Funding boost for healthy food vouchers

It’s a triple win.
Dr. Jane Bedell, Assistant Commissioner of the Bronx Neighborhood Health Action Center, believes the bucks will reap benefits.
“This is a complete win-win-win,” said Bedell. “It’s a win for the residents here who have the Health Bucks, it’s a win for the neighborhood that gets a farmers market and it’s a win for our farmers upstate.”
The object of her praise was Health Bucks, which will be issued to Bronx residents after new funding was announced by City Councilmember Ritchie Torres.
Torres announced on Tuesday that he has allocated $28,000 for the paper vouchers, worth $2 each.
The vouchers are issued by the Health Department and can be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at the city’s GrowNYC Greenmarkets.
“Nowhere is the tale of two cities more apparent than when it comes to public health,” said Torres, noting the Bronx’s struggles with health outcomes. Comparing the borough with downtown Manhattan, he noted that 32 percent of Bronx residents deal with obesity compared to 4 percent of Financial District residents.
“Here in the Bronx, the problem is we have too many fast food restaurants and too few supermarkets that sell healthy produce,” said Torres, who visited the Poe Park Greenmarket to hand out Health Bucks coupons. “We have to change that. We have to shift the paradigm in the direction of healthy eating.”
The Health Bucks can be used at 140 farmer’s markets throughout the city, including 27 in the Bronx.
Liz Carollo, Assistant Director of GrowNYC’s Greenmarket Program, said each Greenmarket location in the city accepts SNAP to let people pay for fresh fruits and vegetables.
“It’s important that fresh also means affordable,” she said. “Federal programs like SNAP are increasingly being threatened, further impacting the vulnerability of our neighbors who lack access to fresh local food.”
People using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits get $2 in Health Bucks for every $5 spent with SNAP at farmer’s markets.
Bedell said the added value would hopefully inspire more New Yorkers to use their SNAP benefits for healthy food.
“Now, you can take those food stamps and buy Coca Cola, but you can’t do that with Health Bucks,” she said. “It will make people want to go to the farmer’s market.”
Torres said the $2 coupons were available at his district office.
“Ultimately, our health is not [only] about the choices we make, it’s about what we have access to,” remarked Torres. “You deserve access to healthier food. We have to save lives.”

Bedell dijo que el valor agregado podría inspirar a más neoyorquinos a usar sus beneficios SNAP para una alimentación saludable. “Ahora, puede tomar esos cupones de alimentos y comprar Coca Cola, pero no puede hacerlo con Health Bucks”, dijo. “Hará que la gente quiera ir al mercado de agricultores”.
Torres dijo que los cupones de $2 dólares están disponibles en la oficina de su distrito.
“En última instancia, nuestra salud no se trata [solo] de las elecciones que hacemos, sino de a qué tenemos acceso”, comentó Torres. “Ustedes merecen tener acceso a alimentos más saludables. Tenemos que salvar vidas”.
