latinos en los Estados Unidos y se establecieron hace más de dos décadas para celebrar los libros publicados en inglés, español y portugués que representan las preocupaciones, la cultura y los estilos de vida de las comunidades latinas. Los estudiantes de Christ the King estuvieron entre el grupo prestigioso de nominados que abarcó 246 finalistas de 19 países.
