The 12th Annual Citizenship Now! hotline is open – and it’s taking calls until Fri., May 2nd.
Since 2004, the telephone drives have helped over 123,000 people obtain free assistance and information on immigration issues. The volunteer attorneys and paralegals offer one-on-one consultations to assess participants’ eligibility for legal benefits and assist them in applying when qualified.
“With immigration reform stalled in Congress, the CUNY Citizenship NOW! call-in is of special importance this year,” said Professor Allan Wernick in a statement.
Prof. Wernick has directed CUNY Citizenship Now! since it was founded in 1997 by CUNY Senior Vice Chancellor for University Relations Jay Hershenson and the former Editor-In-Chief of the New York Daily News Daily News.
“Volunteers will provide callers with information on how immigrants can qualify for legal status and U.S. citizenship under existing laws. Immigrants can’t wait for Congress, they need help now.”
“Information is power. Our aim at the Citizenship NOW! call-in is to empower immigrant New Yorkers,” he added.
A total of 400 volunteers are working the lines, under the supervision of Citizenship Now! staff attorneys, the Legal Aid Society, American Immigration Lawyers Association and the Board of Immigration Appeals.
The hotline counts on a number of institutions within the City University of New York (CUNY) system, including the Stella and Charles Guttman Community College, CUNY School of Law, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, as well as the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs and the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO), among others.

La 12a línea directa anual de Citizenship Now! está abierta, y está tomando llamadas hasta el viernes 2 de mayo.
Desde 2004, las campañas telefónicas han ayudado a 123,000 personas a obtener asistencia e información gratuita sobre temas de inmigración. Los abogados voluntarios y asistentes legales ofrecen consultas uno-a-uno para evaluar la elegibilidad de los participantes para los beneficios legales, y los ayudan a aplicar cuando califican.
“Con la reforma migratoria estancada en el Congreso, las llamadas a Citizenship NOW! de CUNY, son de especial importancia este año”, dijo el profesor Allan Wernick en una declaración.

Un total de 400 voluntarios están trabajando en las líneas, bajo la supervisión del equipo de abogados de Citizenship NOW!, la Sociedad de Ayuda Legal, la Asociación Americana de Abogados de Inmigración y la Junta de Apelaciones de Inmigración.
La línea directa cuenta con una serie de instituciones dentro del sistema City University de Nueva York (CUNY), incluyendo al Stella y Charles Guttman Community College, la Escuela de Derecho CUNY, el Colegio de Justicia Criminal John Jay, así como la Oficina de Asuntos Migratorios de la Alcaldía y la Asociación Nacional de Funcionarios latinos Electos y Designados (NALEO por sus siglas en inglés), entre otros.
