January is International Creativity Month, and no one knows real ingenuity like moms.

Here are just few ideas to help get your family’s ideas flowing.

Research shows that children whose creativity is sustained and who continue to experience the world in different and innovative ways through the first five or six years of life will be better problem-solvers in the future. Not only that, creative kids also usually go on to lead healthier emotional lives and suffer less from depression.

It’s important to have an innovative approach to parenting, in which you think of new ways to teach and lead your children. Fortunately, parents in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx have abundant resources at their disposal.

Build a Snowman

Start simple! Northern Manhattan and the Bronx are home to some of the city’s best parks, and these are the best destinations to enjoy snow. Building a snowman takes time, dedication and a lot of creativity. Once the snow starts, sit down with your child, sketch out a few snow-people ideas and brainstorm on how to get it done. Let your child create a blueprint for the job and scour around for some props, such as a carrot for the nose, dad’s old hat and maybe even some old shoes. Enlist a few friends or family members. Just make sure you bundle up, pick a good spot and enjoy a nice, hot chocolate afterwards.

Head to the Palace

This month, on Sun., Jan. 12th, the United Palace will be hosting a family event with the most creative and wild characters around—The Muppets! The Palace will be showing the classic The Muppets Take Manhattan as part of its new series “Sunday Movies at the Palace,” which is running once a month through June. Better yet? This event will feature Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, as he will now be part of the Sunday series once a month through June. Miranda will introduce the film with special “Muppet-licious presentation” followed by a raffle.

Teen Poetry

It’s one of the best outlets for that teenage angst that drives most parents batty. This month, Wordat4F – a local group of poets and creative folks – will get together at Word Up on Wed., Jan. 22nd to host an “Open Mic Workshop” for teens. This program will feature talented writers, working and supporting teens wanting to learn and hone their craft. Creatively Online

Our communities boast of some seriously creative folk, all as close as the next message. We have moms like Melissa Juniewicz, who recently launched a website to show several of the projects she makes at home with her kids, including baking, sewing and party planning. She is also a great couponer and shares tips for other parents to follow. You can learn more at lovemomnyc.com. We also have The Green Cat, creator of some of the most whimsical sandwich bags, made from repurposed fabric. Her products can be found on etsy.com/shop/thegreencat.

Whatever your choices in inspiring and sustaining creativity in your children, keep in mind their interests and skill levels. What can challenge and stimulate their imaginations? What does your daughter enjoy doing the most, and are there other young girls her age for whom that is a shared interest? Something as simple as creating a book club for her and her friends in which they gather to discuss their thoughts on the new installment of their favorite fictional series will show support and keep it fun. It might be a healthy cooking activity you and other moms organize on a monthly basis. Or movie nights.

Whatever you decide on, be creative!

Enero es el mes internacional de la creatividad, y nadie conoce el ingenio real como las mamás.

Estos son sólo algunos consejos para ayudar a que las ideas de su familia fluyan.

Las investigaciones muestran que los niños cuya creatividad es alentada, y quienes continúan experimentando el mundo en diferentes e innovadoras formas a través de los primeros cinco o seis años de vida, serán mejores para resolver problemas en el futuro. No sólo eso, los niños creativos también suelen llevar una vida más saludable emocionalmente y sufren menos de depresión.

Es importante contar con un enfoque innovador para la crianza de los hijos, en la que usted piense en nuevas formas de enseñar y guiar a sus hijos. Afortunadamente, los padres en el Norte de Manhattan y el Bronx tienen abundantes recursos a su disposición.

Construir un muñeco de nieve
¡Empiece de forma sencilla! El Norte de Manhattan y el Bronx son el hogar de algunos de los mejores parques de la ciudad, y estos son los mejores destinos para disfrutar de la nieve.

Construir un muñeco de nieve lleva tiempo, dedicación y mucha creatividad. Una vez que la nieve comienza, siéntese con su hijo, bosquejen algunas personas de nieve e intercambien ideas sobre la manera para lograr hacerlas. Deje que su hijo diseñe un plan para el trabajo y busque algunos accesorios, como una zanahoria para la nariz, un viejo sombrero de papá y tal vez incluso unos zapatos viejos. Este mes, el domingo 12 de enero, el United Palace será la sede un evento familiar con los personajes más creativos y salvajes, ¡Los Muppets! El Palacio proyectará el clásico The Muppets Take Manhattan como parte de su nueva serie “Domingos de película en el Palacio”, que se llevará una vez al mes hasta junio. ¿Mejor aún? Este evento contará con el ganador del premio Tony, Lin-Manuel Miranda, ya que ahora será parte de la serie dominical una vez al mes hasta junio. Miranda introducirá la película con una especial “presentación Muppet-licious” seguida de una rifa.

Poesía adolescente
