Cultivating Cultural Attachés
They’ll take Thursdays.
The Teen Thursdays program, an afterschool initiative that allows middle-school students to take advantage of the learning opportunities available at citywide cultural institutions, will be expanded.
Launched in the 2013-4 school year, the program began with five schools.
As announced this past Thurs., May 21st by Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña, now 30 schools will participate in the fall and up to 30 different middle schools will participate in the spring.
Participating schools across all five boroughs partner with a local cultural institution to offer students hands-on learning experiences. Principals identify 15-20 students from their 7th– or 8th-grade classes to participate, and the selected students attend afterschool sessions at their partner institution every Thursday for seven weeks. Each cultural institution has an educator who works with the school to develop a historical theme for the sessions that aligns with the skills students are developing in their daily schoolwork.
“Teen Thursdays is a great reminder for our middle-schoolers – no matter their zip code or family background – that our city’s amazing museums, galleries, concert halls, and theatres are spaces for them to take advantage of and benefit from,” said Fariña. “Cultural institutions offer our students a chance to enrich and deepen their classroom experiences. Teen Thursdays will encourage students and their families to visit these institutions, and remind them that learning isn’t limited to the classroom.”
The announcement was made during a visit made by students of Northern Manhattan’s PS/IS 7, Samuel Stern, to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
“I have seen firsthand how immersing students in the wonders of museums enriches their academic experiences and helps develop their social-emotional skills,” said Sameer Talati, principal of PS/IS 7, Samuel Stern.
“Participation in Teen Thursdays is crucial in our efforts to help teens access the Met on their own terms, connect art to their lives, and develop their own points of view,” said Sandra Jackson-Dumont, the Frederick P. and Sandra P. Rose Chairman of Education at the Metropolitan Museum. “Young people vote with their feet, so we knew the program was having an impact when the students who participated in the fall asked to come back. When young people self-select cultural activities like this one, it’s a sign that they find it meaningful and important.”
The DOE is currently accepting applications for the 2015-2016 school year. Interested schools can apply online through May 31. Schools must commit to participating for the full course of the program, selecting a consistent group of students and a collaborating team of teachers. A complete list of the cultural institutions participating in the program during the 2015-16 school year is below.
All schools will receive MetroCards for participating students. Student attendance will be monitored in the program and schools must ensure all DOE’s afterschool program guidelines and policies are followed.

El programa de Jueves de Adolescentes, una iniciativa para después de la escuela que permite a los estudiantes de secundaria aprovechar las oportunidades disponibles de aprendizaje en instituciones culturales de toda la ciudad, se ampliará.
Lanzado en el año escolar 2013-4, el programa comenzó con cinco escuelas.
Como fue anunciado el pasado jueves 21 de mayo por la canciller de Escuelas, Carmen Fariña, ahora 30 escuelas participarán en el otoño y hasta 30 escuelas intermedias diferentes participarán en la primavera.
Las escuelas participantes en los cinco condados se asocian con una institución cultural local para ofrecer a los estudiantes experiencias prácticas de aprendizaje. Los directores identifican entre 15 y 20 estudiantes de sus clases de 7° u 8° grado para participar, y los estudiantes seleccionados asisten a sesiones después del horario escolar en su centro asociado cada jueves durante siete semanas. Cada institución cultural tiene un educador que trabaja con la escuela para desarrollar un tema histórico para las sesiones, el cual está alineado con las habilidades que los estudiantes están desarrollando en su trabajo escolar diario.
“Los Jueves de Adolescentes son un gran recordatorio para nuestros estudiantes de secundaria de que sin importar su código postal o antecedentes familiares, los increíbles museos, galerías, salas de conciertos y teatros de nuestra ciudad son espacios que deben aprovechar y de los que pueden beneficiarse”, dijo Fariña. “Las instituciones culturales ofrecen a nuestros estudiantes la oportunidad de enriquecer y profundizar sus experiencias en el aula. Los Jueves de Adolescentes alentarán a los estudiantes y sus familias a visitar estas instituciones y recordarles que el aprendizaje no se limita al salón de clases”.
El anuncio fue hecho durante una visita realizada por los estudiantes de la PS/IS 7, Samuel Stern, del norte de Manhattan, al Museo Metropolitano de Arte.
“He visto cómo los estudiantes se sumergen en las maravillas de los museos, cómo esto enriquece sus experiencias académicas y los ayuda a desarrollar sus habilidades sociales y emocionales”, dijo Sameer Talati, director de la PS/IS 7, Samuel Stern.

El DOE está aceptando solicitudes para el año escolar 2015-2016. Las escuelas interesadas pueden aplicar en línea hasta el 31 de mayo. Las escuelas deben comprometerse a participar durante todo el curso del programa, seleccionando a un grupo consistente de estudiantes y un equipo de docentes colaboradores.
