Familia is now First. The decision to posthumously promote the fallen New York Police Department (NYPD) Officer Miosotis Patricia Familia to Detective, First Grade, was announced by Police Commissioner James O’Neill during the funeral service held on Tues., July 11th. “I couldn’t be more proud of and thankful for Miosotis, whom I promote today to Detective First Grade,” said O’Neill to thunderous applause and a standing ovation at the World Changers Church on the Grand Concourse near 187th Street. He then addressed Familia’s three children – 20-year-old Genesis and 12-year-old twins Delilah and Peter – directly. “To Genny, Peter, and Delilah, here we are today literally surrounded by a sea of blue as far as the eye can see outside this building, and know this – our family will always be with yours,” he said. “We don’t ever forget, we will always be here for you in this city.” Familia was the youngest of ten siblings, and the daughter of an immigrant family from the Dominican Republic. Thousands of police officers from New York City and around the world filled the Concourse to honor Familia, who served in the 46th Precinct and was assassinated inside her police vehicle on 183rd Street in Fordham Heights in the early morning of July 5. The normally busy thoroughfare was completely shut down in front of the church as a sea of blue police uniforms stretched for several blocks, with cops joined by many local residents who also came to pay respects to Familia. The officer was shot in the head while sitting in her mobile command unit and died shortly thereafter. This followed days of activity for the grieving clan of family, friends and NYPD colleagues, including a candlelight vigil held this past Saturday at the 46th Precinct, visits to Familia’s Kingsbridge home, and a wake on Monday afternoon. Inside the funeral, Mayor Bill de Blasio praised the 48-year-old Familia for her service. “Our hearts are broken,” de Blasio said. “But at the same time, we’re here to appreciate. We’re here to lay a hero to rest. But we have to remember the many ways she was a hero ― in her service to this city, in her love for her family, and all she did for everyone she came across in life.” Familia was remembered for an unfailing drive and desire to serve – she was the first in her family to attend and graduate from college; she had been a patient care assistant and American Red Cross Worker before joining the force; and she pushed her children to pursue their own academic goals with zeal. O’Neill, who seemed near tears on several occasions, vowed to them that “your mom didn’t die in vain.” “Your mom’s legacy will never fade from the importance of memory,” he said. “Your mom made it her mission to make your home, New York City, a better and safe place for everyone and I vow to you we will continue to find our way forward in her honor.” Daughter Genesis said that the funeral occurred on the 12th anniversary of her mother officially joining the NYPD. “When I was a little kid, I was just so proud and so excited my mom was a cop,” she stated. “I still am so proud of her.” She said she would miss her mother’s hugs, “sparkling eyes” and her “beautiful curly hair, like mine.” “I love you so much, Mom,” she cried. “I love you so much.” Son Peter, who was also called Jacob by his mother, urged attendees to be “grateful” for those around them, prompting embraces throughout the aisles. Familia’s mother Adriana Valoy, 86 years old, who lived with the twins and their mother, spoke only briefly through tears. “Thank you,” she said. “Que Dios me los bendiga a todos [May God bless you all].” Numerous speakers reminded family members that they were part of a far more extended constellation now – “a family of blood and a family of blue.” The gunman who shot Familia was identified as Alexander Bonds, 34. After shooting Familia, Bonds was chased down by other NYPD officers a block away from the incident. The officers shot and killed him after he pulled a revolver. O’Neill condemned violence against NYPD officers, as seven cops have been killed in the past five years. “This amazing woman, this mother, this daughter, this sister, this friend, this New York City police officer was assassinated solely because of what she represented and for the responsibility she embraced,” stated O’Neill. “All her killer could see was a uniform, even though Miosotis was so much more.” Following the funeral service, family members traveled with police escort to Woodlawn Cemetery, where she was interred. En route, along the Concourse, onto Burnside Avenue, and throughout the Major Deegan Expressway, uniformed officers stood at attention and saluted. Beside them stood residents of all ages, who also paused to acknowledge the somber caravan. Some wept openly. “It’s a shame, shocking, what happened to that officer,” said Allie, who lives on Morris Avenue. “It’s a sick world when someone walks up to an officer and does that.” “It was a beautiful ceremony,” added one woman who attended the funeral, who declined to give her name. “It was very moving.” At a repast held later in the afternoon at Bronx Community College, which hosted the intimate luncheon for family and officers, many who spoke had served with Familia and explained why they had nicknamed her “La Loca” (“The Crazy One”). “She was always smiling, she was always joking,” said one officer of Familia’s exuberance. “She made everything better.” Others made note of how, even in death, Familia’s reach had extended a little farther – and that one more ambition had been realized. “She always wanted to be detective,” shared her mother. “She always wanted that.” An online campaign has been launched by the Tunnel 2 Towers Foundation to raise money for the family of Miosotis Familia.
