Via Verde (or “The Green Way”) is a new housing development in the Bronx known for its ambitious goals in promoting a green, healthy lifestyle for its residents, who have access to rooftop gardens, terraces, a gym, and a verdant courtyard in a LEED Gold certified building.
Opened in 2012, the development at 700 Brook Avenue was funded by, among others, the City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), the Borough President’s Office, Councilmember Maria del Carmen Arroyo’s Office, and JPMorgan Chase, who provided loans for the construction.
Via Verde’s newest feature will be an expansion of its healthful goals: the Montefiore Medical Group has opened a comprehensive family practice at Via Verde in a 5,000 square–foot space that is projected to serve 6,000 patients and 15,000 visits from Via Verde and the surrounding community.
It is Montefiore’s first new primary care site in a decade.
This past Tues., Feb. 26th, elected officials, Montefiore representatives, and community leaders and residents gathered for the ribbon-cutting of the new health center.
“We’re a comprehensive, innovative delivery system,” said Dr. Stephen Safyer, the President and CEO of Montefiore.
As described by those present, delivering medical and health services to residents in a manner that eliminates travel times and geographic distances broadens access to quality care.
Dr. Jonathan Swartz is the Regional Medical Director of the Montefiore Medical Group.
“We can offer accessible high quality primary health care right in the neighborhood and also give residents easy access to world class sub-specialty care at Montefiore when the need arises,” he noted.
Among the services offered will be multilingual staff and physicians, same-day appointments, health screenings, regular check-ups and wellness programs and quick lab test results.
The delivery of on-the-ground services is one way also to address the health crisis in the Bronx, which is the city’s unhealthiest borough.
Dr. Jane Bedell, Assistant Commissioner of the Department of Health, views the clinic’s opening as an opportunity to engage residents directly.
As naturally befits a health commissioner, Dr. Bedell, a Bronx resident, rides her bike everywhere she goes, including to Tuesday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Dr. Bedell sees much of the city as a cyclist, and knew Via Verde when it was just another cement block in the South Bronx.
“I’ve been watching this go up for a long time,” she said.
While the center will be a welcome addition to the neighborhood, Dr. Safyer added a touch of humor to his remarks in noting that he did not necessarily want to see too many people there.
“Your mission is to keep people outta here,” he joked to Dr. Bedell.
Hester Norbert, Melissa Rivera, and Luisa Lambert, all patient service representatives at the new family practice, will enjoy five minute walks to work from their homes in the surrounding area.
They were excited about their micro-commute, as well as the possibility of taking walks on the terraces and the rooftop garden.
The three employees report that the new practice has sparked curiosity and anticipation among local residents.
“They’re knocking on the door—they want to know when it opens,” said Lambert.
Jacqueline Richardson, administrator of the site, said that the family practice is ready to take them on.
“The building is geared toward that. It does work hand in hand,” she said of the development’s unique layout and features.
Dr. Swartz expects to see a lot of patients who are battling obesity, asthma and diabetes, and is hopeful that the development’s additional amenities will encourage healthy living.
“There’s a major focus on behavioral changes at [Via Verde],” he said, noting that the terraces and access to the gym offered opportunities for more physical activity among residents.
And even creating new occasions for enjoying fresh produce for local residents is part of the plan.
As Dr. Safyer noted, there will be apples and vegetables coming from the community garden: “The plan will be to connect produce with patients.”
On Tuesday, a few present imagined even more.
Richardson smiled as she said: “It would be nice to have a farmer’s market upstairs.”

Vía Verde es un nuevo desarrollo de vivienda en el Bronx conocido por sus ambiciosas metas de promover un estilo de vida ambiental y saludable a sus residentes, quienes tienen acceso a jardines en la azotea, terrazas, un gimnasio y un patio en un edificio certificado por LEED Gold.
