Fun – and fuel – in the sun. This summer, more New Yorkers will be able to surf the web and juice up their phones at public parks. NYC Parks has announced an extended deal with AT&T to provide free public Wi-Fi in 21 parks across the five boroughs. The deal also increases the number of free solar mobile charging stations to 34 units at 15 different city parks and beaches. Free Wi-Fi is available to all park-goers, regardless of their wireless carrier. The announcement was made by NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver on May 31 at Joyce Kilmer Park in the Bronx, one of four new parks to receive a solar charging station, which features six charging outlets. “The marriage between green spaces and technology is one that benefits all park users,” said Silver. “We are renewing our contract for AT&T to provide Wi-Fi and charging stations for the next five years.” “This is an added amenity,” Díaz said. “We know how dependent people are on their devices.” Launched in 2011 with AT&T, the Wi-Fi in the Parks initiative was the city’s first free public Wi-Fi program that allowed all smartphone and tablet users to connect. There have been 8.6 million connections since the program started. “We believe now that New Yorkers can work from almost anywhere these days with their devices and they will continue to take more and more advantage of Wi-Fi,” said Shorenstein. “And they can be out with their families all day long and not wonder about where to go to get a little extra juice for their devices,” she added. Solar chargers were first introduced in the city’s parks in 2013 in response to Hurricane Sandy. The charging units will remain in parks into October, said an NYC Parks spokesperson. Diaz credited Shorenstein and AT&T for representing “the new paradigm of what we expect from our corporate neighbors,” yet added that he embraced even more private corporations offering internet services in his borough. “This is a clarion call for other corporations to do the same, for all of us to make sure that, in the Bronx, we have a Wi-Fi bubble,” said Díaz. “In this day and age, when we have so much technology, and so many people are on their phones and tablets, we want them to be able to access that, and not at a cost,” said Rodriguez-Rosa. She noted that many city residents had contacted NYC Parks in recent years, requesting that free Wi-Fi be added in more locations. “They keep on asking us, can our park be in it?” Rodriguez-Rosa said. “We don’t have them in all the parks, but we are definitely expanding them.” “I think it’s a good thing,” Richberg said. “I’m in this park almost every day, and it’ll be great to use the internet, and also know I can plug in my phone.”

Silver was joined by Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz, Jr., AT&T’s New York President Marissa Shorenstein, Bronx Parks Commissioner Iris Rodríguez-Rosa and former Major League Baseball star Lee Mazzilli, who played for the Yankees in 1982, just a few blocks from Joyce Kilmer Park.
Bronx resident Sandy Richberg, who has lived near Joyce Kilmer Park for almost 40 years, said she was glad for the Wi-Fi expansion and the addition of a charging station.
