Kicking off borough-wide pridefest

“Is the Bronx in the house?”
The question was put to the scores in attendance at the Gun Hill Brewery on Laconia Avenue, who promptly cheered in response.
The question was asked by Bronx Borough President Rubén Diaz Jr. this past Mon., May 5th.
All were gathered for the official launch to Bronx Week 2014, an annual event with a special significance this year as the borough also celebrates its centennial.
The celebration includes opportunities to explore the county’s history, people culture, art and culinary offerings. Held from May 8 to May 18, Bronx Week offers three extra days beyond the traditional seven with which to soak up the wonders of the borough.
Bronx Week is sponsored by the The Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation (BOEDC), the Bronx Tourism Council, the Office of the Borough President, Montefiore Medical Center, HealthFirst, the City University of New York (CUNY), among others.
Among the highly anticipated events are the annual Centenarian Celebration; the Bronx Bankers’ Breakfast; The Bronx Food and Farm Trolley Tour; the Bronx Ball; and the Bronx Week Parade. There is also a host of educational activities, including a Wave Hill History Walk and an Old Yankee Stadium Walking Tour.
The kickoff was attended by Deputy Borough President Aurelia Greene; BOEDC President Marlene Cintrón; Councilmember Andy King; and other well-known Bronxites, including culinary television personality Baron Ambrosia, actor David Zayas and Grammy Award-winning musical artist and producer Kasseem Dean, better known as Swizz Beatz, and husband to Alicia Keys.
Dean and Zayas are both inductees to the Bronx Walk of Fame on 161st Street and the Grand Concourse. Fellow honorees include Rachel Ticotin, an actress who has appeared in Fort Apache, Total Recall, Con Air, the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and Law and Order: Los Angeles; Willie Colón, a defensive guard for the New York Jets; and Priscilla López, a theater actress who has appeared in In the Heights, A Chorus Line, A Day in Hollywood/A Night in Ukraine, and Anna in the Tropics.
On Monday, Dean shared some memories of growing up in the borough.
At age 16, he worked as a barber at nearby Boston Road; business was lucrative as he also sold mix tapes to his clients.
“The Bronx is the beginning flagship for music, creativity, geniuses, great people,” he enthused. “The Bronx should have empires.”
Dean revealed that he would soon be attending business school at Harvard University, but the spirit of his hometown would not be far.
“I take the Bronx with me wherever I go,” he said.
Zayas, an actor who has appeared in Dexter, NYPD Blue, and New York Undercover, among other productions, continues to live in the Bronx. He said he learned some of his most important values in his hometown.
“The Bronx is a place I learned the nucleus of family, the nucleus of pride,” he said.
Zayas vowed he would try to make it to as many Bronx Week activities as possible.
“This borough is so rich in detail,” he said. “There’s so much that I don’t know about that I want to learn about. There’s so much culturally, so much historically.”
“It’s the best place in the world,” he said.
“The Bronx is a hub for culture, a hub for creativity,” he added. “Anywhere you go in the world, you mention the Bronx and people know what you’re talking about immediately. It represents the real New York.”

Dwight Freckleton, an MRI technician, is a local Williamsbridge resident who stopped by to see the Bronx Week kickoff.
“I think it’s great that we’re shedding an uplifting and positive light to the borough we’re from,” he said as he cradled a dark stout brewed at Gun Hill.
Kieran Farrell, a co-owner of the Brewery, said though he doubted he would get enough time away from the brewery to make it to any of the Bronx Week events, he was proud to participate in Bronx Week.
“My parents both met here after they emigrated from Ireland,” he explained.
He wanted his brewery to be conceived in the same place he had been born and raised.
“The Bronx is where we planned this all along.”

“¿Está el Bronx en casa?”
La pregunta fue hecha frente a esos reunidos en la fábrica de cerveza Gun Hill de la avenida Laconia, quienes aplaudieron con prontitud al responder.
Era el presidente del condado del Bronx Rubén Díaz Jr. quien preguntaba el pasado lunes 5 de mayo.
Todos se reunieron para el lanzamiento oficial de la Semana del Bronx 2014, un evento anual con un significado especial este año ya que el condado también celebra su centenario.
La celebración incluye la oportunidad de explorar la historia del condado, la cultura de la gente, el arte y sus ofrendas culinarias. Bronx Week, o la semana del Bronx, que se celebra del 8 al 18 de mayo, ofrece tres días extra, más allá de los tradicionales siete, con los cuales disfrutar de las maravillas del condado.
La semana del Bronx es patrocinada por la Corporación de Desarrollo Económico General del Bronx (BOEDC por sus siglas en inglés), el Consejo de Turismo del Bronx, la Oficina del Presidente del Condado, el Centro Médico Montefiore, HealthFirst, la City University de Nueva York (CUNY), entre otros.
Entre los eventos más esperados están la celebración centenaria anual; el desayuno de los banqueros del Bronx; el recorrido de tranvía de alimentos y granja del Bronx; el baile del Bronx y el desfile de la semana Bronx. También hay una serie de actividades educativas, incluyendo una caminata histórica de Wave Hill y un recorrido caminando del viejo estadio Yankee.

El lunes, Dean compartió algunos recuerdos de haber crecido en el condado.

“Este condado es tan rico en detalles”, dijo. “Hay tantas cosas de las que no sé nada, y de eso quiero aprender. Hay tanto cultural e históricamente”.
“Es el mejor lugar del mundo”, dijo.
“El Bronx es un centro de cultura, un centro para la creatividad”, agregó. “Donde quiera que vaya en el mundo, mencionas el Bronx y la gente sabe de lo que estás hablando de inmediato. Representa a la verdadera Nueva York”.
Dwight Freckleton, un técnico MRI, es residente local de Williamsbridge, y se detuvo a ver la inauguración de la semana del Bronx.
“Creo que es genial que estemos derramando una luz inspiradora y positiva sobre nuestro condado”, dijo, mientras sostenía una cerveza negra oscura fabricada en Gun Hill.
Kieran Farrell, co-propietario de la cervecería, dijo que aunque dudaba que tuviera suficiente tiempo fuera de la fábrica de cerveza para llegar a cualquier evento, estaba orgulloso de participar en la semana del Bronx.
“Mis padres se conocieron aquí después de emigrar de Irlanda”, explicó.
Quería que su fábrica de cerveza fuera concebida en el mismo lugar en el que nació y creció.
“El Bronx fue donde planeamos todo”.
