A record 7,000 bike riders from across the city participated in the 22nd Annual Tour de Bronx, held on Sun., Oct. 23. Advertised as the “largest free cycling event” in New York State, the event was first held in 1994. “This is one of my favorite events of the year,” said Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr. “[It] not only emphasizes maintaining a healthy lifestyle, helping improve the overall health of our borough, but also [highlights] our borough’s historical sites, beautiful waterfronts and vibrant neighborhoods, showcasing the best that we have to offer to both our residents and visitors from around the world.” Sponsors included the Montefiore Health System, Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center and St. Barnabas Health System. Additional support was provided by The Bronx Tourism Council, The Coca-Cola Company, Domino’s Pizza, Lehman College, and Fordham University. Riders choose between the 25-mile course which goes through Mott Haven along the East River to Pelham Bay Park or the 40-mile course that takes bikers through Riverdale and Woodlawn on the west side of the borough onto City Island on the east side. Nearing the end of his 40-mile ride, Fred Thomas of Kingsbridge stopped to catch his breath and wait for friends at West Gun Hill Road, where hundreds of riders were seen taking a turn into Van Cortlandt Park. “I live in this area,” he said. “And I ride the trails here and I really enjoy it.” The Tour ended at the New York Botanical Garden, where bikers enjoyed live musical performances and plenty of free pizza. “It’s exciting to see so many avid cyclists coming from all over,” said Olga Luz Tirado, Executive Director of the Bronx Tourism Council. “It’s inspiring.”

Anunciado como el “más grande evento gratuito de ciclismo” en el estado de Nueva York, el evento se llevó a cabo por primera vez en 1994.
