Celebration of the Centennial

Hundreds were in attendance to celebrate the Centennial of the Bronx, as hosted by the Bronx Chamber of Commerce and the Office of the Bronx Borough President, at Marina del Rey this past Wed., Feb. 26th.

Local residents, business owners, community leaders, elected officials and a few celebrities attended the event, which looked to honor both the history of the borough, and to shine a light on its future.

Participating in the festivities were former Bronx Borough Presidents Robert Abrams; Fernando Ferrer; and Adolfo Carrión, Jr., seated alongside gala keynote speaker and current Borough President Rubén Díaz, Jr.

Some of the enterprises recognized included MontefioreMedicalCenter, which also celebrates its centennial this year; the Kingsbridge National Ice Center (KNIC); the Trump Golf Course at FerryPointPark; and Simone Development for the Marriot Hotel, currently being built at the HutchMetroCenter.

Latin music legend José Feliciano and A Bronx Tale screenwriter and actor Chazz Palminteri also attended, as did New York Rangers Hall of Famer and Kingsbridge National Ice Center CEO Mark Messier. He signed a Rangers jersey for the evening’s raffle, with proceeds donated to the CUNY Bronx Scholarship Fund. The CUNY Bronx Scholarship Fund assists students with the greatest financial need in pursuing their studies at BronxCommunity College, HostosCommunity College or LehmanCollege. Since its inception in 2006, the Fund has given scholarships to more than 200 students.
