Parents attending City University of New York (CUNY) colleges will now have added help taking care of their children, thanks to the City Council.

On August 27, Council Speaker Corey Johnson and Higher Education Committee Chair Inez Barron announced a $600,000 investment for the CUNY Childcare Initiative, which was created to support student-parents at CUNY colleges throughout the five boroughs.

The funding will help childcare centers at 18 CUNY colleges provide childcare services and programming for infants and toddlers, as well as academic tutoring.

The centers will feature extended hours and weekend programs and are expected to serve over 1,500 children whose parents are CUNY students.

“Being a parent is the hardest job in the world, but we know being a college student is pretty tough as well. Needless to say, juggling both can feel impossible, which is why the Council created this initiative for parents,” said Johnson.

“We know you need help, and we are here to help. Parents can focus on their studies knowing that their child is being cared for in a safe environment that promotes learning for the next generation of CUNY students.”

The 18 colleges include five community colleges, two honors and professional schools and 11 senior colleges.

Designed to help support student-parents’ retention and graduation, the CUNY Childcare Initiative was created during the Fiscal Year 2019 budget process by Speaker Johnson and the Council’s finance leadership team in recognition of the importance of supporting parents of all ages who wish to further their education.

“Our CUNY students are under a lot of stress because they have to cover tuition, textbooks, rent, food, childcare and other basic necessities,” said Barron. “Supporting our CUNY student-parents by covering childcare helps alleviate this burden and allows them to focus more on their academic studies. As a proud graduate of Hunter College, I know the importance of receiving and achieving a degree. Anytime the city allocates funds to support CUNY students, [it] is an acknowledgment that we value them and want to ensure their success.”

“This support by the New York City Council to fund the CUNY Childcare Initiative will help student-parents throughout the university fulfill their dream of earning a degree,” said CUNY Interim Chancellor Vita C. Rabinowitz.

“Many of our students have to balance their studies with work as well as family obligations. The CUNY Childcare Initiative helps them achieve this goal by providing the peace of mind that comes from knowing their children are being cared for in a safe and nurturing environment. As the members of the City Council well know, the benefits of investing in CUNY are reaped throughout the city and state.”

Los padres que asisten a las facultades de la City University de Nueva York (CUNY) ahora tendrán ayuda adicional para cuidar a sus hijos, gracias al Concejo Municipal.

El 27 de agosto, el presidente del Concejo -Corey Johnson- y la presidenta del Comité de Educación Superior -Inez Barron- anunciaron una inversión de $600,000 dólares para la Iniciativa de Cuidado Infantil de CUNY, que fue creada para apoyar a los estudiantes de las facultades de CUNY en los cinco condados.

La financiación ayudará a los centros de cuidado infantil de 18 facultades de CUNY a proporcionar servicios de cuidado infantil y programación para bebés y niños pequeños, así como tutorías académicas.

El programa contará con horas extendidas y programas de fin de semana, y se espera que sirva a más de 1,500 niños cuyos padres son estudiantes de CUNY.

“Ser padre es el trabajo más difícil del mundo, pero sabemos que ser un estudiante universitario también es bastante difícil. Huelga decir que hacer malabares con ambos puede parecer imposible, razón por la cual el Concejo creó esta iniciativa para los padres”, dijo Johnson. “Sabemos que necesitan ayuda y estamos aquí para ayudarles.
