Hostos Review celebrates Latin Literature
Several distinguished authors will “cross borders” as part of a multimedia event on April 26, at 5 p.m., at Pregones Theatre in the South Bronx to talk about their contributions to the Hostos Review/ Revista Hostosiana) (Issue No. 11): Stirred Ground: Non-fiction Writing by Contemporary Latina and Latin American Women Authors, edited by Hostos humanities professor, Inmaculada Lara-Bonilla.
As well as serving as a gathering for several women authors of the Americas, this event will serve to pay tribute to two distinguished writers of non-fiction through the publication of previously unpublished texts: “I Also Remember,” by the Mexican narrator, Margo Glantz, and “Unfinished Notes on A Writing Process,” written by the late Chicana thinker, poet, and non-fiction author, Gloria E. Anzaldúa, whose work was bestowed to the Hostos Review by the Gloria E. Anzaldúa Trust.
Other featured authors include Norma Elia Cantú, Rose Mary Salum, Ruth Behar, Aurora Levins Morales, Nancy Mercado, Mayra Santos-Febres, Jacqueline Herranz-Brooks, Giovanna Rivero, Dinapiera Di Donato, and Gisela Heffes.

Guest editor and author, Inmaculada Lara-Bonilla, will lead the dialogue.
Published by the Latin American Writers Institute (LAWI) of Eugenio María de Hostos Community College (CUNY), the authors who contributed texts to Hostos Review/Revista Hostosiana No. 11 will read and discuss their work both in person and via teleconference on the Pregones Theatre stage, connecting from Puerto Rico, London, California, Michigan, and Florida. Three of the New York City-based authors will participate in the celebration in person.
This free event will also include a Q&A and a book signing.
The Latin American Writers Institute (LAWI) was founded by the Peruvian writer and Professor Isaac Goldemberg at The City College of New York in 1987. Housed at Hostos Community College since 1992, LAWI is an organization devoted to promoting Latin American and Latino literature in the United States. LAWI presents the work of Latino writers to different audiences, by publishing books under its imprint The Latino Press; by editing two bilingual journals, Brújula/Compass and Hostos Review/Revista Hostosiana; by sponsoring readings and conferences; by offering writing workshops; by sponsoring the Latino Literature Prize in Poetry and Fiction, and by organizing the “LibroFest Latino BookFest”. LAWI also functions as a clearing house on Latino and Latin American literature. Its services are available to professors, journalists, reviewers, translators, editors, and publishers who are interested in writers for readings, conferences, and workshops and who might need skilled Latino writers for editing, teaching, translation, and writing projects.
Sponsored by the Office of Academic Affairs of Hostos Community College and directed by Goldemberg, The Hostos Review/Revista Hostosiana aims to build bridges between intellectuals and Latin American artists residing in the United States and those living in Latin America, Spain and elsewhere.
“For decades, the multicultural vision of these authors has questioned the ways in which we read not only literature, but also what we consider ‘reality.’ Through the regeneration of memoir, chronicle, autobiography, and other referential genres, they ask us to rethink, what reality is when everything changes, is doubled, or returns to the past. Halfway into this new decade, the time is ripe to observe growth of this writing,” said Lara-Bonilla.

Varias autoras distinguidas “cruzarán fronteras” como parte de un evento multimedia el 26 de abril, a las 5 p.m., en el Teatro Pregones en el sur del Bronx, para hablar de sus contribuciones a la Hostos Review/Revista Hostosiana) (Volumen No. 11): Stirred Ground: Non-fiction Writing by Contemporary Latina and Latin American Women Authors, editada por Inmaculada Lara-Bonilla, profesora de Humanidades de Hostos.
Además de servir como una reunión para varias autoras de América, este evento rendirá homenaje a dos ilustres escritoras de no ficción a través de la publicación de textos inéditos: “I Also Remember”, de la narradora mexicana Margo Glantz, y “Unfinished Notes on A Writing Process”, escrito por la fallecida pensadora, poeta y autora chicana de no ficción Gloria E. Anzaldúa, cuyo trabajo fue concedido a Hostos Review por el Fideicomiso Gloria Anzaldúa.

Publicadas por el Instituto de Escritores de América Latina (LAWI por sus siglas en inglés) de Eugenio María de Hostos Community College (CUNY), las autoras que contribuyeron con textos para el volumen 11 de Hostos Review/Revista Hostosiana leerán y discutirán su obra en persona y vía teleconferencia en el escenario del teatro Pregones, conectándose desde Puerto Rico, Londres, California, Michigan y Florida. Tres de las autoras que viven en Nueva York participarán de la celebración en persona.
Este evento gratuito incluirá también una sesión de preguntas y respuestas y una firma de libros.
El Instituto de Escritores de América Latina (LAWI) fue fundado por el escritor y profesor peruano Isaac Goldemberg en el City College de Nueva York en el año 1987. Ubicado en el Hostos Community College desde 1992, LAWI es una organización dedicada a promover la literatura latina y latinoamericana en Estados Unidos. LAWI presenta la obra de los escritores latinos a diferentes públicos, publicando libros bajo su sello The Latino Press; editando dos publicaciones bilingües: Brújula/Compass y Hostos Review/Revista Hostosiana; organizando conferencias y lecturas, ofreciendo talleres de escritura, organizando el premio de Literatura Latina en poesía y ficción, así como el “LibroFest Latino BookFest”. LAWI también funciona como un centro de intercambio sobre literatura latina y latinoamericana. Sus servicios están a disposición de profesores, periodistas, críticos, traductores y editores que estén interesados en escritores para lecturas, conferencias y talleres y que podría necesitar escritores latinos calificados para proyectos de edición, enseñanza, traducción y escritura.
Patrocinada por la oficina de Asuntos Académicos de Hostos Community College y dirigida por Goldemberg, The Hostos Review/Revista Hostosiana tiene como objetivo construir puentes entre los intelectuales, los artistas latinoamericanos residentes en los Estados Unidos y los que viven en América Latina, España y otros países.
“Durante décadas, la visión multicultural de estas autoras ha cuestionado la forma en que leemos no sólo la literatura, sino también lo que consideramos “realidad”. A través de la regeneración de las memorias, la crónica, la autobiografía y otros géneros referenciales, nos piden que repensemos lo que la realidad es cuando todo cambia, se duplica, o vuelve al pasado. A mitad de camino en esta nueva década ha llegado el momento de observar el crecimiento de esta escritura”, dijo Lara Bonilla.
