The Bronx was blooming. Fresh off her winning bid for a vice chair role with the Democratic National Committee (DNC), U.S. Congresswoman Grace Meng visited the Bronx to honor fellow female leaders for outstanding achievement. Meng, who represents Queens, served as the host of Rep. Joe Crowley’s annual Women’s History Month celebration, held at the New York Botanical Garden on March 6. The Congresswoman presented awards to Camille Mackler, Director of Legal Initiatives for the New York Immigration Coalition, as well as Teresita Rodríguez and Gertrudes Pajaron of Apicha Community Health Center, for their work serving the community. Pajaron said the Manhattan-based Apicha provides health services to at-risk populations such as the LBGTQ community and those living with HIV/AIDS. “We believe healthcare is a human right,” she said while accepting her award. “That’s why we bring services to those who are most vulnerable.” Meng stressed that the current political climate made it essential for Democratic lawmakers to protect vulnerable Americans. “If we are not there for people, we are not sure that this government, as it exists today, will be there for people,” stated Meng. “It becomes crucial that we reassure people that we are fighting every single day for the policies, legislation and values that you worked so hard on all through your lives.” Mackler, whose immigrant advocacy group has helped spearhead a slew of rallies and protests surrounding the executive orders of Donald Trump, suggested that the White House has created an atmosphere of distress for immigrant communities. “I’ve never seen this kind of hatred come out of our government before,” said Mackler. “There are a lot of things that are very frightening right now.” “But we can’t lose hope,” she remarked. “If we lose hope, we lose everything.” Mackler said that many Americans have been spurred into action by the Trump administration’s policies and are uniting for a cause. “We’ve also never seen this much power, this much vocalization of anger, or the decision to take action with people coming into the streets. We’re coming together in ways I’ve never seen,” she said. “I drove out to JFK airport on the first morning of the travel ban to see what was going on, and the next thing I know there’s 5,000 people there, chanting “No ban, no wall,” she continued. “That galvanized action is powerful to see.” On February 24, Meng won her race to retain the DNC Vice Chair slot she had held since the conclusion of the DNC convention in July, following the resignation of Rep. Tulsi Gabbard earlier this year. Bronx Assemblymember Michael Blake was voted as the other DNC Vice Chair, while Tom Pérez was named Chairman. The DNC’s only Asian officer, Meng said she intended to work closely with immigrant communities and millennials, but also with Americans living outside of urban areas. Meng suggested that Democrats had lost touch with many rural voters, a circumstance she said needed to change in order to move the party forward. “There are many parts of this country where the Democrats need to strengthen our presence and make sure that we are having conversations with folks in red states and rural areas,” Meng told Bronx Free Press. “During my campaign, that became very transparent to me.” Meng said she’ll also advocate for more transparency within the party. “During the DNC, a lot of the members felt underutilized, they also felt like they weren’t really sure how the money was being spent,” Meng said. “Money spent on organizing is more important than ever, so I hope to make that happen.” Meng explained that she was working on national legislation to make feminine hygiene products more readily available to women, pointing out the work New York City legislators have done to make the products accessible in public schools and shelters. Referencing the challenges of women in the workplace, Meng said she intends to spearhead efforts to improve corporate diversity throughout the U.S., to increase the number of women in upper management of large corporations. “We need to hold companies accountable — that doesn’t necessarily mean pointing fingers and shaming them, but we need to hold them accountable by spotlighting the good players and make sure that companies can learn from these good players about how they need to be intentional about hiring and diversity.”
