Scratch the yellow submarine; it was time to roll out the blue school bus. More than 500 students at PS 25 in the South Bronx recently found some instant karma, as the school received a visit from the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus. Launched 19 years ago, the bus is a state-of-the-art mobile audio and video recording facility that allows students of all ages to create their own original music and video projects. The bus is traveling to schools around New York City throughout October as part of its “Come Together NYC” initiative, and in honor of Lennon’s birthday on October 9. On Fri., Sept. 30, students at PS 25 received tours of the bus and had the chance to jam on keyboards and drums or sing into a microphone. “We try to give kids as much hands-on experience as possible,” remarked Brian Rothschild, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus. Rothschild noted that many public schools around the country are cutting music programs, making it harder for children to engage with creating music. “Sadly, many schools don’t have any kind of music education, and the Lennon Bus introduces kids to that,” he stated. “For a lot of kids, they’ve never drummed, they’ve never touched a keyboard, they’ve never heard themselves on a microphone, and these are their first experiences with that,” he said. In partnership with Apple and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus donated $1,000 to fund music programs at PS 25, a bilingual K through 5 school on East 149th Street. Rothschild said the Lennon Bus and Apple also donated a collection of musical instruments for the school to keep, while Apple donated over 500 iPads to boost technology in the PS 25 classrooms. The school’s principal, Carmen Toledo-Guerrero, said the school has been able to implement more music into the curriculum after receiving the grant. “It’s an amazing experience,” she said. “We got the rollout going in late September, and in just a week, it was incredible to see the learning that’s going on in the classroom, and the impact that it’s having on our children and staff.” Toledo-Guerrero said the school will use part of the $1,000 donation to purchase guitars for student use. The Lennon Bus travels across the United States and Canada year-round, providing free tours and workshops at schools, festivals and other events. A crew of three producer/engineers live on board the bus for months at a time. “We’ve been to San Jose, Austin, Miami, New York, and lots of other cities this year,” said Luke Huisman, one of the bus’s live-in producers. “The most rewarding part is seeing a group of kids come together and create something that comes from the heart.” For several days prior to the bus’s arrival, PS 25 students worked with Lennon bus staff on a music curriculum. Rothschild said he found it rewarding to see the reaction of students when they participate in the activities. “Obviously, having John Lennon’s name on it is the extra special sauce that makes people get excited,” remarked Rothschild of the former Beatle. “There are so many positive feelings that people have for John Lennon and Yoko Ono, not just as artists but as peace activists.” As part of the Lennon Bus curriculum, PS 25 students explored the idea of peace and discussed what it means to them. The children also gathered in the school yard to create a giant peace sign. Students said they considered it a treat to explore the bus and experiment with the instruments. “The bus was cool,” said Michael, a third grader. “I like the instruments. I like to play drums, because I enjoy the beat.” “I think it was really interesting,” added fourth grader Matthew. “I got to see how they made music and create videos.” Teacher Mike Carlton, who instructs a group of PS 25 fourth graders with autism, said his class was using the iPads to learn about various songs. “We broke down the songs, to learn more about melodies and lyrics,” he said. “When it comes to kids with autism, the music really helps engage them with vocabulary and numbers as well.” “Music definitely helps kids in other academic areas as well,” added Toledo-Guerrero. “It’s taking some of the traditional learning such as letters and sounds and connected it to a different world.” The principal said that technology is now an inseparable part of classroom learning. “It’s important to have an understanding of music and technology in everyday learning,” said Toledo-Guerrero. “We’re creating the digital citizens of the future.” For more information, please visit www.lennonbus.org.