Abierto en el 2012, el desarrollo en el 700 de la Avenida Brook fue subvencionado por, entre otros, el Departamento de Preservación y Desarrollo de Vivienda de la ciudad (HPD, por sus siglas en inglés), la oficina del Presidente del condado, la oficina de la Concejal María del Carmen Arroyo y JPMorgan Chase, quien proveyó préstamos para la construcción.
Una de las caracterizas más recientes de Vía Verde será una expansión de sus metas saludables: el Grupo Médico Montefiore abrirá una práctica familiar en Vía Verde en un espacio de 5,000 pies cuadrados que se proyecta servirá a 6,000 pacientes y 15,000 visitas de Vía Verde y las comunidades que la rodean.
Es el primer local para cuidado primario de Montefiore en una década.
Este pasado martes, 26 de febrero, oficiales electos, representantes de Montefiore, líderes comunales y residentes se reunieron para el corte de cinta del nuevo centro de salud.
“Somos un sistema de servicios comprensivo, innovador”, dijo el Dr. Stephen Safyer, presidente y CEO de Montefiore.
Según fue descrito por los presentes, proveer servicios médicos y de salud a residentes en una manera que elimina el tiempo de viaje y distancias geográficas amplían el acceso a un cuidado de calidad.
Entre los que proveerán servicios habrán empleados bilingües y doctores. También habrán citas el mismo día, exámenes de salud, chequeos regulares y programas de bienestar y rápidos resultados de exámenes de laboratorio.
El proveer servicios en el vecindario también es una manera de hacer frente a la crisis de salud en el Bronx, el cual es el condado menos saludable de la ciudad.
La Dra. Jane Bedell, Asistente Comisionada del Departamento de Salud, ve la apertura de la clínica como una oportunidad para involucrar directamente a los residentes.
Naturalmente, como corresponde a una comisionada de salud, la Dra. Bedell, residente del Bronx, corre su bicicleta a donde quiera que va, incluyendo a la ceremonia de recorte de cinta el martes.
Aunque el centro será una bienvenida adición al vecindario, el Dr. Safyer añadió un toque de humor a sus declaraciones señalando que no necesariamente deseaba ver muchas personas ahí.
“Tu misión es mantener la gente aquí”, bromeo la Dra. Bedell.
Como ciclista, la Dra. Bedell ve mucho de la ciudad y conocía Vía Verde cuando era solo otro bloque de cemento en el Sur del Bronx.
“He estado viendo la construcción por mucho tiempo”, dijo ella.
Hester Norbert, Melissa Rivera y Luisa Lambert, todos representantes de servicios a pacientes en la nueva práctica familiar, disfrutaran de cinco minutos de caminata para trabajar desde sus casas en el área adyacente.
Estaban emocionados con su pequeño viaje, como también la posibilidad de caminatas en las terrazas y en el jardín de la azotea.
Los tres empleados informan que la nueva práctica ha despertado curiosidad y expectativa entre los residentes locales.
“Están tocando la puerta — quieren saber cuando abrimos,” informó Lambert.
Jacqueline Richardson, la administradora del sitio, dijo que la práctica familiar está lista para recibirlos.
“El edificio está orientado hacia eso. Realmente funciona,” dijo ella del diseño único y características del desarrollo.
El Dr. Jonathan Swartz, quien es el director médico del lugar, espera ver muchos pacientes batallando contra la obesidad, el asma y la diabetes, y se espera que las amenidades adicionales del desarrollo animen a una vida saludable.
“Hay un gran enfoque en cambios de comportamiento en Vía Verde”, dijo el, señalando que las terrazas y el acceso al gimnasio ofrecen oportunidades de más actividad física entre los residentes.
E incluso crear nuevas ocasiones para disfrutar productos frescos para los residentes locales es parte del plan.
Habrá manzanas y vegetales procedentes del jardín comunal: “El plan será conectar el producto con los pacientes”.
El martes, algunos presentes hasta se imaginaron más.
Richardson sonrió mientras decía: “Sería bueno tener una plaza de mercado arriba”.
