Nuyorican comedian draws deep and makes his mark

Don’t call it (just) a comeback.

When Rafael “Gee” Gracia takes center stage later this month, the comic will be offering more than an evening of entertainment.

While his stories promise plenty of laughs, the Nuyorican will also provide an unsparing look at how he has reinvented himself and persevered by drawing deeply from his resilience, his family and his cultural identity.

It is a “Rican-struction,” explained Gracia, who uses “Gee” as his stage surname.

“I named it that because of everything I’ve been through in my life,” he said. “I’m still on the same foundation that I was made, you understand what I’m saying? I never forgot my roots. I never forgot how or where I came from.”

“I lived my life, but I went through a lot.”

Born on the Lower East Side, raised in Brooklyn, Gracia said he encountered early struggles with homelessness, depression, and substance abuse.

There were even a couple of near-death experiences.

The father of four said it became clear that openly sharing his experiences, including the painful moments, was essential in coping and moving forward.

“Comedy is the cheapest psychiatrist in the world,” he shared. “In the great words of Bernie Mac, when they asked him, ‘Where does your comedy come from?’ He said pain. I related to that, because I talk about getting high or getting beat up by my parents because I did something bad.”

Stand-up is his story-telling medium, explained Gracia. Rather than merely delivering jokes, he has committed to crafting an authentic narrative culled from experiences that reflect setback and success, as lived over and over again.

Grief, he has learned, can be repurposed as the basis for renewal.

“Losing my dad, who was a big inspiration to me, I just started rebuilding. I had to fix my life by getting healthy again.  And then I met my wife three years ago,” said Gracia. “I started getting booked more and more and more.”

Set in the Comedy in Harlem comedy club, Gracia’s October 18 performance caps off a quarter-century of stand-up work, hustling from stage to stage across the country. He is a familiar face on the local circuit, having honed his deeply personal and poignant sets before live audiences at the Broadway Comedy Club and Stand Up NY, among other clubs.

This will be his first-ever one-man comedy special – and it has been sold out for months, much to the delight of club co-owners Jamie Roberts and Nicky Sunshine.

“Rafael is a really dynamic performer. First and foremost, he has a great connection with the audience,” said Sunshine. “He’s very relatable. It’s like, ‘This is a guy I know. This is a guy that lives in my building. This is my Tío.’ And he’s very transparent with his personal stories, with his life, about his struggle to overcome addiction. Rafael has a way of spinning his stories that could be looked at as negative, and he makes them hilarious.”

Roberts agreed it was only fitting that Gee find himself in the spotlight at this point in his career.

“It’s about time for him to shine on his own,” he said. “He’s been featured for many headliners around the city. Every now and then you got to step out on faith and see if you got it in you to do it yourself. That’s the leveling up, [to] actually step into the limelight to see if they got it. And he’s got it.”

Those natural abilities have been on display in another arena. Before he was “Gee,” Gracia took to the stage as “El Charro Boricua Jr.,” as a professional in the independent circuit, for the Bronx Wrestling Federation (BWF), American Championship Entertainment (ACE), Legendary Action Wrestling (LAW), and Alpha Championship Wrestling (ACW).

“Yo, let me tell you, that was no joke. I took my lumps and bumps,” shared Gracia. “I have the utmost respect for all professional wrestlers doing their thing at the highest level. They’re doing their thing every day, year-round. I salute and commend them. When I was doing it, it definitely wasn’t for the money. I was getting about $75 a match. I did it as a tribute to my father, who wrestled professionally part time, under the name El Charro Boricua.”

Gracia’s father shows up consistently in the performer’s comedy work, including as the alter ego “Juan Sánchez.”

Think, he offered, the “Puerto Rican Archie Bunker.”

It is a character that José “Savage” García is very much looking forward to seeing live. García, who discovered the comedian on Tik Tok, will be traveling from Westchester to Harlem for his birthday celebration to see Gracia in action.

“It’s just the accent, as an old-fashioned Puerto Rican,” enthused Garcia of the “Juan Sánchez” personality. “The way [Gracia] changes up characters, [that’s] what makes it great. He has a lot of different skits.”

His favorite? “The one [where] he plays a newscaster.”

Opener Eric Nieves is a fan too. Over 25 years ago, he and Gracia met, unsurprisingly, at a comedy club and have remained friends since.

“I feel like he’s been building towards this moment his entire career,” said Nieves. “I’m expecting a comedic explosion. I can’t wait for the world to get to know Rafael Gee. The Rican-struction has begun.”

Club owner Roberts said Gracia’s observational humor resonates with audiences who clamor for genuine dialogue.

“He’s true to the game and he’s funny,” Roberts said. “Which is hard to do these days because so many people are so conscious and so scared to touch on certain topics. But he pushes the envelope and then gets the laughs that he needs. A lot of comedy you see, a lot of specials nowadays are just cookie cutter. You’re not going to get that with this.”

According to manager Domingo Padilla, Gracia has already met with an agent in Hollywood, and is presently auditioning for television and movie roles.

“Rafael’s growth is amazing to watch as he gets booked more and more throughout the country,” enthused Padilla. “As a man Rafael has always been a standup honorable person with morals, so his comedy life intertwines perfectly with his regular life.”

As his profile grows, Gracia’s cadre of supporters note that he has never strayed far from home and that beyond “keeping it real,” he has kept it humble.

“He could have taken [the show] anywhere,” noted club owner Sunshine. “But we really thought it was special that he brought it to us, to our venue.

“In the landscape of Latino comedy in New York, there are a lot of different performers, but I feel like he’s a rising star,” she said. “When people see him perform, they’re going to be like, ‘Wow, where’s this guy been?’”

Me llevé muchos golpes y moretones”, compartió Gracia.
