Samaritan Daytop Village celebrates new wellness center

“This site represents a beacon of hope.”

Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson addressed the group at a ceremony to mark the opening of the Richard Pruss Wellness Center. The integrative health and wellness site located at 510 Courtlandt Avenue is operated by Samaritan Daytop Village.

Programs at the Richard Pruss Wellness Center include treatment and case management for substance use or mental health disorders, services for severe or chronic health conditions, and peer-based recovery services.

Gibson noted that the new center will serve a vulnerable population in the Bronx, which is the epicenter of the city’s opioid crisis.

“These are the New Yorkers that we cannot turn our backs on,” she said. “You are restoring hope for so many clients that feel hopeless.”

The six-story, 84,000-square-foot site officially opened in August 2021 and has been providing services to community members ever since. On July 14 Samaritan Daytop Village held a celebratory ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony, which had been delayed several times due to the pandemic.

“Today we celebrate our past, recognize our present, and look forward to what this center will provide in the future,” said Mitchell Netburn, President and Chief Executive Officer of Samaritan Daytop Village.

The new center will serve as a home base for Samaritan Daytop Village’s centralized admissions team, and will eventually house a primary care medical clinic.

“If someone walks through our doors, they’re assessed for any level of care we have in-house,” explained Alicia McFarlane, Chief Program and Legal Officer of Samaritan Daytop Village. “The treatment we give is person-centered, so not everyone’s treatment plan looks the same.”

The center has served nearly 5,000 clients since opening last August, McFarlane said.

A medical clinic is slated to open on the building’s top floor in fall of 2022. It will be open to the entire community, not just Samaritan’s clients, Netburn said.

Samaritan Daytop Village is one of New York State’s largest health and human services providers. For more than 60 years, the agency has provided services including substance use treatment, mental health and primary health care, specialized programs for military veterans, vocational and employment services, shelter and transitional housing, and services for adolescents, families and seniors.

The new center bears the name of the late Richard Pruss, Samaritan Daytop Village’s first President and Chief Executive Officer who spent 50 years with the nonprofit. He passed away on July 14, 2018.

Pruss’ widow, Kathy Riddle, recalled her late husband’s start with the agency as a volunteer in the early 1970’s.

“At the time, Samaritan couldn’t afford paid staff and they worked out of a rented storefront,” she said. “He quickly became the agency’s leader and CEO and he retired as chairman of the board.”

The dedication ceremony was held four years to the day after Pruss’ death.

“Richard was a true pioneer in the human services field,” Riddle said.

As part of the ceremony, Netburn unveiled a large photograph of Pruss, which will be displayed in the lobby of the new center.

“The Richard Pruss Wellness Center is the physical manifestation of a vision by Richard to not only integrated services but to create a truly integrated center for behavioral health and wellness,” Netburn said. “Today, this is a place where the community can access high-quality services under one roof.”

Visitors toured the new facility, which included recovery activity and training area, a children’s waiting room and a wall gallery of original art pieces by clients.

Samaritan Daytop Village has relocated six of its existing programs — once held at various Bronx locations — to the new building.

McFarlane said the organization’s clients have embraced the ability to receive services at a centralized location.

“They’re absolutely grateful to be able to come into one site. The ease and the availability of accessing these programs immediately is not lost on them,” said McFarlane. “As soon as we have that first encounter, it’s a big help for keeping someone engaged.”

“We have the ability to see clients on day one, and say ‘OK, you qualify and are appropriate for mental health services. But at the same time, let me get you a case manager. Let’s make sure that on Saturday, you have some place to go and get a warm meal and maybe a support group,’” she said.

State Senator Luis Sepúlveda said there have been “positive changes” in the South Bronx because of the nonprofit’s programs.

“The work of Mr. Pruss will impact generations to come in this community,” he said.

Gibson added, “This center is not only going to be transformative for the Bronx, it’s going to stabilize families.”

Samaritan Daytop Village celebra su nuevo centro de bienestar

Como parte de la ceremonia, Netburn develó una gran fotografía de Pruss, que se expondrá en el vestíbulo del nuevo centro.

“El Centro de Bienestar Richard Pruss es la manifestación física de la visión de Richard de no sólo integrar los servicios, sino de crear un centro verdaderamente integrado para la salud conductual y el bienestar”, dijo Netburn. “Hoy, este es un lugar donde la comunidad puede tener acceso a servicios de alta calidad bajo un mismo techo”.

Los visitantes recorrieron las nuevas instalaciones, que incluyen un área de actividades de recuperación y entrenamiento, una sala de espera infantil y una galería de paredes con obras de arte originales de los clientes.

Samaritan Daytop Village ha trasladado al nuevo edificio seis de sus programas existentes, que antes se llevaban a cabo en varios lugares del Bronx.

McFarlane dijo que los clientes de la organización han adoptado la capacidad de recibir servicios en un lugar centralizado.

“Están absolutamente agradecidos de poder acudir a un solo sitio. La facilidad y la disponibilidad de acceder a estos programas de inmediato no se les escapa”, dijo McFarlane. “En cuanto tenemos ese primer encuentro, es una gran ayuda para mantener a alguien comprometido”.

“Tenemos la capacidad de ver a los clientes en el primer día, y decir: ok, usted califica y es apropiado para los servicios de salud mental. Pero al mismo tiempo, permitame conseguirle un gestor de casos. Asegurémonos de que los sábados tenga un lugar al cual ir y conseguir una comida caliente y quizás un grupo de apoyo'”, dijo.

El senador estatal Luis Sepúlveda dijo que se han producido “cambios positivos” en el sur del Bronx gracias a los programas de la organización sin ánimo de lucro.

“El trabajo del Sr. Pruss tendrá un impacto en las generaciones venideras en esta comunidad”, dijo.

Gibson añadió: “Este centro no sólo va a ser transformador para el Bronx, sino que va a estabilizar a las familias”.
