Tune in for straight talk. Voters will now have the opportunity to hear straight from the candidates running for City Council. BronxNet’s BronxTalk Host Gary Axelbank will moderate three debates produced in partnership with the League of Women Voters, the bilingual community newspaper The Bronx Free Press, and The Bronx Times Reporter. Each debate will be taped in the BronxNet studio at Lehman College at 3:00 p.m. on consecutive dates, and broadcast as special BronxTalk episodes on Monday 8/14, 8/21 and 8/28 at 9:00 p.m. on BronxNet channels 67-Optimum and 37-Fios. Councilmember James Vacca is vacating the seat in District 13, and Councilmember Annabel Palma is vacating the seat in District 18. John C. Doyle, Mark Gjonaj, Alex A. Gómez, Víctor R. Ortiz, Egidio Sementilli and Marjorie Velázquez are expected to participate in the District 13 debate, which will take place on 8/14. District 18 candidates include Michael Beltzer, Senator Rubén Díaz, Sr., Amanda C. Farías, Elvin García and William Russell Moore, with the debate scheduled for 8/21on BronxTalk on BronxNet. For District 14, candidates Randy D. Abreu and Félix A. Candidates for two open council seats will convey why they believe they should fill seats available as a result of term limits reached by two long-time Bronx representatives.
Viewers should also look for in-depth interviews with candidates of various districts, coming up on BronxNet’s talk show In the District in the weeks leading up to the primaries. Beginning Monday 8/14, there will be interviews with candidates from District 13 at 8:00 p.m. on In the District, followed by the District 13 debate at 9:00 p.m. on BronxTalk.
