Fiesta on Fordham

The Citibank branch on East Fordham Road and Creston Avenue is usually a quiet space where patrons and representatives speak in hushed tones.
But things were different – and livelier – this past Fri., May 5th.
On Friday, Fordham Road Business Improvement District (BID) launched its second Annual Fever Fridays with a Cinco De Mayo Fiesta and Festival at Muller Park and Pedestrian Plaza.
The event was sponsored by Affinity Health Plan, Verizon FiOS, and Citibank.
Passerby and revelers enjoyed live performances from the mariachi band Aguila y Plata, who played classic, rousing songs of loss and love just outside the branch.
Everyone is Mexican on the 5th of May—especially after a live rendition of Cielito Lindo. Also playing live was jazz saxophonist Tony Smith.
“This is a nice change,” said Richard González, the branch manager, of the celebratory music and activities.
Citibank sponsors many of the Fordham Road BID’s Fever Friday events.
“It’s for the customers, so they get to see things they don’t usually see on Fordham Road,” he said.
As part of the day-long celebration, there was also face-painting by Chussie the Clown, a Capoeira performance by ABADA Capoeira, and food tastings from the Montezuma and Mexicocina restaurants.
Be prepared for more Fever Fridays—the Fordham Road BID will host one every month until October. The festivities precede further changes to the commercial strip, which is the third largest BID in New York City, second only to Times Square and 34th Street, according to Wilma Alonso, the Executive Director of the Fordham Road BID.
The BID will be expanding to East Fordham Road and Third Avenue, and perhaps eventually extend as far west as Kingsbridge Road.
There is currently a $2.4 million park redevelopment project underway as well. “Fordham has changed in a good way,” said Alonso.

La sucursal de Citibank en East Fordham Road y avenida Creston es por lo general un espacio tranquilo donde los clientes y representantes hablan en voz baja.
Pero las cosas fueron diferentes -y más movidas- el pasado viernes 5 de mayo.
El viernes, Fordham Road Business Improvement District (BID) lanzó su segunda serie de viernes anuales de fiebre con la fiesta del Cinco De Mayo y el Festival de Muller Park y Pedestrian Plaza.
El evento fue patrocinado por Affinity Health Plan, Verizon FiOS y Citibank.
Los transeúntes y parranderos disfrutaron de presentaciones en vivo de la banda de mariachi Águila y Plata, que interpretó canciones clásicas y conmovedoras sobre la pérdida y el amor justo afuera de la sucursal.
Todo el mundo es mexicano el 5 de mayo y sobre todo después de una interpretación en vivo de Cielito Lindo.
También tocó en vivo el saxofonista de jazz Tony Smith.
“Este es un buen cambio”, dijo Richard González, gerente de la sucursal, sobre la música y las actividades de celebración.
Citibank patrocina muchos de los eventos de viernes de fiebre del BID de Fordham Road.
“Es para los clientes, para que puedan ver cosas que no suelen ver en Fordham Road”, dijo.
Como parte de la jornada de celebración, también hubo pintura de caras de Chussie el Payaso, un espectáculo de Capoeira por ABADA Capoeira y degustaciones de comida de los restaurantes Montezuma y Mexicocina.
Esté preparado para más viernes de fiebre. El BID de Fordham Road será sede un viernes de cada mes hasta octubre. Las festividades preceden nuevos cambios en la zona comercial, que es el tercer más grande BID en la ciudad de Nueva York, en segundo lugar solamente después de Times Square y la calle 34. Esto de acuerdo con Wilma Alonso, la directora ejecutiva del BID de Fordham Road.
El BID se ampliará a East Fordham Road y la Tercera Avenida, y tal vez con el tiempo se extienda hacia el oeste hasta Kingsbridge Road.
En la actualidad, 2.4 millones de dólares del proyecto de reurbanización del parque se han puesto en marcha también.
“Fordham ha cambiado en el buen sentido”, dijo Alonso.
