Councilmember tests positive
Councilmember Ritchie Torres has confirmed that he has tested positive for COVID-19.
His full statement follows:
“Last night, I found out that I had tested positive for COVID-19. Over the weekend, I learned that a senior staff member had tested positive after experiencing symptoms for several days. All members of my staff have quarantined themselves and are now closely monitoring their health for symptoms.
I will be under quarantine in my Bronx apartment for the next few weeks to avoid spreading the virus to others, especially to seniors like my mother who suffers from chronic health conditions. I’ll be working from home and resting as much as possible.
Social distancing, and isolating yourself, especially if you’re experiencing symptoms or have been in contact with someone carrying the virus, may be painful, but it’s absolutely essential. It’s about saving lives and protecting loved ones. We must all take it seriously.”
In response, Speaker Corey Johnson said that a conference call with all Councilmembers was held and that the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) had been alerted and that it would conduct additional cleaning measures at City Hall.
Efforts are also being made to contact individuals who had recently been in physical contact with Torres to alert them as well.
Torres was last present at City Hall on March 10.
The Council’s City Hall and 250 Broadway offices have been closed since Mon., Mar. 16th.
“Everyone at the Council is praying for Ritchie’s speedy recovery,” said Johnson. “He is a great friend and colleague. I know he is anxious to get well and continue serving the people in the Bronx who elected him.”

Estaré en cuarentena en mi departamento del Bronx durante las próximas semanas para evitar contagiar el virus a otras personas, especialmente a adultos mayores -como mi madre- que padecen enfermedades crónicas. Trabajaré desde casa y descansaré tanto como sea posible.
El distanciamiento social y el auto aislamiento, especialmente si experimenta síntomas o ha estado en contacto con alguien portador del virus, puede ser doloroso, pero es absolutamente esencial. Se trata de salvar vidas y proteger a los seres queridos. Todos debemos tomarlo en serio”.
En respuesta, el presidente Corey Johnson dijo que se realizó una conferencia telefónica con todos los miembros del Concejo y que el Departamento de Servicios Administrativos de la ciudad (DCAS, por sus siglas en inglés) fue alertado para llevar a cabo medidas de limpieza adicionales en el Ayuntamiento.
También se están haciendo esfuerzos para contactar a las personas que recientemente estuvieron en contacto físico con Torres para alertarlos.
Torres estuvo presente por última vez en el Ayuntamiento el 10 de marzo.
El Ayuntamiento y las oficinas del No. 250 de Broadway han estado cerradas desde el lunes 16 de marzo.
“Todos en el Concejo están orando por la pronta recuperación de Ritchie”, dijo Johnson. “Es un gran amigo y colega. Sé que está ansioso por recuperarse y continuar sirviendo a las personas en el Bronx que lo eligieron”.
