The Blue Glove Boogie for new Urban Health Plan clinic

Forget the Harlem Shake.

The newest dance craze is the Blue Glove Boogie.

And it’s already come to a local health clinic near you – with more demonstrations sure to follow.

The Blue Glove Boogie fans strap on blue latex gloves, and raise their arms high.

Once everyone is ready, they swing their arms to and fro, like the upturned pendulums of a grandfather clock.

This past Fri., Feb. 15^th, the Boogie took place at the St. Lawrence Community Health Center on 1764 Westchester Avenue during the site’s official ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Also at the ceremony were Sam Shutman, Vice President of Managed Care and Business Engagement at Bronx Lebanon Hospital; Don Ashkenase, Special Advisor to the President at Montefiore Medical Center; and representatives from the Offices of Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr. and Congressman José Serrano.

The St. Lawrence Community Health Center is a new addition the network of Urban Health Plan Inc., which has provided over 40 years of health care service to the South Bronx.

Since opening its doors in December, the St. Lawrence Community Health Center has already had 900 patient visits.

Its staff has even won the organization’s “Stanley Cup,” a trophy that goes to the network’s health clinic with the best customer service ratings.

There are nine full-time health clinics in the Urban Health Plan Inc. system.

On hand for the celebration was Dr. Richard Izquierdo, Urban Health Plan’s founder, who expressed his happiness on the growth of what he had first imagined.

“I look back on this dream—it was a tiny little dream—and it’s gone beyond my wildest expectations,” he said, before stopping to look at all the guests gathered that day.

The morning’s festivities turned the clinic’s waiting room into a jolly party scene.

“My God!” he exclaimed at the crowd. “When do we stop growing?”

Not any time soon, if recent events are any indication; just two weeks prior Urban Health Plan Inc. opened an Adolescent Care Center.

Overseeing the Plan’s responsive expansion is Paloma Izquierdo-Hernández, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Urban Health Plan, Inc.

She, in turn, was quick to credit Urban Health Plan’s team and staff members.

“Beneath all this,” she said, referring to the celebration’s festivities, “are hard working people. For us to be here is a no-brainer.”

She congratulated the staff of the St. Lawrence Clinic for winning the trophy so soon after opening.

Yalitza Johnson, administrator at the center, was particularly ecstatic.

“It’s an honor to receive this distinction just two months after our opening,” she said.

Denise Sánchez, a nurse at the clinic, attributed the positive reviews that patients and clients had given the clinic to its filling a need within the community.

“We’re providing a needed service in an area that’s growing,” she observed.

And about the dancing?

The Blue Glove Boogie, in fact, serves a specific purpose.

During National Health Clinic week in August, Urban Health Plan will release a compilation video of all the Blue Glove dances performed at their clinic openings.

Though it was Sánchez’s first time doing the Blue Glove Boogie, she handled it like a pro: “It was fun!”

And when not doing the dance, the hands were still kept busy.

Throughout the morning, many of the staff members made sure to stop by and reach out to touch the trophy, marveling at the award.

Harder to accept was the fact that it will be taken away at the end of the month and given to the next victor.

“When I take it away, all the employees tell me ‘It’s coming back here!,’” said Izquierdo-Hernández, who does the passing on of the trophy herself.

But the St. Lawrence team said they would cherish it as long as it’s with them.

Lwelin García, a Patient Service Representative, was thrilled.

“I’m super excited. Since I started working here I wanted to get the cup,” he said. “It’s exciting to know that when you work hard, it pays off.”

And Urban Health Plan’s founder agreed.

Having joined in a vigorous bit of dancing, and after finding a seat, Dr. Izquierdo observed, “Every clinic opening is a celebration.”

El nuevo baile es el ‘Blue Glove Boogie’.

Y ya llegó a una clínica de salud local cerca de usted – con seguro más demostraciones a seguir.

Los fanáticos del ‘The Blue Glove Boogie’ se ponen guantes de goma azules, y elevan los brazos. Una vez todo el mundo está listo, mueven los brazos hacia delante y hacia atrás, como si fueran un péndulo de reloj.

