This week marks the 46th annual celebration of Bronx Week, with a host of events celebrating the “Boogie Down” borough. On May 8, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. was joined by hundreds of attendees for the official kickoff of Bronx Week 2017 at the Bronx County Building’s Veterans’ Memorial Hall. During the celebration, Diaz announced that Latin music star Prince Royce, hip hop DJ Funkmaster Flex, actress Selenis Leyva and medical entrepreneuer Dr. Manny Villafaña would be honored as the newest members of the Bronx Walk of Fame, which is celebrating its 20th year. “Bronx Week is a celebration of everything that makes our borough such an amazing place, and nothing is more important to that celebration than the people who are proud to call the Bronx their home,” said Diaz. “Every year, we are proud to welcome back the sons and daughters of the Bronx to celebrate their accomplishments and induct them to the Bronx Walk of Fame.” The Walk of Fame induction ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 21 at 11 a.m. on the steps of the Bronx County Building. “This is the time of year when the entire borough comes together to exhibit pride and show the rest of the world what a great place The Bronx truly is. We give our honorees a big hometown welcome as we celebrate their accomplishments, says Olga Luz Tirado, executive director of The Bronx Tourism Council. The kickoff event also as the official unveiling of the newly restored historic murals depicting key moments in Bronx history that hang on the wall of Veterans’ Memorial Hall. “These murals depict important events in the history of the Bronx, and they’ve never looked better than they do today,” said Borough President Diaz. “I am especially grateful to the Department of Citywide Administrative Services for their wonderful work they did to make these repairs.” The first full day of Bronx Week event is Thursday, May 11 and includes the annual Labor Breakfast, the Centenarian Celebration, honoring Bronxites that have lived 100 or more years, and a tribute to Bronx Community Board members. Esta semana se festeja la 46ª celebración anual de la Semana del Bronx, con una serie de eventos que celebran el barrio “Boogie Down”. El 8 de mayo, el presidente del condado de Bronx, Rubén Díaz Jr., estuvo acompañado por cientos de asistentes para el lanzamiento oficial de la Semana del Bronx 2017 en el Memorial Hall de los Veteranos del Edificio del Condado del Bronx. Durante la celebración, Díaz anunció que la estrella de la música latina Prince Royce, el DJ de hip hop Funkmaster Flex, la actriz Selenis Leyva y el empresario en medicina Manny Villafaña serían homenajeados como los más recientes miembros del Paseo de la Fama del Bronx. “La Semana del Bronx es una celebración de todo lo que hace que nuestro barrio sea un lugar increíble, y nada es más importante para esa celebración que las personas que están orgullosas de llamar al Bronx su hogar”, dijo Díaz. “Cada año, estamos orgullosos de dar la bienvenida a los hijos e hijas del Bronx para celebrar sus logros e inducirlos al Paseo de la Fama del Bronx”. El primer día completo del evento de la Semana del Bronx es el jueves 11 de mayo e incluye el Desayuno Anual de Trabajadores, la Celebración del Centenario, el homenaje a los oriundos del Bronx que han vivido 100 años o más y un homenaje a los miembros de la Junta Comunitaria del Bronx.
