Resistencia falsa y los demócratas

It’s that symbiotic, mutually beneficial relationship between Trump and the media, and by extension Trump and Democrats, that has come to define the political climate of 2017 thus far. Trump attacks immigrants; immigrant rallies are held with Democrats jumping to the front. Trump attacks the media; pro-media rallies are launched by the steady hand of Democrats. The media rally over the weekend was organized by “Get Organized BK,” an anti-Trump group just created by Democratic Councilmember Brad Lander of Brooklyn. Obviously Democrats, at every level, think they have the most to gain in the Trump era. However, as they attempt to rebrand themselves as the party of “resistance,” they’ve also laid the groundwork for more discontent among their own ranks. For as stinging as Hillary Clinton’s defeat was to the party, establishment Democrats have hardly looked into the mirror to reflect. Lining up behind a candidate who once referred to black men as “super predators” and who couldn’t explain NAFTA was not only a mistake, but an incredible sign of arrogance. As Clinton’s campaign hinged on Trump’s apparent missteps, the role of working class champion was ceded to a billionaire developer. Democrats are continuing down this road, choosing to focus on Trump’s bad behavior rather than engaging the issues: poverty, jobs and even globalization. More arrogance. Trump is correct to note that the Times and other media outlets are elite and out of touch. His populist pandering obviously hit a chord last November and will continue to do so if his opponents choose to rally around powerful news organizations instead of regular people. Still, Democrats eager to show they are part of this “resistance” can’t pull themselves away from the Trump piñata. In the short term, they have much to gain. What the mayor doesn’t understand is that in the long term, New Yorkers aren’t stupid. His post-inauguration speech alongside celebrities to a mostly white crowd in Manhattan last month stands in stark contrast to a march this month by immigration activists protesting the aggressive policing of immigrants by de Blasio’s (not Trump’s) NYPD. That demonstration ended in the violent arrests of activists. That hypocrisy and double standard won’t easily be forgotten. Young and idealistic voices within the Democratic Party may take notice. A generation whose political views have been at least partly shaped by the last few years of protests, including the unresolved question of whether black lives matter, likely don’t want a return to politics as usual. But that’s all the Democrats have to offer them once the phony “resistance” phase of the Trump era has passed. It’s time to leave them behind. Es esa relación simbiótica y mutuamente benéfica entre Trump y los medios de comunicación, y por extensión entre Trump y los demócratas, que ha llegado a definir el clima político de 2017 hasta ahora. Trump ataca a los inmigrantes, se realizan manifestaciones de inmigrantes con los demócratas saltando a la vanguardia. Trump ataca a los medios de comunicación, manifestaciones en favor de los medios de comunicación son organizadas por la mano firme de los demócratas. La manifestación mediática del fin de semana fue organizada por “Get Organized BK”, un grupo anti-Trump recién creado por el concejal demócrata Brad Lander, de Brooklyn. Obviamente, los demócratas, en todos los niveles, piensan que tienen más que ganar en la era Trump. Su mimo populista obviamente golpeó un acorde en noviembre pasado y continuará haciéndolo si sus oponentes optan por reunirse alrededor de poderosas organizaciones de noticias en lugar de gente común. Aun así, los demócratas están deseosos de demostrar que son parte de esta “resistencia” y no pueden alejarse de la piñata Trump. En el corto plazo, tienen mucho que ganar. Tomen al alcalde Bill de Blasio, actualmente bajo investigación federal y desviando las críticas de la policía y los activistas de la vivienda. Puede reinventarse como Bill de Blasio, manifestante anti-Trump. Cada truco de Trump o controversia es un regalo para un alcalde metido hasta el cuello en donaciones cuestionables de, irónicamente, desarrolladores de bienes raíces. Lo que el alcalde no entiende es que a largo plazo, los neoyorquinos no son estúpidos. Su discurso posterior a la toma de posesión junto a celebridades, dirigido a una multitud mayoritariamente blanca en Manhattan el mes pasado, contrasta con una marcha este mes de activistas inmigrantes protestando por los agresivos patrullajes hacia ellos del NYPD de De Blasio (no de Trump). Esa manifestación terminó con violentos arrestos de activistas. Las voces jóvenes e idealistas dentro del Partido Demócrata pueden tomar nota. Una generación cuyas opiniones políticas han sido al menos en parte moldeadas por los últimos años de protestas, incluida la cuestión no resuelta de si las vidas negras son importantes, probablemente no quieren volver a la misma política de siempre. Pero eso es todo lo que los demócratas tienen para ofrecer una vez que la falsa fase de “resistencia” de la era Trump haya pasado. ¿Qué mejor ejemplo que el gobernador de Nueva York, Andrew Cuomo, otra figura de la clase dirigente con lazos familiares en el partido, como un rumorado candidato presidencial en 2020? La política está en un estado de turbulencia y los demócratas no han aprendido una maldita cosa. Es hora de dejarlos atrás. Fake Resistance and the Democrats
Over the weekend, demonstrators rallied in front the of the New York Times building and other media offices to show support for a free press in the aftermath of President Donald Trump’s decision to limit the access of certain news organizations. The latest in a line of Trump-inspired protests so far this year, the demonstration did have its silver lining: Times Executive Editor Dean Baquet pointed out that Trump’s behavior has actually driven the number of subscriptions to the paper up.
Take Mayor Bill de Blasio, currently under federal investigation and deflecting criticism from policing and housing activists. He can reinvent himself as Bill de Blasio, anti-Trump protester. Every Trump tweet or controversy is gift to a mayor neck-deep in questionable donations from, ironically, real estate developers.
What better example than New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, another establishment figure with family ties to the party, as a rumored presidential candidate in 2020?

Durante el fin de semana, manifestantes se reunieron frente al edificio del New York Times y otras oficinas de medios de comunicación para mostrar apoyo a una prensa libre después de la decisión del presidente Donald Trump de limitar el acceso a ciertas organizaciones de noticias. La manifestación más reciente en una línea de protestas inspiradas por Trump este año, tuvo su atractivo: el editor ejecutivo del Times, Dean Baquet, señaló que el comportamiento de Trump ha impulsado el número de suscripciones al periódico.
No será fácil olvidar esa la hipocresía y el doble estándar.