Este pasado viernes, 15 de febrero, el ‘Boogie’ se llevó a cabo en el Centro de Salud Comunal St. Lawrence en el 1764 de la Avenida Westchester durante la ceremonia oficial de inauguración del lugar. También en la inauguración se encontraban Sam Shutman, vicepresidente de Manejo de Cuidado y Compromiso Comercial del Hospital Bronx Lebanon; Don Ashkenase, Asesor Especial del presidente del Centro Médico Montefiore; y representantes de las oficinas del presidente del condado del Bronx Rubén Díaz Jr. y el Congresista José Serrano.

El Centro de Salud Comunal St. Lawrence es una nueva adición a la red de trabajo del ‘Urban Health Plan, Inc.’, que ha proporcionado más de 30 años de servicios de cuidado de salud al Sur del Bronx. Desde que abrió sus puertas en diciembre, el Centro de Salud Comunal St. Lawrence ya ha tenido 900 visitas de pacientes.

“Miro hacia atrás en este sueño – era un diminuto pequeño sueño – y ha ido mucho más lejos de mis expectativas”, dijo el, antes de detenerse a mirar todos los invitados reunidos ese día.

Las festividades de la mañana convirtió la sala de espera de la clínica en una fiesta.

“Mi Dios”, exclamó a la multitud. “¿Cuándo vamos a parar de crecer?”

No dentro de poco, si los recientes eventos son alguna indicación; justo dos semanas antes de que ‘Urban Health Plan, Inc. abriera un Centro de Cuidado para Adolescentes.

Supervisando la expansión del Plan está Paloma Izquierdo-Hernández, directora ejecutiva de ‘Urban Health Plan, Inc.’ Ella a la vez fue rápida en acreditarlo al equipo y empleados de ‘Urban Health Plan, Inc.’.

“Detrás de nuestro triunfo”, dijo ella refiriéndose a las celebraciones, “hay personas trabajadoras. Para nosotros estar aquí no es cosa fácil”.

Ella felicitó a los empleados de la Clínica St. Lawrence por ganarse el trofeo tan pronto el centro abriera sus puertas.

“Es un honor recibir esta distinción solo dos meses después de nuestra apertura”, dijo ella. Denise Sánchez, una enfermera en la clínica, atribuyó el triunfo a las opiniones positivas que los pacientes y clientes habían dado a la clínica de que está llenando una necesidad dentro de la comunidad.

“Estamos suministrando un necesitado servicio en un área que está creciendo”, observó ella.

¿Y acerca del baile?

De hecho ‘The Blue Glove Boogie’, sirve a un propósito específico.

Durante la semana de Clínica de Salud Nacional en agosto, ‘Urban Health Plan’ presentará un video de todos los bailes ‘Blue Glove’ presentados en las aperturas de sus clínicas.

Aunque era la primera vez que Sánchez hacia el ‘Blue Glove Boogie’, lo manejó como un profesional: ¡Fue divertido!

Y cuando no está haciendo el baile, las manos todavía se seguían manteniendo ocupadas.

A través de la mañana, muchos de los empleados se aseguraron de parar y llegar para alcanzar el trofeo, maravillándose del premio.

Más difícil que aceptar el premio fue el hecho de que se lo llevarán a fin de mes y se lo darán al próximo vencedor.

“Cuando me lo llevo, todos los empleados me dicen ‘va a regresar de vuelta aquí’”, dijo Izquierdo-Hernández, quien pasa el trofeo.

Pero el equipo de St. Lawrence dijo que lo apreciarán por el tiempo que este con ellos.

De hecho, Lwelin García, representante de servicio al paciente, parecía no poder parar de tocarlo.  “Desde que comencé a trabajar aquí deseaba ganarme la taza”, dijo. “Es emocionante saber que cuando trabajas duro, vale la pena”.

Un fundador de ‘Urban Health Plan’ estuvo de acuerdo.

Habiéndose unido en un vigoroso baile, y luego de encontrar un asiento, el Dr. Izquierdo observó, “cada apertura de una clínica es una celebración”.
